The great thing about Deer Tick live is the no frills, no bullshit, "it's only rock n' roll" attitude. Lead singer/guitarist John McCauley is the embodiment of it all. He's clearly in it for the music, and doesn't much care about self-image or putting on those rock band front man airs. But that's not to say he doesn't have a good time and doesn't embrace some of the - um - rock star lifestyle. Shuffling on stage last night with three bottles of Coors and the red plastic cup that was never [...]

I think it's fair to say that the secret is out when it comes to Crescent Ballroom , the newest and greatest venue in downtown Phoenix. I've yet to talk to a single person that wasn't absolutely thrilled with the spot, and I've got to say I share the same opinion. From the sound, to the benches in the back, to the multiple bars and fantastic food, there isn't much I can complain about. I would like the front lounge and outdoor bar to be a little bigger, but that's just nitpicking at this point. I think one of [...]
Crescent Shield has checked in with the following update about working on new material for an upcoming album: "Mike left a little while ago. Things started of badly, my recording computer died. :-( Then I heard Mike's vocals and lyrics for the new song. Wow! Fantastic. I just stuck a mic in front of him and a speaker and he recorded it into my o... Read More/Discuss on Metal Underground.com

Hallelujah, there's a killer new live music venue in my home town!! The Crescent Ballroom , open for just a week now, is mid-sized room (able to accommodate 400-500 people) in a cool 1917 brick building located at 2nd Ave. and Van Buren in downtown Phoenix. Great atmosphere, friendly staff, really good food in their patio lounge/restaurant, Cocina 10 (I recommend the bean & cheese burrito paired with a Moscow Mule - tasty). Dawes Last night, the Blitzen Trapper / Dawes traveling roadshow hit the Ballroom [...]

It's been a couple of crazy busy weeks for me, and unfortunately I haven't had much time to update this blog. Luckily I have had time to catch a couple of shows at the brand new Crescent Ballroom downtown. I've got to say that I'm absolutely in love with this venue, and not just because Stateside advertises on this blog. This is exactly what Phoenix has been needing. The sound is amazing, the layout and size of the venue are just right, and there are multiple bars filled with delicious drinks. Best of all, this will [...]

Just because I am sort of employed by Boomstick! in a photographic capacity doesn't mean I would just pitch this thing if it wasn't cool. On the contrary it's going to be VERY VERY cool. There are going to be cheap ass drinks and good music all happening in a brand new bad ass music venue. What isn't cool about that? Nothing ask me what isn't cool about that..... NOTHING! The whole thing get's started at 10pm and goes to "question marks". In this case "question marks" is 2am. [...]

I wrote this whole giant review about how wonderful the Crescent Ballroom is and how it is everything we have ALL been dreaming about for years, then I swiped two fingers instead of three on my macbook and lost the whole thing... So just take my word for it that everything was great and look at these mutha effing pictures! I should have the photos of What Laura Says done later on... so stay tuned for those!

The first show for Crescent Ballroom isn't until Oct. 3, but the new downtown Phoenix concert venue from Stateside Presents promoter Charlie Levy has inspired plenty of excitement and prose – not to mention a concert calendar that's starting to look mighty impressive. Newest on the list is a Nov. 5 date for electronic-pop duo Phantogram , whom we saw last October in what turned out to be a packed and sweaty fun time. I'm assuming some new music is in the works after the early 2010 release of [...]

image courtesy of Phoenix New Times It has been a long time coming and something that I have been dreaming and wishing for since we started this site in 2008. A truly bad ass music venue downtown! Sure Modified had it charms, but good sound, not smelling like shit and AC were not those charms, and the Trunk Space... let's just not talk about the Trunk Space. But news is hitting that the best and most wonderful Stateside Presents are finally fulfilling their destiny and opening up a venue [...]

Back in 2009, one of our favorite debut album of the year, and one of our favorite albums overall, came from Scotland courtesy of We Were Promised Jetpacks . Since then, the band have toured the states extensively and now are ready for the follow up act in the form of album number 2. After teasing the new material last week on You Tube, the band are ready today to provide all the details you've been waiting for when it comes to the new album, so here is the rundown. The new album [...]

It's a good time right now for Phoenix, AZ music fans. Two new big music clubs are opening up in the downtown district with cool bands and hopefully good vibes. The Foundry on 1st opens this weekend, and The Crescent Ballroom is booking shows for an expected fall opening. The Foundry on 1st is the new brainchild of longtime Phoenix promoter Danny Zelisko , who knows this city's music history and scene probably better than anyone. Billboard wrote about his departure from Clear Channel [...]

The Wrens, 2004 / photo by David Greenwald In a better world, the Wrens would be co-headlining shows with Spoon and pumping out a new album a year. Instead, it's been eight years since the band's The Meadowlands , and we don't have much to show for it. "Crescent," a demo from the Dear New Orleans charity compilation , is one bright spot - a song that makes the band sound like they could lay down another five-star classic tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

Magari are a new, three-piece psychedelic rock slash prog-metal band from Connecticut, USA. Their debut EP – ' A Crescent Dream ', released February 1 – shows real promise, and Magari could well turn out to be welcome additions to a genre dying for some new blood. 'A Crescent Dream' has a mini-concept running through its three songs – a dream sequence covering loss and its subsequent displacement, and the journey for getting back on track. Clocking in at 20 minutes, this EP is an ambitious first release for a band [...]
In celebration of the upcoming 200th Sunday Mix Tape, I've decided to spend a few days this week taking a leisurely stroll down memory lane. My memory's lane. I've compiled 199 official Sunday Mix Tapes as well as a few compilations that arrived on a Monday or other random day. It's time to take a look back and examine why this feature has become such a huge success. Since I can't post 200 MP3s this week, I'm going to list what is - in my opinion - the standout track from each installment of the series. About half [...]
As we approach the magical 200th installment of the "Sunday Mix Tape" series, each week seems to pass by quicker and quicker. Soon enough the big day will be here, and I'll have to look back upon nearly five years of work (although I took a year or more off in the middle), choose some of my favorite old mixes, and put together a huge celebratory compilation. There will be free wine and cheese for you stupid upper-middle-class losers who read this page. The rest of us will have to pay for our drinks, just like we always do. I [...]

One of our very favourite bands here at One Thirty BPM is The Wrens. Their album The Meadowlands was one of our favourites of the last decade and we have been waiting with baited breath for the follow-up. It's now been seven years. Finally we have something new from this New Jersey band; a song called "Crescent." Unfortunately it's not clear whether this is a preview of a new album, but it is a new track and that's good news. "Crescent" is to appear on a compilation called Dear New Orleans ; a [...]

i'm addicted to blip at the moment, enough to upload songs to blip myself rather than relying on what's out there. and today i did a bit of a tribute to the city of bristol theme. ::: beatnik filmstars - apathetic english ::: flying saucer attack - beach red lullaby ::: crescent - 360 ::: girlboy girl - unfamiliar ::: massive attack - daydreaming ::: the heads - quad ::: k.s.kollective - (to a) secret brother ::: [...]

holy, f'ing shit! 24 hours on a train is not as sexy as it sounds, let me tell ya. as much as i hate flying, if i ever have to come back to these parts, herndon, va, i am definitely flying. at the same time, though, it was really freakin relaxing which is something i so desperately needed and i did have my own seat for most of the trip. my own seat until about 2 am, which at the time i was sleeping and when i was awaken to move my shit, i couldnt fall asleep for most of [...]
