Toronto's own Cowboy Junkies have announced the release of the second entry in their Nomad Series. The new album, Demons, will hit stores on February 15th. The really exciting part of the new album is that it is nothing but covers of songs by the late great Vic Chesnutt. Check out "Wrong Piano" now. Here's the track list for the record: Wrong Piano Flirted With You All My Life See You Around
As the second of four releases in their current "Nomad Series", Cowboy Junkies ' new January 18 Demons follows up this past year's excellent Remnin Park with this tribute to their late friend, tour mate and musical compatriot Vic Chestnutt. Originally the plan was for the band to back up Chestnutt on a new project, says Junkies founder Michael Timmins, a strategy that was first discussed when Chestnutt guested on the band's 20th anniversary reworking of their classic Trinity album in 2008. Following the death of the the Athens, GA songwriter in 2009, [...]

While we are waiting for the new Daphné-album, the new Keren Ann cd, the new Marina Celeste album, the official release of Marianne Dissard's album (that you can buy straight from the source as well) probably new music by Coeur de Pirate and hopefully new stuff by Valerie Leulliot, Rose, Carmen Maria Vega, Carine Erseng and Camille, we're entering the new year with some new names. Minimal is a Vive La Fête-styled duo that make electropop like a four-year-old makes a drawing: messy but fun. They do two covers, of AC/DC and Pizzicatto Five, but I'm posting their [...]

While piecing together my Best of 2010 post this afternoon, I had occasion to revisit Cowboy Junkies outstanding Renmin Park (don't worry, it's still outstanding, though I'm having a difficult time ranking it) when an email arrived bearing Wrong Piano , the lead single from their next release, Demons . If you'll recall, while working on Renmin Park , the band basically mapped out their next three releases, labeling the impending four volume stretch, The Nomad Series. [...]

The memorial service will then be held at Carnegie Deli down the street at 9 p.m. According to Prefix Magazine , the list of performers includes Patti Smith, The Roots, DeVotchKa, J. The Cowboy Junkies combine their distinctive sound with elements of Chinese pop music and culture on Renmin Park.

There is a darkness about the Cowboy Junkies that has presided over their song writing since their early beginnings 15 years ago. Their latest effort, Renmin Park, certainly continues this tradition. However, the band deviates slightly from their formula as they flirt with sinister bass lines layered over urban city loops and infectious rhythms. File it under alt-country folk with a side of trip hop. Renmin Park is volume 1 of 4 in The Nomad Series of which the remaining 3 are scheduled to be released over the [...]

On July 20 and 21 of 1991, Phish played a two-day stand at Arrowhead Ranch in Parksville, NY , which was part of a short tour where the band was joined by the Giant Country Horns for the first time on the road. Next Wednesday night, Phab Phour tribute act Strange Design will take the stage at HT's favorite NYC venue Brooklyn Bowl to recreate one of the two shows - which will remain a surprise until showtime. The [...]

Forget what you thought you knew about Cowboy Junkies . This is closer to the vibe they threw down on their first album Whites Off Earth Now . Dig it:: ( mp3 )

If I had to pick one song to listen to for the rest of my life it would probably be "Sweet Jane". While nobody does it like Lou, The Cowboy Junkies do take a nice spin on the original rock epic. Hazy vocals and raw guitar tones add an uber-sexual element that will make you swear you are walking through some sort of drug-induced haze. Enjoy it below... Cowboy Junkies - Sweet Jane

Since March, Michael Timmins, principle songwriter and guitarist for Cowboy Junkies , has been writing blog entries that discuss the inspiration behind each of the songs on the band's latest album, Renmin Park , on the band's website . (He's written about a third of the tracks thus far.) The majority of the album, which can be streamed on the Cowboy Junkies' website, was inspired by a three-month long trip Timmins and his family took to China, the birth country of Timmins' two adopted daughters, in 2008. As he describes it on the blog, the album [...]
