Another week gone by; marred at the start by Clypse and the Cool Kids cancelling their show (and having GvB whine about not being informed as to why), but still some good stuff coming up. Hit the jump to find out what's up with what for the weekend in and around Dallas, TX. Thursday, August 13 Judas Priest and Whitesnake | Nokia Theater Corey Smith | House of Blues The Backsliders | Boiler Room (Denton) Friday, August 14 [...]
Last week, Dan Gibson mused aloud about the success of one Corey Smith , whose $4.2 million annual income rated a bragging post from Hypebot . Who was this guy? How did he make so much money? Could he maybe give a little bit to us? Well, the answers have been flowing in! First, our own Lucas Jensen chimed in with some notes on Smith, the man: "He regularly sells out venues here in the South that big indie bands can't sell out...and his music is the absolute pits. It's the musical equivalent of an Ovation guitar. It's [...]
Let's just see if I'm understanding Hypebot guest poster and "Floor 64 CEO" Mike Mesniak correctly: Corey Smith , thanks to a total of 95 recorded radio spins this year, giving away much of his music for free, and touring venues like the Cat's Crade in North Carolina while selling most of the tickets for $5 is making $4.2 million a year from the music biz, and not, say, selling weapons to Saudi Arabia? I understand that blogs don't generally have fact-checking departments, but something seems a little fishy in the math there. [ Hypebot ]
Yesterday's post got me thinking. Everybody has friends that, for whatever reason, make you laugh just a little bit more than anyone else. For me, it's because things this friend constantly says don't make any sense, and yesterday's quote came straight from his mouth. Here's a few recent tidbits, as well as the stories that left me laughing so hard I'm pretty sure I was crying. FYI 1: It's 11 P.M. and we've just left a bar, and we're walking down the sidewalk. We see a guy walking towards us with a cane in his [...]
Locust Walk was interesting today. Besides the usual shameless advertising for on-campus events, students were promoting some important social causes. On the right, a group of students barked that I should support Alzheimer's research. On the left, a girl forced me to take a breast cancer flyer. Yellow balloons swayed in the wind, signifying the start of Islam awareness week. Above me, a banner screamed that we were in the midst of Terrorism awareness week as well. In most cases Locust Walk is the perfect venue for the ideas expressed there. I [...]
Well, that was probably the last one. An out-of-town weekend that squeezed every ounce of fun remaining in the semester before making our final descent into Finalsburg. A jaunt into the more "country" side of Kentucky reminded me of the various insults a Kentuckian recieves when venturing to more urban places; yes, I do wear shoes and no, a horse isn't my main source of transportation. But the pick-up truck heavy and dirt road decorated environment where this bash took place was a fun change of scenery. The music played was tolerable and after extensive listening [...]

Corey Smith: The $4.2 Million Man Explained [The New Model]

Free music can make money
There's a great Hypebot post on Corey Smith, a musician who has apparently made millions because - not despite - giving stuff away and charging low prices for gigs: First, even though the music is available for free, plenty of people still buy his music on iTunes. However, as an experiment, they took down the free tracks from Corey's website for a period of time last summer... and sales on iTunes went down. Once again, this proves how ridiculous the claim is that free songs somehow cannibalize sales. But, still, the real money maker [...]
