Around these offices there isn't a more eagerly anticipated 2012 album than the new one from Cory Chisel & The Wandering Sons. The Appleton, WI songwriter's 2009 album Death Won't Send A Letter we touted as "perhaps the finest album by a newcomer this year...music that touches the soul and raises a few hairs on the back of the neck at the same time." Chisel has said a new album has was completed last fall -- and we know that he's already booked a performance on Letterman for June 4. [...]

Click here to view the embedded video. A few months back I went to the annual John Lennon memorial held at First Ave in Minneapolis. It was a good night despite the shit acoustics of First Ave's main room, but one thing I forgot to do was pick up their album, the Minnesota Beatle Project: Vol. 2 . Well, I've been a complete airhead since until I saw the official video of Cory Chisel's cover of "Fixing A Hole". Cory Chisel and The Wandering Sons have covered this classic [...]
Cory Chisel 's major label debut album Death Won't Send A Letter was an '09 Top 5 favorite here at DC, one that we described as "perhaps the finest album by a newcomer this year...music that touches the soul and raises a few hairs on the back of the neck at the same time." Chisel and his band The Wandering Sons played the Newport Folk Festival this past summer ( broadcast by our friends at NPR) and as we took a belated listen we found us marveling once again at "So Wrong For Me", a [...]

I had the opportunity to see Appleton, Wisconsin native Cory Chisel with his touring band the Wandering Sons back in February at RIBCO in Rock Island opening for Dawes along with Jason Boesel . I wasn't familiar with Cory before I heard of that show, but quickly his track "Born Again" from his latest full length Death Won't Send A Letter became a favorite with it's urgent Animals-esque organ lead and his slightly hoarse delivery. His performance at the show was fantastic- full of energy [...]

Dar Williams and Stephen Kellogg sang "We've Got a Groovy Thing Goin' [...]

Last night's show at the Troubadour was super sweet. The highlight for me was seeing Cory Chisel work the room, crisply present yet smooth as mellow tobacco. Ever gracious and humble, Chisel masterfully plied the crowd, alternating between high-energy, full-band rockers and introspective solo or duet pieces (joined by lovely Adriel Harris). He shared one [...]

Dawes are coming to play Zanzabar on February 26th. Not sure how much it will cost, but I'll update once I find out. Cory Chisel & The Wandering Sons and Jason Boesel will open. Dawes hail from Los Angeles and are touring in support of their debut record, North Hills. You can give them a listen on myspace . [...]
It's a roots rock extravaganza at the hippest club in town for a bargain basement price. Not only that, but that hip club, Johnny Brenda's , actually lets you know each band's set time... in advance! So come on out Wednesday night for three full sets at 9, 10 and 11 for the low, low price of $12.00. 9:00 - Kicking off the night's festivities is Jason Boesel, the former Rilo Kiley drummer whose husky drawl sits comfortably between a laid back Robert Earl Keen or an amped-up Townes van Zandt. There's a lot of West Texas [...]

</a Jason Boesel has spent years looking at the butts of Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley), Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes) and Ben Lee - now it's time for the drummer to step out of the shadow and up to the mike. On January 12, Boesel released his first solo album, Hustler's Son , on Oberst's Team Love Records. Difficult to catagorize, Boesel's material is in the same post-alt.country (did I just make up a new genre?) league as [...]

It's Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday for you non-French speakers and if you're looking to get into the New Orleans spirit look no further than the Preservation the new album released today from the Big Easy's own Preservation Hall Jazz Band . Andrew Bird , who's among over 20 diverse artists recorded on the album, appears on the opening track "Shake It and Break It." With roots going back to the 1800's Preservation Hall has long been home to some of the finest [...]

Preservation Hall, despite it's name, seems anything but preserved. The New Orleans building was built in 1750, opened its doors as a music venue in 1961, and has survived several fires as well as the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina. With no running water or air conditioning, maybe it's about time the legendary venue got it's own benefit album. Preservation: An Album to Benefit Preservation Hall & the Preservation Hall Music Outreach Program comes out on Fat Tuesday, February 16. The album (available as a single disc, double disc, or double LP) features performances from Andrew Bird , [...]
When I was in Nashville last month, I stumbled upon Brendan Benson and Cory Chisel playing an afternoon set to a packed crowd at Grimey's record store (surely one of the coolest music meccas on the planet). There was free beer (Magic Hat?) being handed out for the price of free, and it was as if I had slipped over to heaven for an hour there amidst the music. Brendan Benson is noted these days for his role in [...]
Some of the great shows I saw last year were part of the legendary Daytrotter Barnstormer shows - I experienced some very powerful performances in these cozy barn settings. One of the bands that really delivered some transcendent shows was Dawes. And, frankly, most everyone I've talked to who has experienced Dawes' live show says the same thing. It's like a rock and roll revival. Dawes will be back in the area delivering their sermon of multi-part harmonies and Heartbreaker guitars on Monday, February 15th [...]

Filed under: Video , Exclusive While he was crafting his debut album of folk-influenced tunes, 'Death Won't Send a Letter,' Cory Chisel happened to find a spiritual brother in solo rocker and sometime- Raconteurs member Brendan Benson . As the two helped shape the sound of 'Death' and eventually toured together, they also realized that they shared a mutual love for Tom Petty . "The ' Running Down a Dream ' documentary had been playing a lot on the bus," Chisel tells Spinner, "and we were all [...]
