Fra i suoi dischi solisti abbiamo apprezzato The Space Between Us (1998) e As If to Nothing (2002). This blog has been up and running for just over 2 years now and i just realised that i've never actually done a proper Valentines Day post. So here is one in the form of a Monday List. Valentines Day divides a lot of people. Some love it and celebrate it to the full with presents, dinner dates, "quiet" nights at hotels, cards, flowers and the general showering of love on their partner. Then there are those who hate (lets be honest it's usually single people) Valentines Day [...]

Earlier today we told you about a pair of upcoming releases by Tom Zé due out shortly on David Byrne 's Luaka Bop imprint. Seems like good ol' Dave also has nine tracks — including seven he produced with famed producer Brian Eno — on the soundtrack of Oliver Stone's upcoming Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps . The soundtrack also boasts a track from Talking Heads (This Must Be The Place (Naïve Melody)), as well as two contributions from contemporary composer extraordinaire Craig Armstrong ( Love Actually , [...]

I've been trying to write a review of Rudi Zygadlo's amazing debut album Great Western Laymen for the past couple weeks but have been struggling with how to describe this opus. It's an immaculately produced vision, endlessly inventive with composition and sound design and tinged with more than a little humor. Beyond these words I am not sure how to talk about something that sounds like everything and nothing you've ever heard before. The festivities start up with "Manuscripts Don't Burn," a slinky number that introduces many of the Zygadlo hallmarks: a [...]

Let's face it; actually, you either love it or hate it. Funny, tear-jerking, uplifting, and the perfect feel-good film for Christmas, or as lifted from the Monty Python sketch about Oscar Wilde, a stream of bat's piss in the night. Written and directed by Richard Curtis, Love Actually is a good old British rom-com, played out during the run up to Christmas. Curtis is best known for his biggest hit films, Four Weddings And A Funeral and Notting Hill , though Brits will equally recognize him by [...]

fidgeted (was jonesing for post talk amuse-bouche...) through eleanor yule's lecture last night on scots miserabilism: since the 1970's, scottish filmmakers have garnered a reputation for producing 'miserablist' films. marked out by their tragic tone, they depict the lives of violent and addicted anti-heroes set against the backdrop of urban squalor. using illustrative film clips, writer and filmmaker eleanor yule takes an insider's look at this dominating genre. she explores its effects and asks if it's time to move away from an image of scotland that casts it as the 'poor relative'. the chat's [...]

This has been so long overdue it's not even funny. This mixtape was probably made a few months ago with a few tweaks here and there...and I wanted to make more changes as every week brings new music and would work so well in this mixtape but alas, no more procrastination! <Clear the Runway> is pretty awesome. Not gonna lie. It has a some songs from my previous mixtape but no worries, it remains Awesome. Perfect for the weekend. Body movin' body movin' we be gettin' down and you know we're crush groovin'. Download: Mixtape [...]
Well folks, a quick perusal of my mental meanderings rendered in written word on these pages will reveal that I am, more or less, one of a large legion of (mostly) functionally literate blogging indie rockers. Half the world is writing about many of the bands I'm mentioning on this website. I am fine with that. I make no claims to originality. Noel Murray, one of my favourite writers on AV Club , had this to say about his 'angle' on music writing: "My angle? My angle is that I'll be [...]

A quick blog for my chum Steve at Domino Rally who is off to New York soon, making me insanely jealous in the process. As a coping mechanism I decided I could do worse than posting a couple of my favourite New York Songs.. Lloyd Cole - New York City Sunshine One from his last album and probably up there with the best of anything he's written post Commotions. There are a couple of obligatory Cole-isms, cheesy lines about junkies and being "turned on" but the sentiment is pure - [...]
It's New York Week next week on the History Channel. That means when you decide to take a break from your relentless rock and roll lifestyle, you'll have something better to watch than Cash Cab (lovin it like I do) as you sink into your couch. Since I am feeling fond of all things New York-related lately , I am going to TiVo this action (it starts November 19th). There's a big contest going on over at their website where you can get whisked off for a 4 day history-themed tour [...]

Another late night mix, best to be listened to alone in a dark, void room filled with a stark silence. Five downbeat, meditative instrumental piano pieces. The first two is lingering, airy ambient. German-born composer Max Richter mixed piano and string arrangements to make a piece that deserves to be a movie score, and Craig Armstrong provides one that's already in a critically-acclaimed movie. To end the list is the Grammy-winning instrumental track from songstress Sarah McLachlan's landmark album in 1997. Enjoy. Eluvium - Prelude For Time Feelers (Copia, 2007) [...]
