Here is Vampire Weekend making their second appearance on SNL over the weekend giving us a performance of "Giving Up The Gun" and "Cousins". Although I think I am with most people in thinking the new material isn't quite as good as the first record, they do seem to have gained some more chops live and I think this performance worked better than the first one. "Giving Up The Gun" is above and "Cousins" is below. Related posts: Vampire Weekend - "Cousins" Video [...]

Vampire Weekend were the musical guest on Saturday Night Live yesterday (March 6). The band played tracks "Cousins" and "Giving Up The Gun", both off their latest album, 'Contra'. Watch the band performing both tracks below. Vampire Weekend "Cousins" "Giving Up The Gun"

On Monday WTGR favourites Mumford & Sons stopped by BBC Radio 1 to play both their new single The Cave and a rather brilliant version of Vampire Weekend 's Cousins for the ever wonderful Sara Cox . Sticking to form, it starts off rather slowly before kicking into overdrive upon the age-old command of an enthusiastic "1,2,3,4!!". The band were on fine form, and the extended interview and both performances can also be heard here . This is already the second time The [...]

Vampire Weekend plays NYC! (Again!) And yes, we're still excited!

OK, folks, we've got the leader in the clubhouse for Album of the Year for 2010. I know it's only January, but I have a feeling someone is really going to have to step up their game to knock Vampire Weekend's Contra off its perch.
I'll have a review up later - one that features press your luck, break dancing robots and Frank Zappa - but for now I want to get a contest up and running. Sunday night, Gus's Pub will play host to two terrific local bands - Cousins ( number 16 on our Best-of Canadian LPs list ) and The Establishment - will be sharing the stage with "legendary" French rockers, Force Fields . Force Fields - from what I've heard - offer up a solid slate on instrumental rockers, heavy on tempo changes and transitions. If you read [...]

Vampire Weekend, in all of their collared shirt glory, graced an enthusiastic LA crowd last night with what was billed as an "intimate performance" to celebrate the release of their fantastic new sophomore release Contra . Witnessing a band meeting or even exceeding the hype that has surrounded them since their songs burst onto the band weasel blogs in '07 is an infinitely gratifying experience. Behold!- a band that does exactly what it wants from the get-go, crafting a sound and look completely distinct amongst their alt rock peers. There has been a lot of chatter, [...]

When Vampire Weekend first came on the national scene, many critics starting calling them "afro-inspired pop" and "ivy-indie". Sure, song titles like "Bryn", "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa" and "Walcott" attested to the initial point, however, songs like "M793 (which is about the m79 Crosstown bus traveling on 79th st.) and the anti-child labour anthem, "The Kids Don't Stand a Chance", are not quite afro-pop-ivy (or whatever category you wish to put them into). With Contra, fans are really getting a mature Vampire Weekend. The "afro-ivy-pop-indie" still lingers in "Diplomat's Son" or "California English", which sounds like a skipping [...]

Initial impressions of Vampire Weekend's sound would hardly place them in New York City, where the band originally formed. Lead singer Ezra Koenig and drummer Chris Tomson first joined forces on the comedy rap band L'Homme Run , before creating Vampire Weekend with Chris Baio and Rostam Batmanglij. The influence of African popular music - including Ladysmith, Black Mambazo, and Kanda Bongo Man - can certainly be heard in "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa" and "Diplomat's Son"; Koenig has also collaborated with Malawian singer Esau Mwamwaya on the title track of The Very Best's Warm Heart of Africa . Vampire Weekend gets Unplugged and intimate for MTV.
An album that you hate to love and love to hate

There's something appealing about Cousins, a new quartet from Halifax, Nova Scotia, but it takes patience to discover that appeal. After listening to several cuts from their debut album, I was disappointed with the lack of hooks, waiting for something to GRAB me. The band was unknowingly at the top of a digital pile of 100's of songs I had to sift through, and I was impatient. But then, I finally realized: They're not in a hurry to get from start to finish. Cousins is content to lazily but skillfully make their musical points, and I'm content to [...]

Two GSL writers go head to head and review the new Vampire Weekend.

Vampire Weekend - Contra On paper it just shouldn't work. Four graduates from Columbia University record a lo-fi indie record that is heavily influenced by both the rhythms and sounds of African music and the fuzzy rawness of The Strokes . However, upon the release of 2008's self-titled debut it quickly became apparent that it not only worked, but it turned out to be the formula of one of the most intriguing debut albums in recent years. With their Ralph Lauren shirts, freshly ironed chinos and pastel cardigans, Vampire Weekend [...]
