You people can't take "no" for an answer, can you? It seems like each year on New Year's Eve I have to take a few minutes out of my very busy schedule to take you by the hand and show you how to have a good time. Two years ago I submitted five ways to enjoy the loneliest night on Earth (if you can't get laid - and if you read this website regularly odds are you are not getting laid). Last year I offered five different options for enjoying New Year's Eve with less [...]

A classic Deserving of a spot on any mix CD Worthy of a download, but not of frequent play Dump it like a hot rock What a year 1969 was for Creedence Clearwater Revival. The San Francisco-based quartet followed up their 1968 debut album with three [...]

Back in the day Creedence Clearwater Revival were not considered to be a cool band. They just sounded way to commercial for hippies and critics-in-the-know. Releasing top-selling singles by the dozen (although none of those made it all the way to number #1, it surprising how much good stuff there is on the six album that the classic four-piece line-up released in a little over three years. Creedence are the kind of band that were made for greatest hits albums, while the original albums tend to be overlooked. Let's face it: John Fogerty [...]
Still looking for that perfect gift for the music lover in your family? Well, the holiday season is traditionally a time when compilations, box sets and reissues flood the marketplace--and this year i... Continue reading "More Gift Ideas: 'Tis the Season for Reissues" >

Ever wonder what your classic rock records would sound like if they were cut up, chopped, and remixed with hard hitting dirty electro beats? Well look no further.. Streetlab is a powerful remixing team, tackling everything from INXS to Crystal Castles. Here we've included a sample of these guys' large offering. They just released an EP that you can check out here. The remix of the Bob Marley track is very good, and I like the Creedence a lot. The remix of Immigrant Song is good too, but not the best I've heard. The INXS and [...]

This past semester I took a class at the University of Wisconsin called "Black Music and Modern American Culture". We covered black American music from James Carr, Sam Cooke and the sounds of the early 60's all the way to Wu-Tang, Outkast, Scarface, and the emergence of new-age hip-hop. Not only did the class make me feel smarter and cooler than basically everyone else, but I regained a deep appreciation for the soul, gospel, and blues roots of black music in the 1960s. Gone were three-hour Sufjan Stevens and Rogue Wave listening sessions. In came hours and hours of blues, [...]

Cat Power likes covers. And, it turns out, so does everyone else. If the success of her cover-filled Jukebox is any indicator, fans will receive her new EP The Dark End of The Street just as warmly. The record opens with the title track, an Aretha Franklin cover. While I don't care for the way she pronounces certain words, or the slightly nasal quality in her voice, she still has an incredibly warm and inviting tone. Certain elements of the song remind me of [...]

He may have been born, raised and is now living in Texas, but Bird Peterson is the master of all things Baltimore . Baltimore Club is definitely the heaviest but other influences include nu-skool breaks, screwed down Texas Rap, massive bass lines , hand claps and synths galore . Words from Bird... "People have misconceived B-more–[they think] you can take anything on the planet , throw the 'Sing Sing' loop [a sample of Salsoul recording artist Gaz] under it, and make it stutter. But [...]

Above: "Funeral for a Soldier" by Scott H. Spitzer for USAF (DOD 030403-F-1166S-001, public domain) Tuesday was Veteran's Day . Newly restored aircraft carrier the USS Intrepid-a ship that saw extensive combat in the Pacific during World War II-was rededicated as a museum in New York at Pier 86 on the Hudson River. In America, and in many countries around the world (where the holiday is known as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day), people took time to remember those who have served in their nation's military, especially those who lost their lives. THANK FUCKING GOD OBAMA WON!!! In a celebration of contrast, here are two songs, one that references a less-than-loved-by-the-left American president and one that references shitty American class politics: Old Mother Reagan.mp3 by The Violent Femmes About Ronald Reagan —two thoughts: Iran Contra, War on Drugs. 'NUFF SAID! Fortunate Son.mp3 by CCR About [...]

Everyone hates politics, just like everyone hates human waste. Unfortunately, the world can't turn without 'em both. On the plus side, at least the former doesn't smell all the time (unless you're impartial to ol' whiskey). Today though, politics are pretty, pretty... pretty popular. Today, of course, is Election Day. If you're unaware of this, you either a.) live in Morocco, b.) live under a rock, or c.) are an absolute recluse, who happened to find internet today. In that case, welcome aboard, the future is now, and here's the lowdown: Republican candidates John McCain and [...]

A bass player friend of mine called and asked if I wanted to get together with him and a guitarist for a jam session. Sure! So he agreed to do it at my studio (since that's where the drums are), we set a date and a time (and, of course, the bass player didn't show up!). But the guitarist and I got on well. So we've decided to quit our day jobs and make a living as rock stars, covering 'old guy rock' (and maybe a few new tunes that sound old). Here's our opening set [...]
I thought, once, about possibly posting frequently about great bands of yesterday. Unfortunately a lot of good ideas here at TWF have come and gone without really taking root in my blogging routine. And that might be a shame. This marks the second installment in Music History here on TWF. Previously I posted about The Who , this time around I'm talking about Creedence Clearwater Revival. CCR was a band made up of three high school pals, John Fogerty, Doug Clifford, and Stu Cook, who had a good time playing music together and hanging out. Occasionally, and [...]

Creedence Clearwater Revival: Fortunate Son [ purchase ] Does civic responsibility include the idea of putting one's very body in service to the country? Some cultures believe so; nations from Israel to Iraq, and from Mexico to Mongolia, mandate military service for young people as a basis for citizenship (though each defines eligibility distinctly -- Israel is relatively rare, for example, in conscripting both men and women). In cultures where drafting is historically normative, military service is seen as natural and [...]

New Cat Power covers EP "Dark End of the Street" will be released 12-9-08, but track list out now. This will give those not familiar with the originals plenty of time to get acquainted. Cat Power will also be at the Palladium Ballroom this week (on the 9th to be specific). This should be the perfect venue for someone like a Cat Power and opening act Appaloosa . "Auld Triangle" ( The Pogues ) "Dark End of the Street" ( James Carr ) ( DL ) [...]

If you take the towards Wassaic on the weekend, it'll drop you off at a Metro North little bench in the woods so you can go camping. But you know that . If you leave the bench and go west on the Appalachian Trail, you'll hit the Telephone Pioneers shelter in about 4 miles. If you go east, you'll hit the Wiley Shelter in about 6. There are lean-tos past both of these, but these are the closest [...]
What most people know about CCR is what they've learned while watching Vietnam movies. But in 3 short years, this true piece of Americana defined the country rock genre for the next 40 years. Everyone from Ryan Adams to Wilco to the Kings of Leon and even U2 owe a little debt to John Fogerty and Company. This week, all of CCR's albums are being re-released as 40th anniversary editions...all
