Marker overlooking the Woodstock Music and Arts Fair grounds near Bethel, NY. There isn't much more to say about Woodstock that we didn't say here , here or here ... but the 43rd anniversary of the historic music festival is coming up this week (Aug. 15-17) and we thought it would be a good opportunity to look back for a few minutes. Why should we celebrate Woodstock? Someone asked that once, then he answered his own question: [...]
Music for the body, mind, soul, and funny bone.

Yeah, it was 42 years ago this weekend, more or less. I came upon a child of God, he was walking along the road. And I asked him, "Where are you going?" And this he told me: "Sir, you can park up in the parking lot." He was one of the volunteers who hang around the green, grassy fields where they held the Woodstock Music and Art Fair, about 42 years ago. We drove up there from New York City on a hot July Monday, and we walked through the nice museum and the [...]

During the reigning years of San Francisco headband Country Joe and the Fish, singer and songwriter Joe McDonald took some time out to head to Nashville and record a pair of solo albums with the city's top session men. Released on the iconic Vanguard Records, these two albums saw McDonald take a broad left turn, away from psychedelia and deep into the traditional folk and country music that had helped inform his earlier years as a radical-political folksinger. Indeed, the first of these two albums, Thinking of Woody Guthrie, was a heartfelt, play-it-straight tribute to the daddy of [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , Exclusive Country Joe McDonald is best remembered for his performance with Country Joe and the Fish, at the original Woodstock. His iconic protest song 'I Feel Like I'm Fixin' to Die Rag' and the band's X-rated performance of the 'Fish Cheer' have become touchstones of the festival. Spinner spoke with the singer, songwriter, author and archivist from his home in Berkeley, Calif. Can you explain what you'll be doing at [...]

As Maks points out here , Vanessa Contenay-Quinones' gorgeous new video - not to miss, see below or here - is based on the Danish 1970 taboo-breaker Stille dage i Clichy, again based on Henry Miller's best novel which quite made my day when I discovered it on Dad's sober looking bedroom shelf at age thirteen, a pre-beatnik study already written in the early 40s though unpublished until 1956 (by "sex" publisher Olympia Press, for sure). Actually, the movie isn't nearly as hot as Vanessa's voice, but features a remarkable soundtrack, Andy Sundstroem's hommage to the location [...]

Is anyone else sick of this Woodstock nostalgia ? Boomers get over it. Sure there were some great performances, but the vast majority of people who attended and played Woodstock traded in their freewheeling hippie ways years ago. I mean, these are the people who elected Bush. Vietnam was a rallying cry and I bet some of these folks are all misty eyed when they see that Country Joe McDonald video. But where were these conscientious objectors on Iraq? Well, I guess it wasn't their turn.
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , Video The wonders of modern technology let music lovers relive Woodstock by the dull gleam of a computer monitor, even if we (or even our parents) weren't able to experience the fabled festival first hand. It isn't the same on video, of course, but concerts haven't been the same since the 1969 event, either. So while we can't transport you back in time (The sights! The smells! The mind-altering substances!), we can collect some video highlights of Woodstock to celebrate this 40th anniversary of [...]
Technically, the archive hosts the biggest collection of covers, but they've got all those original tunes in there, too. I cut through the bullshit and give you the goods. One cover from several of my favorite bands with collections in the archive. Dig it. When the Levee Breaks (Led Zep)-John Popper (of Blues Traveller) Somewhere Over the Rainbow-Jefferson Starship Never Tear Us Apart (INXS)-John Mayer Gimme Some Lovin' (Spencer Davis Group)-G Love and Special Sauce [...]

It seems the East Coast-West Coast rivalry is being dug up again, which we’re sure Biggee and Tupac would be amused at. It’s 40 years ago this August that the legendary Woodstock festival took place, which saw electric performances by Santana, Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, The Who, CSNY, and Jimi Hendrix among others. Now, though, the celebration of four decades of influential music is being disputed by San Francisco and New York companies, who are arguing who owns the rights to the name “Woodstock.” Via [...]
MUSIC NEWS - With the increased interest in all things Woodstock and the original event's 40th Anniversary, some legal squables has already started. And now, the organizer's of San Francisco's planned daylong celebration have announced that they will fight the original Woodstock promoters. These are the same Summer of Love folks that revisit the Hippie Sacred Ground in Golden Gate Park every 10 years to celebrate San Francisco's Human Be In that became the Summer of Love that became the Woodstock Generation [...]

While Luther Dickinson has been spending his off time from the NMAS as a member of the Black Crowes, his band mates brother Cody and Chris Chew have a side-project of their own - the Southern blues and boogie-rock band Hill Country Revue , that also features Ed “Hot” Cleveland (drums), Daniel Coburn (vocals/harp) and Kirk Smithhart (guitar/vocals). The band, who released their debut album Make a Move today, are set to hit the road later this month for a mix of festival appearances, club dates and two support slots for Dave Matthews Band that [...]

As we told you about two months ago, Woodstock promoter Michael Lang was in search of a spot to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Woodstock. And after scoping out Prospect Park's Long Meadow for the event, it has now been confirmed that the festival will instead be getting back to its roots; taking place at its original location in Bethel Woods, with a handful of the original performers added on to the roster. According to the Associated Press [via The [...]

Well, they're calling it "Heroes Of Woodstock," or the "Bethel Woods Music Festival" - it depends on where you look. But on Saturday, August 15, the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in upstate New York will host a music festival on the grounds of the original 1969 Woodstock Music and Arts Festival. The performers listed include the Levon Helm Band, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Ten Years After, Canned Heat, Mountain (with Leslie West and Corky Laing), and Country Joe McDonald. They're not going to have it in a wild, open field - this festival will [...]

Happy Earth Day inhabitants of the planet! Today is a great time to focus on the big and small ways we can all do our part at home, work, school and in our communities on a daily basis to nurture our planet and conserve our natural resources.
