I'm no stranger to western Maryland. This gorgeous, weird land has much more in common with John Denver's vision of West Virginia than The Wire's Baltimore or spring break in Ocean City. Driving through the formidable valleys and sunny plains always feels like traveling back a bit in time and space; it makes total sense that Cotton Jones and their earthy sound hail from these rolling hills. The sound of the folk quartet hearkens back to the psychedelic folk days of the mid 19602s; their production style reinforces the dusty-vinyl aesthetic. "Gone the Bells", the fourth track from their [...]
THAO AND THE GET DOWN STAY DOWN, ALBATROSS ( Doug Fir , 830 E Burnside) Read our article on Thao and the Get Down Stay Down. WHITE LUNG, ARCTIC FLOWERS ( Bunk Bar , 1028 SE Water) The three ladies and one dude that make up Vancouver, BC's White Lung emit thunderous, galloping noise that makes hairs stand on end. Go and hear 'em blast punk loudly into all your orifices—it's just the mid-week kick [...]

Frightened Rabbit return to Seattle this Friday / photo by Morgen Schuler With the KEXP Spring Fundraising Drive now over (and thank you to everyone who pledged a gift of support), it's time to get down to some live music in Seattle. This week, things start with a couple nice little shows at Easy Street Records in West Seattle with Pickwick on Monday night, and The Cave Singers on Tuesday night. Looking for other options on Tuesday night? There's also a SXSW Send Off Show with Lemolo, OC Notes, Spac3man, [...]

Despite being inactive on the recording front for almost 2 years it is somewhat reassuring to find out that that lonesome duo known as Cotton Jones are currently touring. They're not conventional by any manner of means (which is odd given Michael Nau/Whitney McGraw's previous work with indie poppers Page France) but somehow, by some means their songs forever infiltrate my innards. This tickler comes from way back in 2009 (the 'Rio Ranger' EP) and features stunningly awkward arrangements that are also devilishly memorable. In that sense the vocals could have become incidental but as is Cotton Jones gift they [...]

There's still time to catch the daytime session of East Nashville Underground if you head over soon (kicks off at 1PM)! If you're looking for a change of pace this evening though, I recommend you should check out my This Weekend in Nashville Saturday pick, Dr. Dog at Marathon Music Works . They've gone from a lo-fi alt/indie band to more of a psychedelic, retro, poppy sound over their constantly evolutionary decade of releases (7 full-lengths now). Not only has the band pushed and updated their [...]

Dr. Dog It's a firmly held belief for me that Haw River Ballroom is the finest venue in the state, and each show I attend at the gorgeous venue drives that point further and further home. Between the fine gas station dining of the Saxapahaw General Store (it's not at all what it sounds like, incredible food with a diverse menu!) and the breath taking aesthetics of the ballroom, there's nothing to dislike about this place. The crowd got surprisingly wild for a Monday night, but when you've got an incredible act like Dr. Dog on [...]

I don't know about you, but to me there's something about bedtime during the summer that fills me with divine peace. Maybe it has to do with the fresh air, the light blankets, airy clothing and and overall breezy environment. Does it get any better than that? It can! I've compiled a relaxing and peaceful summer lullaby playlist for you to drift off to. So lay back and relax in whatever way you prefer and allow the music to do the rest. Shhhhhh. 1. [...]

Slightly older track here that's been coming up on my daily shuffle and has been stuck in my head for days now ever since I first heard it. And what I think I like most about "Down Beside Em" is that it is just such a chill tune, perfect for your upcoming drive to the beach or even for when you are closing down the party at 7am. There's just this psychedelic, lo-fi folk vibe in "Down Beside Em' that sounds as if Jefferson Airplane got together with Edward Sharpe and laid down one [...]

Hmmm, how do I even start this off? It feels like I have missed so much new music over the past few months. Here are some songs that have found their way into my headphones during that time. Also, there are a few classics mixed in there to fill the void. Free mp3: Brendan Losch - Son of a Gun Free mp3: Hundred Visions - Last Cab From Tunis [...]
Last summer, rock 'n' roll six-piece Dr. Dog made a return to its Philadelphia home studio to record its seventh album, Be The Void (Anti-). In MAGNET #85 (order a copy here), we talked to the group's founding members, co-songwriters and vocalists Scott McMicken (guitar) and Toby Leaman (bass), about that journey, and what it [...]

Tweet You better turn the volume up to the nth degree for this be a quiet one. Feisty too but what would you expect from a partnership made up ex Page France-r Michael Nau and a smokingWhitney McGraw. The pair have been inconsistent in their consistency in releasing new records which is frustrating because they is a lot of juice in their twist on modern Americana. That said this comes from the relatively close environs of last year and an EP called [...]

Sticking with the new theme around here...this is a playlist with choice songs from a mixed cd I just put in my mom's PT Cruiser. It's pretty fast. 1. Yellow Ostrich - Marathon Runner 2. Plants & Animals - Lightshow 3. Brian TV - Something About Love 4. ALLAH-LAHS - Catamaran [...]

There were so many good EPs this year that they deserved their own list, although they easily could have competed with my top spots for albums. Bands, especially new bands, blew me away with their three to four flawless songs time and time again. The fact that these songs aren't getting lost in the shuffle of a mediocre 10 song album made a lot of bands shine brighter than more seasoned groups with LPs out this year. Here's what stood out the most for me. 1. [...]
