I hardly speak a lick of French (despite three years of it in High School) but in the past few years I've really taken to French language pop, be it the '60s classics or the new wave. Even hip hop. You don't need to understand the lyrics -- it just sounds good. (I still don't know what Michael Stipe, Mark E Smith or Elizabeth Frazer were singing in the '80s.( Anyway, I listened to a lot of Francophone artists this year. Here's nine I especially liked. [...]
The 2010 Music Alliance Pact flashback Every month throughout 2010 I've had the pleasure of being able to represent Denmark in the awesome blog network Music Alliance Pact (MAP), now featuring 36 blogs from 36 countries around the globe who have joined forced to bring people a free taste of what's going on musically in their respective nations on the 15 of every month. It's the gift that keeps on giving, and for this year-end retrospect I thought I'd share the 12 [...]

"Cache cache dans la nuit" Now for something completely different. Let me introduce you to Cours Lapin , a Danish foursome whose specialty is amazingly atmospheric indie pop inspired by theatre, film noir and the beautiful French language. It's not entirely surprising that the four band members are film composers because the deliciously mysterious music they make wouldn't at all sound out of place in the background of a sexy, dark celluloid masterpiece. I say background [...]

You are taken into a moviesque underworld of twisted French fairytales mixed with sexy finger clipping jive from the first minute. Cours Lapin consist of four Danish film composers Asger Baden , Peder , Jonas Struck and Louise Alenius and the mood of the album delivers on this: The album, Un, Deux, Trois moves from the dark and sensual to naive and hopeful, reminiscent of the atmosphere found in the films of Tim Burton and David Lynch. One minute you are initiated into the [...]

Much has been made of the fact that Cours Lapin are four well established Danish film score composers joined up to create a lilting album of pseudo-French fairytale music in the chanson tradition (sentimental with a special focus on the lyrics). Understanding the combined pedigree of Louise Alenius (vox), Asger Baden (keyboard), Peder (keyboard / producer) and Jonas Struck (guitar) shouldn't really increase my appreciation of their self-titled debut but it does, because it's not often I hear sultry, warm French-language pop that originated in a frigid Scandinavian clime. You really would [...]

Denmark's not really the first country you think of when you go look for French singing, fragile girls. That is probably why I missed the memo's about Cours lapin , a Danish foursome consisting of three guys and one girl who make money making music for films and documentaries. The girl's Louise Alenius , and if you're a big Biolay-fan you know her babyvoice from a song on Benjamin's Clara et Moi-soundtrack. Cours lapin's first album is out now, sporting 11 songs that meander between Amélie-style chansons (like Mes larmes secretes) and darker, Portishead-ish stuff like Débutants. Cache [...]

Cours Lapin are four Danish film score composers who make twisted pop fairytales drawing from the old 'chanson' tradition, inspired by the films of Tim Burton and David Lynch. Sounds interesting, yes? Though their album isn't out till September, Rough Trade have already marked it as one of their Album's Of The Week. For a little taster, you can hear / download the track 'Cache-Cache' here , then catch the band live at the following dates: Death Disco @ Nottinghill Arts club, Wednesday July 7th at 9pm. [...]
Four Danes making French music? Ok then. Cours Lapin are film scorers, but with "Cache Cache" they've created an amazing little, er, cinematic piece of French pop brilliance, a sort of cutesy cafe anthem. The band's eponymous debut (via Fake Diamond Records) was picked up by Rough Trade East and the band will play an [...]
I'm not in this month's MAP, though the eagle-eyed among you may want to query that. "Look", you say, "a little Daily Growl entry for England, just like usual". But no my friends, no. Because of all the hospital shenanigans at the start of the month, I never got round ...
