Combining bright, melodic vocal harmonies and traditional folk elements, Cowboy and Indian create a distinctive yet familiar sound that can easily resonate within the roots music fan. One may think that a trio of songwriters might be too overwhelming, lacking cohesiveness to their songs, yet their voices complement each other so well that this end up adding to their dynamic composition, setting them apart from other folk artists. The band just shotd a music video to "Hurt My Pride" (check it out here ) and is set to release their first full-length album this spring. Cowboy and [...]

The rootsy trio began when Jazz Mills (T-Bird and the Breaks) got together with Jesse Plemons to write their first song. The collaboration took off and before long the pair was drawing major buzz at SXSW. Daniel James (frontman of SF based "Leopold and His Fiction") soon joined the band to complete the trio. "We came together out of nowhere and were immediately inspired by one another," Mills said. The band put that inspiration to work by recording their first song, "Hurt My Pride." With James in San Francisco and Mills and Plemons in Austin, the bulk of [...]
It's been a long wait for new music from SF rock band Leopold and his Fiction , as news about the band's recording sessions with Thom Monahan faded away and bandleader Daniel James became understandably occupied with Cowboy and Indian . "Ride" is a new single from the Leopold camp, and it's an equally gorgeous visual and song. It's on the mellow side of the band's sound, so it doesn't capture the trio at its most rocking, but it's a strong tease that makes us hungry for more. Related Posts: [...]

And cue the collective sigh of relief (or remorse, depending): festival season is over. Basically. With the triumphant conclusion of Arcade Fire on Friday night, the 2011 installments of the "Big Four" are officially kaput. There are a few minor festivals here and there left for fall and winter to tide us over until next April in Indio, but by and large we've seen what 2011 had to offer. We don't want to get too sentimental or take the spotlight away from Austin City Limits , but it was a hell of a year, folks. From Dave Grohl and [...]

Austin, Texas-based band Cowboy and Indian has only released one single. But it's a damn good one. The band, which features alternating vocals from Jesse Plemons, Jazz Mills and Daniel James, is one excellent alt-country, bluegrass, harmonica-filled folk outfit. Mills balances out the two fellas' voices, but overall, the combinations of one, two or all three voices sounds fantastic. If Plemons, who is the lead singer on Troubled Tracks, looks familiar, that's because he's none other than Friday Night Lights' Landry Clarke. The show ended its final season this past summer, and clearly Plemons has been putting his [...]

Cowboy And Indian have slowly but surely been building up some positive press and appreciation for the jaunty country swing of Ledbellies , which we posted a while back. A Stereogum video premiere followed for the slow, mournful folk harmonies of Troubled Tracks and if you've not come across it yet, you're missing a real treat. Watch the video if you've not seen it and download below. Download Cowboy And Indian - Troubled Tracks mp3 Download Cowboy And Indian – Ledbellies (Hurt My Pride) mp3 [...]
If Cowboy and Indian 's last video was pretty goofy , the clip for "Troubled Tracks" is a more serious affair, a visually appealing compliment to the song's spare beauty. The trio consists of musician/actor Jesse Plemons, Jazz Mills and Daniel James of SF rock band Leopold and His Fiction , and you can find out more about the band in our interview with James earlier this year. Cowboy and Indian - "Ledbellies (Hurt My Pride)"
Another band I stumbled upon prior to the NXNE festival was Austin trio, Cowboy and Indian , who just got the Stereogum bump on their new video for "Troubled Tracks." This is roots-based Americana that lacks that forced quality that's pretty typical of these types of outfits. Pair up this video track with the first track I heard from the band, "Ledbellies," and you've got a pretty good folk-rock soundtrack for the daily grind this week. The band is made up of Jazz Mills (T-bird and the Breaks), Jesse Plemons (Actor [...]
You may know Jesse Plemons better as Landry Clarke from the dearly departed television masterpiece Friday Night Lights . (And if you don't know Landry, please take the next 54.45 hours to marathon all 5 seasons of FNL directly into your brain and your HEART to understand why everyone always tells you to do that. It's great!) In addition to being the Dillon Panthers' very own Rudy, fictional Texan sweetheart Landry fronted the fictional "metal" trio Crucifictorious. So now meet Cowboy And Indian, the real life band of the real life Jesse Plemons. Also a trio, Jesse [...]

So, here's the deal. A few days ago I was informed that my squad will be leaving the relief effort on the 22nd (This upcoming Wednesday). This is good for you because: A) The Indie Sabbath will be back in full force sooner than planned, bringing you that same material that has been described as "Cooler than a polar bear's toe nail" and "So fresh it'll turn your chest into a pair of class cutters." B) [There is no B. Actually there are practically no Bees anymore either . [...]

I'll be leaving in approximately three hours from Cleveland, weaving my way through the northern scenic regions of Pennsylvania until I finally hit the brakes in Buffalo. After a bout with a basket of chicken wings, the lady and I are headed into the land of Ice Hockey and Rush. We're having a layover in Niagara. I hear them falls are romantic. In any event, by my calculations, this is at least a good 7-8 hours worth of road-trippin' over the next 24 hours. I can't be the only one hitting the open road today/tomorrow with [...]

Michelle Ford Another year, another NXNE , another NXNE preview post. I'll apologize in advance if this one's a little less thorough or exploratory than previews past, as travels and general business has taken up time that would usually be spent cruising band websites and Myspaces Facebooks, Bandcamps and Soundclouds. But I can offer one unconditional endorsement for the coming week, and I'd like to think it's not a wholly obvious one: Vancouver's Louise Burns . Her debut Mellow Drama came out a couple [...]

Cowboy And Indian are a fresh-smellin' folky foursome out of Austin who sound like the The Carter Family channeled through Buddy Holly's Crickets, one helluva combination, especially if your revival meeting is in dire need of revivin'. The quartet recently had a song featured on a episode of Parenthood , something we refuse to hold against them, and is currently working on what will become their debut record. In the meantime, we'll take whatever scraps they're offering, such as the Ledbellies , which'll sure a shit set your foot a'stompin'. And if you're [...]

Last night a little after midnight, Austin City Limits, or ACL as the kids call it, dropped their 10th anniversary lineup for this year's festival. No real surprises as the major headliners were either already announced or revealed by the scratch off tickets, but still you have got Kanye and Arcade Fire in here as well as music legend Stevie Wonder, not a bad little lineup. There are also a ton of great mid-level bands in here, so check out the full lineup below. As of right now, all 3-day passes for this festival are sold out, [...]
