Chris Cornell proves he's more than talented enough to carry an entire set with just him and a guitar.

As a current/former member of The Dead Science, Xiu Xiu, and Parenthetical Girls, Sam Mickens has been making music for years. Next week he'll start a new leg of his career with the release of his debut album, Slay & Slake and while the album's under his name, he'll hardly be going it alone. Slay & Slake is a concept album, with Mickens using the heartache of Love's Forever Changes and the social injustice of Marvin Gaye's What's Going On as inspiration. With Mickens [...]

ALBUM REVIEW: So if you're a ex-metal head what do you do after lighting strikes you and you are enlightened? One thing is you make a record called we are night sky and you call the band deadboy & the Elephantmen . The main dude Dax Riggs (what rock minikor) was in the slowcore metal band Acid Bath and the rock anthem group Agents of Oblivion before deadboy came together. However, the metamorphosis happened we don't care because this is a great heaven and hell themed record that marks [...]
The ever-prolific Craig Wedren is back to make MAGNET his second mix tape in honor of solo album Wand, which just came out on Nerveland Recordings. Never one to stay idle, Wedren created the record while in the midst of writing the score for the new David Wain/Judd Apatow film Wanderlust and the third season of [...]

To launch his new solo LP WAND , Shudder to Think frontman Craig Wedren recruited famous funnymen like Paul Rudd , Michael Ian Black , and Joe Lo Truglio to serve as Youtube pitchmen. To promote the album live, Wedren will join forces with another legendary rock vocalist, Soundgarden's Chris Cornell. Between November 1st and December 17th, Wedren will hold down the opening slot on the latest leg of Cornell's Songbook tour. Check out the complete itinerary below, which includes a special performance at Carnegie Hall in New York just [...]

Craig Wedren is a man that wears many hats. Along with fronting the massively influential DC band Shudder To Think, composing for shows like MTV's much loved 90s show The State, Reno 911!, Stella, The Whitest Kids You Know, and Wet Hot American Summer, the musician also currently scores the TV show Hung on HBO. Who would think he would even have time to eat or sleep? But apparently he does... and then some. Wedren has just released his newest solo album, Wand , out now. He has also accompanied the album with [...]

It's a full-on revolution down at Occupy Wall Street right now; the contingent seems to be growing every day, with no sign that it will be relenting any time soon. People are pissed and enacting their democratic right, and there's a lot to be said about that. The movement's growing size has stoked a media phenomenon; now that a lot of people are reacting negatively to MTV's announcement of a True Life: I'm Occupying Wall Street special that airs 11/5 at 6PM EST, the movement seems to have hit fever pitch. [...]
Former Shudder to Think frontman Craig Wedren tells us about his uber-ambitious multi-media album project and we're surprised to also find out about his affinity for the "amoral but ultimately just" Willy Wonka... Craig Wedren hasn't had a great career at all -- he's actually had two. The first one stems back from his iconic post-hardcore outfit Shudder to Think, whose early-90s releases on Dischord Records helped define the anything-goes underground/alternative rock scene that was growing in the U.S., rewriting the rulebook well before grunge blew up and took everything with it. Their epic high point came with 1994's [...]

► He goes by Gotye , but this Aussie-by-way-of-Belgium's moniker should be "sold out" considering that's the status of so many of his shows on his "Making Mirrors" tour including tonight's show at the Satellite. Experimentally indie, oddly soulful, and great hair. [See Goyte's brilliant video "Somebody That I Used To Know" . ] After party action comes courtesy of Caught a Ghost and Lemon Sun . RSVP HERE for the $5 list for the after party. ► Elegant, precocious, and a little dynamic, St. Vincent graces the stage of the [...]

One of the best new releases of the week comes from a band that sent their music submission directly to us. It's the new album from The Walls, a popular rock band from Ireland. First formed in 1998 by brothers Steve and Joe Wall (previously members of the The Stunning) . This week they released [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe
1. Dum Dum Girls - "Coming Down" (The reverb-rich track sways like Mazzy Star, and is taken from their stellar second album, Only In Dreams out now on Sub Pop. The new album is more polished and a step forward with a full-band approach that really showcases Dee Dee's deft songwriting that was always hiding under all the lo-fi haze.) http://wearedumdumgirls.com/ Download: http://assets4.subpop.com/asse ts/audio/10068.mp3 2. Acclaimed singer-songwriter and film music composer Craig Wedren is a true renaissance man of music, having achieved success in a wide variety of musical styles and avenues. From 1986 to 1998 he fronted the genre-straddling Washington D.C. indie rock/post-hardcore band Shudder to Think, whose 1994 album Pony Express Record received widespread critical acclaim despite being the band's first release after finally signing to a major record label. "Wand" is a clear synthesis of all of Wedren's varied musical journeys and experiences up to this point. Get a preview of his album in the player below, it was [...]
Lots of interesting re-releases/best-ofs this week: The Jesus and Mary Chain , Anvil , The Stooges and Nirvana . Notice that I left out Pink Floyd . Don't worry, I'm prepared to get nuked in the comments. Worthwhile new stuff includes Mastodon , Rwake , Arthur Russell , Wilco and the CD release of The Mindeater from Bonnie "Prince" Billy and The Phantom Family Halo . (Note to Travis Lee: I am still planning to mail that to you. Sorry for [...]
Most of you may know that Craig Wedren was the lead singer of Shudder to Think, one of the seminal punk bands of the '80s and '90s. What you might not know is that he has also composed the theme songs and incidental music to countless TV shows and movies, including Reno 911 , The State , Wet Hot American Summer , Role Models …basically everything David Wain has touched. So, it makes sense that his new solo album, WAND , is basically the soundtrack to an accompanying movie of the same name [...]
Craig Wedren "I Know" There is a lot to recommend to Craig Wedren's voice, but I've always been fond of the way he can affect this sorta sexy-brat tone. A little bitchy, a little flirty, a little silly. "I Know," a cut from his new solo record, is a showcase for this quirk as he admits that "it's fun to treat you badly" over this heavy, stomping groove that reminds me a bit of Basement Jaxx's "Cish Cash." He sells the message just right – his voice conveys a bit of regret and shame for his [...]
