Samantha Crain's second album falls somewhere between Laura Veirs and The Be Good Tanyas. Though unlike those two, Crain is short on the all-important ingredient – being unique. It's a shame really, as the songs come close to catching a melody or delivering a hook – but never quite hit the mark. The personable side of the singer (each track is about an experience with somebody in her life) is obscured by the passing hints of rock that emanate from the drums and constant guitar riffs (some of which are terrible – check Holdin' that [...]
So many apologies for the lack of updates this week. Thursday night was trivia night and I drank way too much for my own good. According to my trivia teammates I was shouting at the end of the night for the remainder of whatever bottle we were being poured shots from all night. I guess [...]
I climb the stairs to the front porch and glance back to my car in the driveway. I press the doorbell slowly, and step back from the door. The porch is covered with children's toys and chalk, cigarette butts and a single gold beer cap. After a minute or so I step forward and I [...]

This is a can't miss. Saturday April 23 @ Founders Brewing . Chris Bathgate Samantha Crain Hezekiah Jones This is the album release show for Chris Bathgate's Salt Year - which is already garnering some well deserved attention . Graham Parsons of the Go Rounds is also scheduled to perform.

Offering up our year end list a couple of weeks ago just wasn't enough. So I put the call out to a group of individuals - you know, the gang - who make a different in the music scene here in Louisville, asking them to collect a "best of" or "year end" list in whatever format they choose. I discovered some releases that I totally slept on this year. Perhaps you will too. I also discovered some personality quirks in some of my friends I didn't know existed before. For example, Dom from Phantom Family Halo does not want to [...]
The only way to follow up a night in which you stumble into bed at 3:30 in the morning is to stumble into bed at 4:30 in the morning. It's been a long weekend, folks, and all the over-the-counter pseudoephedrine in the world couldn't keep me from crashing before my work-day ended. I was a busy bee, productive as all hell until about 90 minutes before my shift ended. Then I totally crashed and couldn't function any more. I was so anxious to get out and go home that I left without my computer. Good thing Nicci doesn't [...]

I didn't hear much of Crain until sometime after they had disbanded. My first exposure to the band was kind of odd, hearing their album Heater before anything else a few years ago. Their first album Speed had eluded me since it only had an original pressing of 1000 copies back when it was released in 1992. However, a couple years ago Temporary Residence really came through and put out a very fine CD reissue of the album. [...]
