When I started this blog, my idea was to flag new releases I enjoy while occasionally dipping into the archives of pop. As it has turned out, I've had greater fun doing nostalgia. But that means I've sometimes neglected the original purpose of this blog: to promote new music which I like. So, here are some songs from new releases (and one that is a year old) which I am listening to at the moment
Today's list is predominantly piano-based. My next post will honor the original shuffle-mode format, but here are five quick jams I find relaxing on this beautiful Kansas City Sunday afternoon. Song: Epitaph Artist: Judas Priest Album: Sad Wings of Destiny Comments: How did J.P. turn into such a meathead icon? I find the musicianship and ambition on their first two records to be head & shoulders above any of their bastard offspring. Of course, that goes for the band's own output as well. This particular tune from Judas Priest's sophomore album showcases [...]

Todays Blog is dedicated to Katharina, who has to lie in bed to cure a headache (not a hangover!) and whatever else. At least she's got an excuse to watch House the whole day through without bad conscience. I bet she's just faking her illness for this reason.... Anyway, this is supposed to be her post and the first thing I think of when I think about Katha is Saddle Creek and this leads us directly to Omaha, "somewhere in the middle of America". [...]
Late last night it started snowing here. I knew that the storm was coming, and it was dark when the flakes started floating down. The world sounds different when it is snowing. It's almost like everything went into negative decibels or maybe all sound went subsonic like whale calls or something. Have you ever been in your house and you think it is silent, but then the refrigerator's motor turns off and your head almost turns inside out with the vacuum? In the face of so much silence, you want to drop something and break the crystalline web you are [...]
My first reaction to hearing the new song 1492 from Counting Crows was "WHAT!, who do these guys think they are? Phantom Planet?" And by Phantom Planet I'm referencing a band who started with a largely melodic and acoustic beginning only to throw their entire, and largely successful, formula out the window in favor of a more modern and edgy sound. Well that and this song 1492 sounds like it belongs on PP's self titled third full length. But honestly, this is no Long December. This is no Autumn and Everything After. This isn't [...]

On March 25th, Counting Crows will release the double-length CD "Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings." It's their eighth album and their first since 2006's " New Amsterdam: Live at Heineken Music Hall ," - a 2003 performance of their songs recorded in front of an audience. The new record represents the first new material from the band in studio in five years (" Films about Ghosts " - 2003). The new album represents a return to form for one of America's best bands and arguably one of its most creative songwriters in Adam Duritz. What follows is [...]

Brock & I have plethora of Counting Crows for you today, hopefully it will sate your appetite until March 25th when the new album comes out. First, some album tracks: On Tuesday, Counting Crows released their first "official" single from Saturday Nights, Sunday Mornings , a little ditty called "You Can't Count on Me". This one's a little poppy, something that certainly could have fit onto Hard Candy . Cowboys, another track that's found it's [...]

Yesterday afternoon, the Counting Crows played a tough-to-get-into set on the WXPN World Cafe stage in Philad elphia . I asked my friend say hi to Adam for me, and he wrote back: " Adam was incredible . . . It was the first time they played '1492' live. It was the 2nd time they played the single live. There was magic in the room. And he was really gracious and thankful to be offered the opportunity to do this. What a day here ." [...]
Let the 90's nostalgia begin! With the possibility of another Clinton in the White House - though, thankfully Barack Obama's trouncing of Hillary Clinton in South Carolina may slow that train - new albums by 90's rock bands are the next indicator of a revival of the decade of ...

Idle Hands [ [...]
Counting Crows have made two new tracks available from their upcoming,"Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings," the band's fifth studio album. The album, due out March 25 will be split into two distinct sides, not an uncommon practice in the archaic days of vinyl, Saturday Nights will feature the more amped up rock tunes and Sunday Mornings will have a more mellow acoustic feel. 1492 is speculated to be the 6th and final track on the Saturday Mornings side. It sounds like your typical Crows' rock, with a searing [...]

I'm sure a bunch of other blogs covered this before I have, but in case you missed it or haven't yet heard, the Counting Crows will release their first album in nearly five years on March 25th, Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings . The concept of the music is split into two parts: rockers (Saturday Nights) and folk-like songs (Sunday Mornings). “Saturday night is when you sin and Sunday is when you regret. Sinning is often done very loudly, angrily, bitterly, violently,” explains singer Adam Duritz. When bands go [...]

What a crazy week. It actually snowed in Atlanta, enough so that a friend of mine was able to make a mini-snowman. My brake lights stopped working, thanks to a well-known design fault in the brake pedal switch that activates them. Thankfully, the repairs were covered under a recall, and the snow melted before the lights went out. Except for the Counting Crows, this week's artists are all pretty much new to me- and they're all great. It's like a musical vacation for your ears. Start out in the UK with the slowhand blues of Back Door Slam's [...]
