Bleeding Edge: The Crash Kings Getting Ready for Album #2

Crash Kings - You Got Me
The Crash Kings are an L.A. rock/pop trio that made it official in 2006. Formed by brothers Tony Beliveau (vocals & keys) & Mike Beliveau (on bass), friend Jason Morris (drums) joins the brothers Beliveau to round out the threesome. After seeing the band play, producer Linda Perry (formerly of 4 Non Blondes) signed them to her Custard Records label and helped to get the band's first album rolling. Their sound is a Ben Folds/Jack White cross, or maybe a bit like Squeeze/Difford & Tillbrook. Crash Kings-Mountain Man.mp3 The [...]

The Duke Spirit put an exclamation point on 2010

The Duke Spirit put an exclamation point on 2010 By Seraphina Lotkhamnga The music of the Duke Spirit has always had a certain moxie — "The Step and the Walk," if you will, to name-check a song off the band's second album "Neptune." On Thursday night at the Roxy, the London quintet exuded a swagger befitting its tunes, barreling into West Hollywood to play an explosive set worthy of the Sunset Strip's rock star-laden past. From the moment singer Leila Moss and company strutted on to stage to catapult themselves into the brooding bass line of "The Step," [...]

Tonight in L.A.: The Duke Spirit, the Growlers

Top pre-New Year's Eve places to rock it tonight: ► London five-piece the Duke Spirit [previewed here], joined by L.A. trio Crash Kings and Orange County's Free Lions , visit the Roxy. Above, one of four sessions Liela Moss and crew did for Nic Harcourt's LiveBuzz [watch all of them here ]. ► The Growlers headline the Echo, with Grand Elegance and Gantez Warrior supporting. Not to mention: Terminal Twilight at the Satellite (f/k/a Spaceland); [...]

The Duke Spirit's Liela Moss on coconut moonshine, the fashion world and the new album, 'Bruiser'

The Duke Spirit's Liela Moss on coconut moonshine, the fashion world and the new album, 'Bruiser' The Duke Spirit's scorching soul-rock has always been good for a knockout punch (or three). But just because the London quintet's new album is titled "Bruiser," don't think it's a facsimile of their first two albums, "Cuts Across the Land" (2005) and "Neptune" (2008.) "Bruiser," recorded in L.A. with Andrew Scheps, is a more raw-boned affair, with frontwoman Liela Moss's icy-hot vocals skittering across brawny guitar-bass-drum lines. Moss and bandmates Toby Butler, Luke Ford, Olly Betts and Marc Sollis have been busy preparing for the release. They recently teased it with the "Kusama" EP, featuring "Everybody's Under [...]

Crash Kings "Non Believer"

Crash Kings "Non Believer" This month, alternative piano rock trio, Crash Kings dropped a video for their latest single, "Non Believer." Too Much Heat and Makeup: CoS at Epicenter '10

Too Much Heat and Makeup: CoS at Epicenter '10 epicenter: n: point on the Earth's surface that is directly above the focus, the point where an earthquake originates. It's about one o'clock in the afternoon on Saturday just outside of Los Angeles (Fontana, CA, to be exact). It's over 100 degrees, easily. Cars are backed up all along I-15 as the heat just bounces off their metal plates and onto our faces. We will stop for ice, water, and other cold things in the midst of everything, but not too far away, something wild is brewing. Epicenter Festival 2010 is [...]

Free Energy, Hot Chip, Deadmau5 tapped for Sims 3 soundtrack

Oh, The Sims . How you bring memories of hours upon hours of time lost on building homes and sending people to work. The Sims 3 , the latest version of the immensely popular and addicting computer game, is coming to consoles (Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii) this October 26th. If you've put a stereo in your Sims' home before, you'll have noticed vocal tracks scattered throughout the radio stations. In fact, in the latest few expansions, you might have actually recognized some of the songs, albeit translated into the fictional Simlish language. [...]

Bumbershoot Music and Arts Festival 2010: Day Two

Bumbershoot Music and Arts Festival 2010: Day Two It was another beautiful day at Seattle's Bumbershoot Festival, which was surprising considering the weather was supposed to be overcast for most of the weekend. This set the stage for some impressive performances by some of the best up and coming bands from the North West. I had some time to kill before my first act so I wandered over to the Flatstock showcase at the Center Building. If you ever wanted a concert poster by your favorite band by one of the best concert poster designers in the business, [...]

Seattle, I'm Listening: CoS at Bumbershoot '10

Seattle, I'm Listening: CoS at Bumbershoot '10 Even though I'm from Vancouver BC - a mere two-hour drive away - I'd never been to Seattle's famous Bumbershoot Music and Arts Festival before. With the Labor Day weekend institution reaching its 40th year though, I jumped at the chance to cover this eclectic city festival for Consequence of Sound . Yes, it was going to be a challenge - after all, I was covering (and photographing) the concert all by myself and with three full-days and almost 200 shows to choose from, I had my work cut out for me. Luckily, Bumbershoot ended [...]
