This is probably the fastest compilation we've ever had to put together. We took many suggestions and opted for a cheery winter. Some call this brand of music disposable, we call it pop genius. This is meant to make you go up and over. Fun radio-friendly tracks with great attitude - a whole lotta cotton candy goodness. We're down for whatever! :: Download :: Filed under: Beats , Jambalaya , Mix It Up Tagged: arts , candy , Cotton candy , music , [...]

Part 1 of 5 in the Teen Beat 26 Anniversary Showcase: Teen Beat Week! The DC/Cambridge based label Teen Beat held a short six day East Coast tour celebrating Teen Beat's 26th year of purveyors of the best in indie rock. Each of the dates on the tour had wildly differing line-ups with the only constant being Unrest headlining each of the proceedings. I was only able to make it to one of the three NYC area shows and therefore missed the show that included Tuscadero . (plaintive scream: "Whyyyyy!") [...]

Former Idolator honcho Maura Johnston interviews one of my heroes, Mark Robinson (of Teenbeat, Unrest, and Cotton Candy fame), in a cool, informative, and laid back Q&A session over at eMusic . In it Robinson discusses the nostalgic personal touch of home-dubbing cassettes, Unrest's reunion tour, his proclivity for patterns in numbering, and his favorite designers. I failed to make the three-and-a-half hour drive to Chapel Hill last Sunday to catch the Unrest show, which I knew I would immediately regret. So, I will have to stock up on any leftover merch if/when it shows up in [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Just before Unrest took the stage Friday night at Brooklyn's Bell House, capping the fourth in a series of six concerts commemorating the 26th anniversary of Teen Beat Records , Patrick Bryant, the evening's MC, made a sly observation about the audience. "I want to thank the people that really made this happen," he said. "The babysitters of the greater New York City area." Indeed, the sold-out club was teeming with aging hipsters, 40-somethings who likely discovered Teen [...]
When Unrest disbanded at what I considered to be the height of its powers in 1994, my college radio-infused world was devastated. Unrest was my favorite band at the time, simply because its wildly erratic yet highly collectible records mimicked what I thought made college radio so interesting and intriguing and vital. The abrupt mood shifts, random non-sequiturs, and brazen avant-silliness were all packaged in a DIY shell with a dark, sardonic undercurrent (and, of course, exquisite design). You couldn't pin that band down. Granted, its final two albums veered sharply in a clean, clinical direction, but the sum of [...]

Looking at the different best-of lists for 2009 and best-of the decade from TSOI contributors there are surprisingly few overlaps. Based on these lists, TSOI opinions on music might diverge more than one might think, however, there is one sure-fire point that all in the TSOI fold are in agreement: Mark Robinson performing live in any form is solid gold (Note that separate Flin Flon shows made best concerts of the decade from Kevin and Avalanche ). His latest incarnation, a collaboration with [...]

So, I was just browsing for records recently at Lunchbox Records in Charlotte, NC (an awesome record store, by the way) when I happened across a 73 by a band called Cotton Candy. The clerk had written "Mark Robinson" on a sticker above the price tag, which is why I picked it up. Well, because of that and the cool artwork. Mark Robinson, as you may well know, owns Teenbeat records, home of one of my favorite defunct bands, Unrest , which Robinson also fronted. As an avid collector of all things Unrest, I must [...]
