Cory Chisel & the Wandering Sons opened for Meiko this past Sunday at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis. Chisel, a Minnesotan native but now living in Appleton, WI, grew up on the folk-gospel music in his family's Baptist church, an influence that one can hear a glimmer of in the band's Americana-folk sound. Cory's family and friends were in the audience that evening, so Cory seemed very at ease

I already indicated that I am intrigued by Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons (enough to include them in the year-end wrap up ), but the reality is that we will have to wait and see as there is just not that much to know yet. We have the EP which, by definition, is short. We have reviews , which due to the limited amount of music out there, are short. And we have video , which there is quite a bit of, but which just about covers all the music out there, [...]

I've been traveling quite a bit for work without much time to write or even listen to all that much music. So here are three to consider that caught my interest in recent reviews and samplers—two new artists for me and one I have lost track of. First up is the indie instrument infused Anathallo's second album Canopy Glow . I have been listening to "The River" which reminds me of Andrew Bird (particularly the Mysterious Production of Eggs) [...]

Corey Chisel just released a live cover of the most covered song in the history of music following the election. Does "A Change Is Gonna Come" by Sam Cooke ever get old? It's arguably the greatest song ever and if you have a good set of pipes and can do it justice, let's hear it (unless you are trying out for American Idol). Corey Chisel passes the test. So does Ben Sollee . Corey Chisel - A Change Is Gonna Come Ben Sollee - A Change Is [...]

No matter what your political views it has been and amazing, historic and momentous week. The election of Barack Obama to the presidency of the United States of America is a triumph of hope over experience, of positivity over negativity, of optimism over pessimism. Can President Obama possibly live up to the hype and the expectations of a watching world? Is Obama the second coming of JFK or the USA's Tony Blair? Who knows? But for now let's look forward to the future with a renewed sense of hope and a spring in the step. [...]

Cory Chisel and The Wandering Sons don't like to be tied down to a genre. They list Americana, folk and neo-soul as their mainstays, but there is also some jazz, gospel, bluegrass and country shimmering through the cracks of the songs on their forthcoming EP Cabin Ghosts . This Wisconsin band have been flying under the radar for quite some time, with singer and guitar player Corey Chisel supplying the material. Part of the EP was recorded live and you can picture the septet in your minds eye on a small overcrowded stage shutting up [...]
