Longtime readers may recall a talented young singer/songwriter we covered waaaay back in the early ages of the Internet (i.e. April of 2009) named Cousin Chris (although his immediate family know him as Chris Schreiber). Well, Chris has now teamed up with a full band and has been hard at work in the studio recording a slew of new tunes. He has offered us a sneak preview from the recording sessions by way of a rough cut for a new tune called "Gonna Be Alright." The track features a loose, bright riff that leads an upbeat melody alongside [...]

As a committed omnivore, I'm very skeptical of meals that don't include meat or fish. That is not to say I completely eschew vegetarian meals, just that I approach these meals with lowered expectations unless there are mushrooms involved (I love mushrooms like nobody's business). The same is true for instrumental bands. I certainly don't dislike instrumental music (in fact, most of the best jazz and electronica is instrumental), but instrumental rock music is a tough sell for me. In other words, I approach any instrumental rock band (especially a two-piece) with the same skepticism I [...]

소녀시대 (Girl's Generation) - "남자친구 (Boyfriend)" "What would be my, how should I call it, spontaneous attitude towards the universe? It's a very dark one. The first one, the first thesis would have been: a kind of total vanity. There is nothing, basically. I mean it quite literally. Like, ultimately there are just some fragments, some vanishing things, if you look at the universe it's one big void. But then how do things emerge? Here, I feel a kind of spontaneous affinity with quantum physics. Where, you know, the idea there is that the universe is [...]
I'm frequently reminded of just how lucky I am to live in the Bay Area. There is an endless supply of excellent restaurants and easy, cheap access to delicious fresh produce at the countless farmer's markets, grocers, and ethnic shops that fill every neighborhood in the city. Likewise, our music scene is full of history, diversity and is teeming with talent. Musical Pairings was conceived as a way to connect food with music, the way a sommelier would pair wine with a meal. Similarly, the "Local Pairings" portion of eating/SF began as a way to highlight some of eating/SF's best [...]

This week Kasey and I are doing something a little different. Together with Foodzie and one of their awesome local San Francisco producers, Neo Cocoa , we're doing a little giveaway . Who or what is Foodzie? To quote Kasey, "Foodzie is a pretty awesome company--they help local producers sell their goods on the Web and introduce folks to products that they otherwise might never have heard of, or had access to. If you check out Foodzie's site , you'll probably end up ogling over an array of goodies: chocolate-enrobed candied lemon [...]

As you may have noticed, Kasey usually posts her restaurant reviews on Fridays, and her recipes on Mondays and Wednesdays. Because you can't choose what you listen to at a restaurant, we decided that the "Musical Pairings" concept wasn't appropriate for the Friday restaurant reviews. However, starting today, I will be including "local pairings" with restaurant reviews featuring a band that originates in the same city or geographic area as the restaurant Kasey reviews. For our first "local pairing" I chose San Francisco's Cousin Chris . Cousin Chris' [...]
Well, the day is finally upon us ... or will be tomorrow Nov. 25 (Ed note: I'm an idiot) . Guns 'N Roses Chinese Democracy goes on sale at midnight in a month or so, but the band has posted the first single "Chinese Democracy" off the long-awaited album on its iMeem page . And, as you can guess – and as we theorized earlier – the song sucks. Well, not so much that it sucks, but that it's totally generic and boring. As Cousin [...]
