Around these offices there isn't a more eagerly anticipated 2012 album than the new one from Cory Chisel & The Wandering Sons. The Appleton, WI songwriter's 2009 album Death Won't Send A Letter we touted as "perhaps the finest album by a newcomer this year...music that touches the soul and raises a few hairs on the back of the neck at the same time." Chisel has said a new album has was completed last fall -- and we know that he's already booked a performance on Letterman for June 4. [...]

The first installment of SoundTown Music Festival in Somerset, WI, had a lot riding on the shoulders of 2,500 attendees. The new management of the former Float-Rite Park Amphitheater tried to revamp the arena's image after years of Ozzfest-induced damage to the grounds and its reputation in the town of Somerset. And what better way to do it than to bring in beloved local bands with a Flaming Lips cherry on top? Granted, it's not quite the same when a 40,000-person amphitheater is about five percent full, but who notices when you're in the front row reaching for [...]

DANGER MOUSE & DANIELE LUPPI(Indie Rock)When doesn't Danger Mouse turn his projects into gold. Seriously, producing music for such artists including Gorillaz, The Black Keys and Broken Bells, does it get much better? Due to time constraints I'm going to end the list there. This time he has collaborated with Daniele Luppi on a project called Rome which is set to be released on the 16th of May.

Click here to view the embedded video. A few months back I went to the annual John Lennon memorial held at First Ave in Minneapolis. It was a good night despite the shit acoustics of First Ave's main room, but one thing I forgot to do was pick up their album, the Minnesota Beatle Project: Vol. 2 . Well, I've been a complete airhead since until I saw the official video of Cory Chisel's cover of "Fixing A Hole". Cory Chisel and The Wandering Sons have covered this classic [...]

Cory Chisel 's major label debut album Death Won't Send A Letter was an '09 Top 5 favorite here at DC, one that we described as "perhaps the finest album by a newcomer this year...music that touches the soul and raises a few hairs on the back of the neck at the same time." Chisel and his band The Wandering Sons played the Newport Folk Festival this past summer ( broadcast by our friends at NPR) and as we took a belated listen we found us marveling once again at "So Wrong For Me", a [...]
Filed under: The Hit List , Free MP3 Download of the Day In a summer concert circuit crowded with large-scale music festivals, George Wein's Newport Folk Fest consistently stands out for its impressive multigenerational lineup of blues, folk and bluegrass acts. This weekend, an eclectic mix of artists including Andrew Bird, the Swell Season, and Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings will be taking the [...]

Like Loud Loop Press, the Do-Division Street Fest and Sidewalk Sale likes to keep things local. From the food to the vendors, right down to the bands that play, the focus is directly on Chicago. This year's fest, held Saturday and Sunday, June 5th & 6th on Division between Ashland and Levitt, will have two stages booked by Empty Bottle Presents and Subterranean / House Call Entertainment chock full of great Chicago bands. Among those recruited to perform are heavy [...]
Pretty hectic day at CoS today so far ! But we can always make time to report on a new festival, especially one that looks this good. This August 28-29 will see the launch of the LouFest , a new two-day music festival set to take place at Forest Park in St. Louis, Missouri. The inaugural lineup brandishes itself in sporting a who's who in the ever evolving indie music scene. Included are the likes of She & Him, Broken Social Scene, Built to Spill, Wilco's Jeff Tweedy ( who is having his own festival btw ), [...]

Earlier this week, news leaked that Levon Helm would take his Ramble on the road to appear at the 51st installment of the legendary Newport Folk Festival . Well, today festival organizers have revealed the rather impressive initial batch of artists that will be joining the former drummer for The Band over the course of the weekend. The fest , which is set to take place from July 30 - August 1 at Fort Adams State Park, will feature a heavy dose of contemporary roots and folk-minded acts that includes HT faves Jim James, The Avett [...]
It's a roots rock extravaganza at the hippest club in town for a bargain basement price. Not only that, but that hip club, Johnny Brenda's , actually lets you know each band's set time... in advance! So come on out Wednesday night for three full sets at 9, 10 and 11 for the low, low price of $12.00. 9:00 - Kicking off the night's festivities is Jason Boesel, the former Rilo Kiley drummer whose husky drawl sits comfortably between a laid back Robert Earl Keen or an amped-up Townes van Zandt. There's a lot of West Texas [...]
Cory Chisel and The Wandering Sons - Born Again I think I'm gonna go see these guys who are opening for Dawes and Jason Boesel at Iota Cafe Feb 23rd . The problem is it's a Tuesday night. But to see 3 good bands for $12 is hard to resist.
For anyone who might wonder if there are artists who can somehow follow in the footsteps of names such as Dylan, Springsteen and Waits -- and not sound like a pathetic imitative retread or hyped up "marketing campaign" in the process -- we've got some good news. Cory Chisel is the real deal, an Appleton, Wisconsin original, son of a Baptist minister, nephew of a blues-playing music buff who seems to have soaked in the right influences like inspired osmosis. You know it when you hear it -- and you'll know it when you hear Cory Chisel and [...]

While there have been a number of albums that have been absolutely incredible, music is remembered by the songs that top everything else that you go back to time and time again. This year has been no exception. Runner Up, 11 - Empire State Of Mind (Part II) Broken Down - Alicia Keys This was a song that I hadn't heard up until a couple days ago. Keys is not an artist who usually pops up [...]

11 - Yeah Ghost , Zero 7 Zero 7 is back with their fourth album, Yeah Ghost . While I still think that their best album is their first, [...]

This was a year of mixed priorities for me, and less of a focus on music than in prior years. Life gets in the way of such things, and as a result, this is a bit of a smaller list than I've presented in other years. That being said, the sound is no less potent, interesting and fun to listen to. Here's who I thought were some of the best new artists of 2009: Allie Moss - [...]

Our friends at Daytrotter just posted a 5-song session including the unreleased "I'm Not The Man I Thought You'd Meet." I caught Cory last night supporting Brendan Benson in Milwaukee. His set was the highlight and his band has never been tighter. Catch them if you can. Until then download the 5-song Daytrotter session . We really enjoyed Brendan Benson 's latest solo effort, My Old, Familiar Friend . We also really enjoyed Cory Chisel & The Wondering Sons' recent release, Death Won't Send A Letter . Beginning November 13th in St. Louis, Benson, along with his backing band featuring Brad Pemberton on drums (Ryan Adams), Jared Reynolds on bass (Ben Folds), and Mark Watrous [...]
