1996 was an eventful year for The Duke. I survived my first year of college. I met the woman who would become my wife. And I saw The Cowboy Junkies live in Minneapolis. Before the show started, I walked up to Gary Louris – guitarist for The Jayhawks – and told him how awesome I thought he was (embarrassing moment). The opening act for the Junkies was Vic Chestnut. I had never heard of him nor heard his music before that night. And now, so many years later, I wish I would have paid more attention to his songs. [...]
PopMatters chats with Michael Timmins about Cowboy Junkies' new record of Vic Chesnutt covers, their wildly ambitious Nomads project, and the inspiration he finds in covering other people's songs. When troubadour singer songwriter Vic Chesnutt died last Christmas, the world was robbed of a true original. A paraplegic with limited vocal and guitar skills, and a songwriter whose understanding of the politics of intimacy was matched only by his mordant sense of humour, Chesnutt was by no means everyone's favourite artist. But, he was always, and unmistakably, an artist. Which is why his songs do not, at [...]

A review of the Cowboy Junkies new album, Demons, a collection of song written by the late Vic Chesnutt
Legendary Canadian alt-rock country and folk band Cowboy Junkies released a new album of covers, 'Demons', last month in America. It's a tribute to the band's late, dear friend Vic Chesnutt, who tragically ended his life on Christmas Day 2009. But out of tragedy comes some of the most beautiful music. The Cowboy Junkies are offering up their version of 'Flirted With You All My Life', a song about love and regret. We all make choices in this life. Maybe today you'll be making an important one or two [...]
DOWNLOAD : Cowboy Junkies - Live at Koerner Hall, Toronto 11-19-10 Note: There was a guy sitting next to me at City Winery who said he was taping the show for Archive.Org but it doesn't appear he has posted it yet. As such, this is the latest date posted and the set list for this show isn't too radically different from the City Winery show. Cowboy Junkies spent most of last week in NYC, playing two sold-out shows at City Winery, making an appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon [...]
Songs of loss leads to acceptance and moving on...
and last PM the COWBOY JUNKIES took to the JIMMY FALLON to perform twice. wotyougot

Last year, on the occasion of their 25th anniversary as a band, I called Cowboy Junkies a "national treasure", marking their lengthy career path by constantly evolving and moving forward as a band. I've racked my brain trying to come up with another band or artist that I listened to in 1989 that I still care about and follow; other than a fading interest in what Morrissey is doing with his life, I can't think of one. One of the staples of both the Cowboy Junkies' live shows and recordings has been [...]

Our friend and fellow music fan, Matt from Addicted to Vinyl brought a great charity project to our attention last week, and we wanted to help spread the word by bringing it to your attention as well. Joey’s Song: Volume One and Joey’s Song for Kids: Volume One are two compilations that father/activist and founder of the Joseph Gomoll Foundation, Michael Gomoll, released last week to raise awareness and money for the Epilepsy Foundation. Michael lost his son, Joey, last year, just shy of his 5th birthday. Joey’s Story: In [...]
A masterful exposition of a gifted storyteller and, at its essence, a riveting Cowboy Junkies album.

Cowboy Junkies ' upcoming record is called Demons and it's a tribute to the late Vic Chesnutt . It contains eleven cover songs including this one, "Wrong Piano." It's a classic country rocker, laden with fuzzed-out guitar leads and whirling organ. Equal parts joy and regret, it's a fitting tribute to a friend. Go to Exclaim! to read my list of the top ten most anticipated Canadian albums of the year. Demons comes in at number nine. Chesnutt's original version appears on the [...]

Cowboy Junkies : Dreaming My Dreams With You [ purchase ] Waylon Jennings : Dreaming My Dreams With You [ purchase ] I am the last person you'd ever want to ask about country music. I have a superficial grasp of it, at best, and I've been eager to dismiss [...]

It's been nearly a year since the much-beloved singer-songwriter Vic Chesnutt tragically took his own life. Now the band Cowboy Junkies is remembering the late artist with a new tribute album of his songs. It's called Demons

The follow up to 2010’s Remnin Park , forthcoming Cowboy Junkies album Demons will be released on February 12 via Proper Records. A tribute to the late, great Vic Chesnutt, this record will be the second in a series of four planned collections set to explore the Georgian’s rich and much overlooked back catalogue. Approaching Chesnutt’s music with their own Northern spin, Cowboy Junkies’ offerings, like the below ‘Wrong Piano’, are compelling, inventive and steeped in an emotionally charged tradition.
