Piramida , the new album by Danish five-piece Efterklang, is out this week. The album continues Efterklang's march away from the experimental weirdness of their early recordings toward a more conventional sound, and it's also a pretty somber-sounding piece of work — perhaps because it's based on field recordings that the band took in a crazy-looking abandoned mining town in the Arctic Circle. Indeed, the backstory to Piramida is pretty fascinating, and it got us thinking about albums that were recorded in similarly exotic locales. We've put together a selection, and as ever, we're open to suggestions. [...]

Let's talk about the three Ds: dying, dead and death. (Ooh, let the fun and games begin, right?) I have such a complicated relationship with them. If we're talking dead, as in not being alive, as opposed to death, the moment when life ends, I'm good. I figure that being dead must be a lot like sleeping. As long as I don't see it coming, there's nothing to fear but fear itself -- and a corpse that isn't discovered until days, or weeks, later. Which brings us to the moments before when life ends, [...]
Trailer parks have a bad rap, no doubt about it. But there's no use denying their pervasiveness in American culture. These semi-permanent structures are cheap and easy enough to transport. It was on th

I don't know what it is with women, the art of melancholy and me. No cinematic thrill moves me quite like a melodrama starring an actress in the throes of despair (see Why I Love the '90s, Part 2 ). In music, too, I love my girls good and miserable. There's something about a forlorn female voice rocking me to tears over sobering musical accompaniment. It's another reason why I loved the '90s: It was the era of female singers, many of them fronting bands, who could cut right to my soul with a frown and [...]

Next week, Neil Young and Crazy Horse will issue Americana , their first album in nine years, comprised entirely of reworked classic, American folk songs. In celebration of its release, Consequence of Sound decided to turn the tables and put together a list of our favorite covers of Young's exhausting back catalogue. There are plenty - hundreds of them - and they stretch back to as far as the '60s and '70s. Because we couldn't include them all, the list has been cut to a healthy collection of 25 solid inclusions. Something [...]

Trying to determine "the best" album of the year is always going to be an exercise in subjectivity, and well it should be. You can assign points for technical proficiency, and set all kinds of arbitrary criteria as if this was a figure skating competition, but even at the Olympics, they're looking at artistic impression. In my year-end columns, I always stress that I'm very uncomfortable saying my choices are "the best" records of the year, deferring to the old stand-by "favourite albums" tag to define my choices. Being a Polaris Music Prize [...]
So how many versions of this song (played at the Etihad Stadium before every home game) do you know...? » Supra - Blue Moon (Man City Version) Probably far less than you thought. Below are a good number I've collected and this is still the tip of the iceberg. There are still more out there. Before we begin though, one more Man City version - this to celebrate the FA Cup win [...]

Toronto-based Americana group Cowboy Junkies released its 17th album, The Wilderness , at the end of March. That record, the last effort in collection titled The Nomad Series, concluded an impressive run of writing and recording four full-length albums over the span of 18 months. Now, the quartet has released a new video for “Unanswered Letter,” the lead track off The Wilderness. Cowboy Junkies - Angels in the Wilderness

I t was nothing if not ambitious. Approaching their 25th anniversary as a band, Cowboy Junkies decided that they would mark the occasion by releasing four new records over an 18-month period. This wasn't music that was already "in the can" as they say, but material yet to be written in some cases, let alone committed to tape. They would call it The Nomad Series , an appropriate choice for the band, given that during their quarter century of music, they have rarely stayed in one place (musically speaking) for long, preferring to [...]

Here we go, the last Monday in March, which means, thankfully, that we can soon tear one more month of the calendar and be just that much closer to summer vacation. I, for one, can't have summer get here soon enough. Anyways, as per usual, your Melancholy Monday playlist, just like your ma used to make it: with love and the utmost care. 1.
