Today is May Day, aka International Workers' Day , and AfroPunk has a great list of 10 songs that can serve as the perfect soundtrack for your day. It's hard to pick a favorite from this list, but I think I gotta go with a classic, "5 Million Ways To Kill A C.E.O" from The Coup. Not only does the track have the perfect lyrics for rebellion, but the Coup walks the walk, as Boots Riley has been involved in Occupy Oakland and a host of other radical movements. [...]

If You're Really There [...]

Did you guys hear about Lupe Fiasco getting escorted off the stage by security at a pre-inaugural concert for performing a thirty minute song railing against Obama? This is the kind of thing I can get behind, and I LIKE Obama. Don't be afraid to be loud, y'all. This little story has nothing to do with this month's mix though. I just wanted to mention it because it's one of my favorite stories this week, and you should check out Lupe's new album Food & Liquor II because it's pretty good. I really appreciate the fact that he [...]

Watching these videos you might be thinking: political outrage hasn't seen this much ferocity in music since Rage Against the Machine disbanded a dozen years ago. The fact is, Raymond "Boots" Riley and his band The Coup have been making socially outspoken jams for just as long and have turned out even more incendiary albums like early 902s LPs Kill My Landlord and 19942s Genocide & Juice and 19982s Steal This Album . Their 2012 release, Sorry to Bother You , is their first to feature all live instrumentation and because of [...]
The long time Oakland staple, The Coup puts it down in the soon to be legendary Seattle studio KEXP radio.
For fans of Beth Orton, Tom Waits or Nick Cave, Anti Records is the sister label of Epitaph Records. Founded in 1999 with an initial focus on punk rock, Anti Records has now moved its focus across the worlds of country, indie, rock, folk, soul, hip-hop, rap and reggae. Managed by Andy Kaulkin, this label makes more sense than the ramblings of a 50 plus year-old man coaxed to the teeth on cannabis. DR. DOG – These Days JASON LYTLE - Dept. Of Disappearance [...]
Assuming the majority of the readership doesn't speak a lick of French, like myself, "coupe & visse" translates roughly into chopped and screwed. By this time if you see Tommy Kruise and chopped and screwed in the same sentence, you can assume that there's something good happening. Tommy released this 10-track chopped-and-screwed mixtape and I have to say it's good to hear more from the Canadian trap lord. All these tracks are gems from the Canadian rap culture, so Kruise just felt it right to put his own spin on these classics. Get your taste of Canadian [...]

What did we think of the political hip-hop group's sixth full-length album? ANTI-, 2012 5.8 / 10.0 It’s too late to get through to Boots Riley ’s political hip-hop group, but if I had to give The Coup one piece of advice, it would be [...]
XPN Welcomes emerging indie three-piece Guards to Kung Fu Necktie tonight. ONUINU, MINDEN ( Doug Fir , 830 E Burnside) Portland's own Onuinu—AKA Dorian Duvall—is getting a lot of attention lately, and for good reason. At once catchy and hypnotic, his dense, synth-y electro-pop is unlike anything else out there. And better than just about anything else out there, too. ERIK HENRIKSEN THE COUP, SPEAKER MINDS ( Bob White Theatre , 6423 SE Foster) The new Coup album, Sorry to Bother You , uses new sounds to get their message across: a [...]

Man, props to the Coup for making one of the most absurd hip-hop videos of the year. The visuals for "Your Parents' Cocaine" are filled with rich-kid puppets doing massive lines of cocaine, partying like idiots, and causing a white-boy ruckus. And it all goes down while the kazoo-led track plays in the background and the lyrics bounce across the front of your screen. You probably shouldn't sing along if you're at work or in a library, though...

I thought nothing would come close to topping Sufjan Steven's claymation zombie/snowman video from a few weeks back. But, The Coup have made me second guess myself. Watch Your Parents' Cocaine now! Their album Sorry to Bother You just came out!
