One Timers are quick hits to keep your ears fresh throughout the day. Get down with these tracks, sans a bunch of words clogging up your brain. Wonder what a real one timer is? Watch this . Hint: he scores! - I've probably listened to this track something like ten to fifteen times bare minimum since the end of March. It has a great laid back groove and I remember originally thinking, "The fuzzed out vocals are a nice touch on top of this sound." Cowboy Indian [...]

Much of the Kansas City music community is rightfully engaged in self-congratulatory praise inspired by the notably strong showing of new releases in 2013. A comment made by Matt of Jeopardy of Contentment at this site last week compelled me to join the chorus. Here's a list of my twenty favorite Kansas City-related new releases of the past four months. I created a Spotify playlist that includes all but five of my selections. 1. Mark Lowrey- Tangos For 18th Street ( review at Plastic Sax) 2. [...]

This week, David Bowie demonstrated his 'work flow diagrams', we learned that Flying Lotus will feature new music in the Jay-Z produced film An Oversimplification Of Her Beauty, Wolfmother will now be referred to as the frontman's moniker Andrew Stockdale, and James Murphy doth protests too much as he told us again that an LCD Soundsystem reunion "isn't happening." But get excited, as we give you a few of our favorite things from the week in no particular order. Durh...

Cherokee Rock Rifle enjoys an enviable status among the cool kids in Kansas City. In addition to being a good guy, vocalist Dutch Humphrey works as a bartender at one of the town's most fashionable music venues. His band, consequently, is a compulsory member of the in-crowd. That sort of reasoning has never swayed me. I regularly rip the music made by my friends and associates. I'm a jerk that way. Thankfully, I love Ta-Li , Cherokee Rock Rifle's new six-song EP, on its own merits. It [...]

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars A four piece from Lawrence, Kansas, Cowboy Indian Bear have already put themselves and their music up for your purveyance. Back in 2010, they released Each Other All the Time , which gained them some fans through their faster folksy songs. Three years, and some supposed grueling touring and extravagant production later, they’re back with a sophomore effort that’s supposed to reflect these experiences. The result is Live Old, Die Young , whose title even sheds a [...]

We hope you had a successful and fruitful Record Store Day this past Saturday and that you've added many cherished discs to your vinyl collection. This growing movement has been a needed boon for ailing record stores as much as it's been a treasure trove for music fans worldwide. We'd love to hear what your highlights of the day were, but we're also eager to remind you that Record Store Day isn't meant to be merely one three-hundred-sixty-fifth of the year. Record Store Day should be any day or every day, and each Tuesday of the week, there are more [...]

A sure way to my heart is to throw in some gang vocals. I don't really care if they're harmonized, angrily shouted or whatnot, I just want group vocals! This beautiful track from Cowboy Indian Bear features just that, so I had to share it with you. This isn't an in-your-face group approach, but rather a relaxed gang vocal, accentuated by careful percussion and light instrumentation; it's clear, at least on this tune, that the vocals are the winner...the song's not shabby either. The band will be releasing their new record, [...]

Introduced here last month, Cowboy Indian Bear presents us the following single from their forthcoming album Live Old, Die Young , which will be released next Tuesday, April 23 rd via The Record Machine. And today we are pleased to premiere the track “Let It Down” , which brings a smooth and gentle layered indie pop with choir-ish vocals. Constantly repeating “let it down” in the song chorus (pointed in the lyrics as a [...]

Welp, spring break is pretty much over. But no need putting on the sad ninja pants. It only means we are that much closer to warmer days, skimpy clothing, songs about summer love, BBQs, beach parties and plenty of indie dojos to make all those things 1000 times better.
This weekend I'm heading to Kansas City for the first time to catch Middle of the Map Fest and couldn't be more excited. Aside from seeing great acts like Grizzly Bear and Iceage , I'm really stoked to see young outfit Cowboy Indian Bear for the first time. You might remember them from a track I highlighted in January , if not then it's time to familiarize yourself. I've been spinning their debut LP all morning long and it's a solid gem, with a lot of texture, depth, and melodies. They're [...]

Bands get their names from different sources and these days randomness seems to reign when choosing one. It’s common to not even ask yourself any more where a band’s name comes from, and sometimes funny lists do the job of ranking the most bizarre . Well, I wouldn't say that Cowboy Indian Bear should be on one of those lists, but at first glance it did make me think "why this triad?" All was forgotten after the first few seconds of listening to “Does Anybody See You Out?”, with its steady bass line followed [...]
New LP, Live Old, Die Young will be out April 23rd on The Record Machine, a Kansas City label also responsible for assembling the Middle of the Map Festival.
Detox from a long weekend with the download of Cowboy Indian Bear's "Does Anybody See You Out?" - an authentic jam, full of sweeping organic movements. Being a Kentuckian, I have a genetic predisposition that forces me to dislike everything from Lawerence, Kansas but hey - I'm not gonna deny Cowboy Indian Bear their chance at my ears. With vocals that remind me of a more emotive Wilco and instrumentation that's like Grizzly Bear hopped up on an Americana binge recording with distorted guitar amps inside of a wheat silo, they've got a [...]
In 2010, Cowboy Indian Bear released a very underrated album titled, Each Other All the Time . The melodies were simple, but crisp percussion and beautiful harmonies kept the tracks energetic and exciting. "Does Anybody See You Out?" picks up where they left off providing yeasayer-like vocals and drums reminiscent of The Rural Alberta Advantage. It's a track that deserves attention from a band the deserves even more. [...]

And so to the third instalment of our Round Up posts , catching up with our overflowing in-box, our favourite blogs and the internet at large. Today another 13 tracks to tickle your fancy. First up is another track from the brilliant Australian Tom Morgan and his forthcoming album Orange Syringe which is due on Fire Records on 4th February. This is the wonderfully stripped back and laconic One True Love . a Sunshine do have an illuminating quality, [...]

Everybody's Got One , the new six-song EP by Bentcousin , is a mess. And I love it. The bum notes and questionable production values make the British duo's ramshackle project all the more charming. On the opening track "Bentpaperboy," Amelia Innit gently croons lines like "I never met a Catholic that I didn't like." The ingratiating acoustic piece recalls the dry wit of Belle and Sebastian. Amelia's twin brother Pat admires a girl named "Susan" and "my favorite LP" on the chaotic rocker "Slade." "I Quit You" is a [...]

It's been what seems like an extremely long time - almost three years - since Each Other All the Time , the debut album from Lawrence's Cowboy Indian Bear . The quartet's new record, Live Old, Die Young , will be released this spring, and yesterday the band released a single from it, "Does Anybody See You Out?"… [ Read more ] [ Subscribe to the comments on this story [...]
