[ Story ] ( buy vinyl ) ( buy mp3s ) In 2009 the rule over the mysterious realms of white label business lay definitively in the hands of techno with thrilling chapters being issued from the likes of Horizontal Ground, Frozen Border, Traversable Wormhole and Wax. Towards the close of the year, though, a contender appeared in the form of a slow-mo house maverick who was stirring up plenty of dialogue with astoundingly fine vinyl-only discs. Bearing no information they were known only as belonging on the Cottam label, and the [...]

After a long night watching the election whilst trying to scour the internet for fresh new music, I came up dissapointed on both counts, with a political system and an itunes account both lacking fresh ideas...so it was quite a relief checking my feeds today to find Pelski's latest post has brought my attention to the emerging UK producer, Cottam . In Pelski's words think "rough vintage percussion topped by delicious African vocals: funky, elated and impossibly upbeat". Cottam - #2 Side B [...]

I wrote this a month or two ago but hadn't got round to posting. Exams and dissertation are hitting on me hard but will be back banging out posts soon... Without too much hyperbole, I can say hand-on-my-heart that Cottam's three Untitled EPs, released last year, are one of the best series I've ever heard: uplifting, original, throwback ... all in one breath. Cottam is an up-and-coming UK producer, who rides dirty house grooves and beefy slabs of percussion. But what really invogorates them is his fresh use of samples, [...]

Cottam is a bit of an enigma. Living near Preston in the UK, he has had 3 untitled releases on his own label and some others under "unknown artist" on the Story label. There's only one interview that I can find but hopefully we will have some words from him here on the Labs later this year. I've picked the B side from his second release which combines slo mo house with some amazing afrobeats and vocals. At just over ten minutes it just builds nicely and is a real groover. He also kindly shares his [...]
Back in the day. When I was young. Grr. About 12. A friend invited me over to his house. Never been invited over personally to this guy's house, by he, himself. Main abode. 'Call over! We're playing folf! Are you in?!' Ehh... Yup. Ok! Sounds good, I'll be over! Not sure what folf is, but sounds like [...]

Cottam - 001 Side A [See post to listen to audio] How hard is it to be an anonymous producer? Well, it's probably not that hard to be anonymous, but to be anonymous and popular seems to be an accomplishment. Each week brings forward a new producer who (more or less successfully) hides behind the internet's anonymity. In some cases, the anonymity is a result of a wish to let the music speak for itself (think Burial ) or to create an even stronger non-brand (like [...]
Cottam has been spinning other peoples records from the age of 14 - after 'borrowing' his brothers 80s soul and early hip hop he discovered house music and was hooked. Clubbing in the north... Welcome to the second edition of our podcast feature - "The Random Residency" where we will take an in - depth look at the resident DJ. Resident DJ's play a big part in the scene as they are an integral part of the set up & many have a vast musical knowledge & background. However their not always credited for the job they do as they can be easily out-shadowed by the guest, headline DJ. This time around were heading down south to the East end of London where we'll hook up with DJ MB - who is resident at [...]

Fresh from his self-titled releases that have caused a fair bit of fuss in record shops over the world, we welcome on board English soul tinged, slo-mo producer, Cottam for the 16th Random Mix. Cottam - Cottam 2 (Cottam) (buy) After looping up Erykah Badu and (possibly) James Brown on his last outing, Cottam keeps the thumpy slo-mo template but invites Angie Stone along for the ride on his new, strictly vinyl EP, imaginatively titled Cottam 2. On Side A, we're treated to a deep, jacked up edit of 'Pissed Off'. Word from the Cottam camp suggests our hero cut his teeth on the floors of loopy techno and this shows, as he takes D'Angelo's old flame on an insistent 12 minute, sub 110 spin [...]
