Carlie Armstrong Not much stays fresh after 30 years, particularly something as fleeting as creativity, and not even a band that's as stylistically rangy as Yo La Tengo is immune to the of feeling of repeating themselves. That's not necessarily a bad thing, as their last release - 20092s Popular Songs - was an enjoyable summation of everything Yo La Tengo has done well over the past three decades or so, from concise poppers to sprawling rockers on the x-axis and quiet to loud on the y, but didn't really [...]

Pavla Kopecna In mentioning yesterday that winning the Mercury Prize allowed Alt-J to graduate from playing Wrongbar in September to playing The Phoenix in March, we can also scientifically see what only getting nominated to the shortlist gets you. Django Django , who were shortlisted on the strength of their self-titled debut , also played Wrongbar in late September and have also just scheduled a Spring tour that brings them back to town in March - March 12, specifically, and at The Opera House. So based on the capacities of [...]

Crooked Fingers hasn't released an album since Breaks In The Armor , which came out in October 2011, so it's decidedly odd to see the band dropping a video from that album now, in December 2012. But hey, a little extra Crooked Fingers is definitely never a bad thing! The clip for "Bad Blood" was directed by Jamie Fleischel and stars Mike Lust (both of whom work for AV Club ) as the grown-up version of the kid from Van Halen's 1984 album cover, which is a pretty funny concept IMO. Check it out. [...]
North Carolina's Crooked Fingers - led by Archers of Loaf man Eric Bachmann - popped over last week to play some shows. We caught him with Liz Durrett in a basement corridor, where they played a raw version of 'Your Control', taken from the 2009 eponymous EP.
Click here to view the embedded video. On election night, Eric Bachmann and his Crooked Fingers crew came through town to play a show at the Tree Bar with John Vanderslice. Here's a sublime version of "Sleep All Summer" off the 2005 Merge release Dignity & Shame .
Crooked Fingers Appearing at The Record Bar (Kansas City, MO) on Saturday, November 10, 2012
Click here to view the embedded video. Eric Bachmann returns to the Tree Bar , this time as Crooked Fingers, and he's bringing John Vanderslice along with him. The show is Tuesday, Nov. 6, and the $15 tickets will be on sale at the Tree Bar starting Monday at 7 p.m. Obviously, this show will sell out, so if you're as excited as I am about seeing these guys in such an intimate venue (now with an unobstructed view!), I'd recommend getting to the Tree on Monday. [...]

John Vanderslice at Mercury Lounge in 2010 ( more by Amanda Hatfield ) John Vanderslice and Crooked Fingers (the project of Archers of Loaf frontman Eric Bachmann) are teaming up for a co-headlining tour together this fall which hits the NYC area for shows at The Bell House on November 2 and Maxwell's on November 4 . Tickets for those shows are not on sale yet but check ticketweb for updates on the Bell [...]

West Fest is one of a handful of Chicago neighborhood festivals that books very good bands. The main stage, curated by Empty Bottle , features Saturday headliner Black Lips and opener Man or Astro-Man . Mates of State headline Sunday with Crooked Fingers opening. Click here for the full lineup. You can catch three of the bands at Empty Bottle this weekend: Black Lips play Friday, Man or Astro-Man plays Saturday and [...]

No More Fake Labels Okay, this one would have been a lot more fitting last week, what with Eric Bachmann leading the reunited Archers Of Loaf into town last Saturday and the release of Guided By Voices' second album of the reunion/year in Class Clown Spots A UFO last Tuesday, but that's schedules for you, and I kind of think this one's worth waiting for. It comes from Sing For Your Meat , a tribute to Dayton, Ohio's finest released [...]

Frank Yang When we left off yesterday , I was biking furiously across town to get from The Rivoli to The Phoenix for Archers Of Loaf . So why not roll this show into the festival coverage? Well, although some wristbands were granted admission and the premiere of the What Did You Expect? live Archers doc was one of the big gets of the NXNE film festival, this show wasn't technically part of the festival and I am, if nothing else, a stickler for these sorts of things. [...]

Last weekend I did something a bit taboo. No, nothing that bad. What I did was this: I took my email inbox, and I cleared it. I archived everything - over 15,000 unread messages. It had just gotten a bit too out of control. Then, this week, I checked ALL my emails, filtered out what I wanted to cover, and pulled some select ones to add to my radio show. Understand this: going through sometimes up to 100 emails in an evening is very time consuming. You have [...]

Liz Flyntz If we can regard Beach House literally as their namesake, which is to say as a holiday getaway, a reliably stolid place to escape from the real world, then the amount of adoration they've gotten for largely sticking to their skeletal formula through four albums now is understandable. Their fans don't want them to reinvent themselves with each outing; they want that comforting blanket of Victoria Legrand's narcoleptic vocals and whirring keyboard interwoven with Alex Scally's languid slide guitar, and across their first two records - their 2006 self-titled debut and [...]

Crooked Fingers' Breaks in the Armor was one of my favorite records released last year - Eric Bachmann's best since Red Devil Dawn , I'd argue. If you pre-ordered the album through the Merge store, you also got a bonus download with acoustic versions of the songs. Now Breaks in the Armor: Acoustic Demo Version is getting an official release on iTunes and the Merge store . Give a listen to the beautifully stripped-down "Bad Blood" below: Bachmann said of the demos, "Recording a stripped-down version [...]
Crooked Fingers - Our New Favorite

Frank Yang Know what makes it a bit difficult to concentrate on covering stuff in the afternoon? Finding out in the morning that you've won a ticket to see Bruce Springsteen in an intimate theatre show that night. Not bragging - okay, a little - just adding some context. And bragging. Yeah. Anyways, after doing my victory dance (don't pretend you don't have a victory dance) I did get out into the world to check out a day show at Jackalope run by fellow blogger Rawkblog that featured [...]
