So with this year's Record Store Day now only four away, you've doubtless got that list scribbled up alright by now, right? The alarm's set for a time prior to the sun cracking like an abnormally viscid yolk oozing its sluggish way across the bleariest of retinae; the once swelling swear jar's been raided in what was the greatest fucking heist your kitchen's yet seen; the swag, or rather the copious dollops of shrapnel counted. And soon it'll all be yours – Daniel Johnston's Space Ducks on limited numbered 123 with the six-panel poster stuffed inside; The Residents' quintessentially batshite [...]

Damnation Festival have announced five more bands for their 2013 line-up: Vallenfyre, Crippled Black Phoenix, Negura Bunget, Moss, and The Sontaran experiment. Both Vallenfyre (that's Greg Mackintosh's side-project, pictured above) and Negura Bunget are being billed as the bands' sole UK shows for 2013. We'd also bet a pretty penny that Paul Catten's The Sontaran Experiment won't be playing too many shows this year either. They're not on an exclusivity deal or anything, it's just that they don't play many live shows. Look, just make sure you [...]
Billed as one story told two ways , the creative conjoining of sludgy Tokyo heck-raisers Boris and Bristol's now quiet rioter Joe Volk is a weird one in innumerable ways. Though will the imaginatively entitled Split Release be forever remembered as one of the greater stories told across 2012 now that we've truly descended into the nebulous blizzard of year-end, list-phrased prioritising? Well, the obvious answer would be a staunch no . Though that is primarily because most of said lists were outed long before this week's release date. [...]

In this Y U NO REVIEW, Anthony talks a bit about the latest album releases from Common, Crosses, Enter Shikari, Kayo Dot, and Asher Roth. Here are some short opinions on other albums that were missed this past month as well: 1. Machinedrum- SXLND (LuckyMe) I think people tend to assume that every album that gets incorporated into this segment must not be that enjoyable to me or something. That's not completely the truth since there are even decent releases that I can't necessarily get to. On [...]

...(Mankind) The Crafty Ape, The fifth Crippled Black Phoenix album is upon us and it marks a new chapter in the history of the band. The thematic focus for this album is firmly planted in the corruption of mankind and injustice, but also ultimately in the hope that all is not lost, and that there's a common thread connecting people of like-minds wherever you may travel. The music and themes

The band Crippled Black Phoenix features members of numerous underground mainstays , but don't call them a "supergroup." Apparently, they don't like that . They released a new album back in September, but it somehow slipped by me. It's titled I, Vigilante , and is the group's fourth studio album. Stream a favorite of mine from the album below, "Bastonge Blues." Considering CBP doesn't care much for making a fuss over their members or related projects, they probably don't care much [...]

Some time around the release of 200 Tons of Bad Luck , Crippled Black Phoenix mainman Justin Greaves (also of Electric Wizard and Iron Monkey) gave an interview where he referred to himself and the band as vigilantes. The idea of Greaves and his cohorts donning balaclavas and clearing the streets of shit bands such as My Chemical Romance with lashings of baseball bat action was particularly appealing. His argument was that whilst Crippled Black Phoenix might deal with difficult themes and depressing topics, there is always a glimmer of hope; something the likes of MCR spectacularly [...]

Lupus Pilum Mutat, Non Mentem – The wolf may change its fur, but not its nature.
You probably know Century Media for their work with groundbreaking, legendary artists like Stuck Mojo and My Own Victim, but they are also home to lesser-known bands like Lacuna Coil, Arch Enemy, Nevermore, Warbringer, Terror, and deathcore sensations Winds Of Plague and Suicide Silence. In all seriousness, though, I've worked with [...]

Jeffrey Lee Piercen (1958-1996) muistoa kunnioittava We Are Only Riders ei ole perinteinen tribuuttilevy. Tunnetuimpien kappaleiden sijaan mukana olevat sangen nimekkäät artistit ovat lähteneet tulkitsemaan yhdessä erinäisiltä kaseteilta ja nauhoilta löytyneitä viimeistelemättömiä Piercen kappaleaihioita. Osa biiseistä perustuu karkeisiin demoversioihin (mm. Ramblin' Mind, Constant Waiting ja Free To Walk), kun taas toisten pohjana on ainoastaan instrumentaaliraidat ilman sanoituksia (The Snow Country). Ainoastaan Lucky Jim on aikaisemmin julkaistu, mutta sekin rakennettiin tätä albumia varten erilaista demoversiota hyödyntäen. Mielenkiintoista on huomata, miten artistit ovat päätyneet hyvinkin erilaisiin lopputuloksiin, vaikka rakennusaineet ovat olleet samat. Kappaleet ovat myös [...]

Guess I'm not going to be looked at as a trendsetter this year. Believe me, I'm as surprised as anyone that my two favorite releases of the year were put out by bands that were active in the hair metal community in the late '80s. But when I went back and scanned through iTunes to see what I listened to the most, these are the ones that were clear cut favorites. 1. Danger Danger - Revolve The best CD of 1989 was released 20 years late! This [...]

Post rock -yhtye Mogwain Dominic Aitchisonin ja Electric Wizardista sekä Iron Monkeysta tutun Justin Greavesin johtama brittiläinen Crippled Black Phoenix nähdään 2. marraskuuta Helsingin Nosturissa ja seuraavana iltana Turun Klubilla. Jyräävän Godspeed You! Black Emperor -henkisen post rockin ohella Crippled Black Phoenixin musiikissa kuuluu vaikutteita Sigur Rós -tyylisestä tunnelmallisesta elokuvamusiikista, Pink Floydin kulta-ajan progressiivisesta rockista sekä Isiksen kaltaisesta post metalin ja doomin sekoituksesta. Uransa alusta saakka Portishead-yhtyeen johtamalle Invada Recordsille levyttänyt kokoonpano julkaisi debyyttialbuminsa A Love of Shared Disasters vuonna 2006. Viime keväänä kollektiivilta ilmestyi rajoitettuna painoksena hetkessä loppuunmyyty [...]

Sat 26th Sept - The Colston Hall The place was packed… Thoughtforms were in the foyer… filling up the empty sky-space with distorted thunder; we hung off the stairs, soaking it all up… as always, I was loving them, the tide switching from menace to mesmerising as the tunes spread out of their original outlines, like a berserk sewing machine playing patchwork crazy paving with your head. [...]
