The Cougars - I Wish it Would Rain Jamaica to Toronto: Soul Funk & Reggae, 1967-1974 (Light in the Attic, 2006) I've just finished going through this compilation of recordings by Jamaican musicians in Toronto in the late 60s and early 7os, and I thought I'd highlight this one song for those that might be interested. First of all, though, you should probably just ignore the title of the collection, cause there's quite a bit of stuff on here that I don't think really falls under the [...]

So I came across this compilation a while ago titled Jamaica to Toronto: Soul Funk & Reggae 1967-1974 , and I didn't get around to listening to it until just now... and there are some really great songs on it. Some of the recording is a little lo-fi, but this just added to the intrigue. I tried finding anything on the internet having to do with the band The Cougars, who wrote two of the songs posted below, and I found this article. Apparently there was this whole reggae/funk music scene going on in [...]

... To Random Strangers. Because it's that pretty and christmas-romantic-comedy-hear twarming-esque Basically I was fronting like I had some money in my pockets and went to Saks Fifth Avenue to potentially land me a botox cougar type who had no problems lacing me out in gucci/prada type apparel that I could go home and ebay in the name of paying rent. What I stumbled upon as I wandered through the rain was either a hugh grant movie come to life or a christian rave or all the best parts of those two things [...]
THE SNIPER DRUM SONG CHAMPION OF THE ARENA Jackie Mittoo Champion in the Arena 1976-1977 Blood and Fire : 2003 [Buy It] My friend BJ came over the other night; we sat around listening to Jackie Mittoo. BJ and I both love Jamaican music, but while I'm heavily into the sixties stuff - Toots, Prince Buster, the Skatellites - and think that, say, the stuff Bob Marley's best-known for pales in comparison to the tracks he recorded at Studio One [...]

It's time to shift gears a bit. Cougar are a post-rock band like Trans Am, not a hard rock band like Chevelle, or a suck rock band like REO Speedwagon. Precise musicianship and stirring melodies are the name of their game. Their latest cd, the simply titled, Law, came about this past October, and it's a disc that has wedged itself firmly in my soundsystem over the past few days. "Atlatl" is the lead track on Law. It starts with a slow, stirring guitar line and light, muted percussion. Like waiting at an [...]

SK Best of 2006 alert! Yesterday was a good day because of the arrival of this record, which immediately jumps to the head of the holiday listening line. If you are a fan of this site, then you like the mix of acoustic and electronic and no record released this year does it as well as Law by Madison, Wisconsin's Cougar . These dudes are on the wavelength and totally understand the subtle dynamics that make both electronic and instrumental rock such affecting and emotive music and their use of both melody and space will instantly delight. [...]

I picked up a very interesting compilation the other day called GS I Love You: Japanese Garage Bands of the '60s . It consists of Japanese garage bands in the 1960s, where the scene was just starting to erupt. These bands had essential Western influences, but few were brave enough to incorporate Asian elements. You'll find that most of the bands sing in heavily accented English, due to their Western music obsessions but some of them were smart enough to recognize that a difference in language would not matter significantly if the music and songwriting [...]
