Photo via Merge Records I Can't Go On, I'll Go On , the 2006 debut from The Broken West , was a perfect example of a band breaking no new ground whatsoever, but being so good at it that criticisms like that are irrelevant. Go On was a splendid bit of '70s SoCal, Big Star meets Byrds power-pop revival that proudly wore its influences on its pearl-buttoned sleeves and if they'd opted to follow it up with more of the same, few would have complained. One of my favorite concerts to happen within the High Noon Saloon was seeing Crooked Fingers there in April, 2005. It was that performance that catapulted Dignity and Shame from casual listening to heavy rotation, and eventually finding itself on my year end list of favorites . In between albums, front man Eric Bachmann released a solo effort To The Races , that, while very good, still left me longing for that Crooked Fingers sound. On October 7th, Crooked Fingers [...]

The Shaky Hands' new album Lunglight is out and on September 16th at 7PM they will be performing live at Portland's Music Millennium. The Shaky Hands - We Are Young

Crooked Fingers have announced the release of their new studio album Forfeit/Fortune . The album will hit the streets October 7th. For this record, man Crooked Finger Eric Bachmann will be joined by special guests that include members of DeVotchKa and Silver Jews. If that weren't enough we also get a duet with silver throated country star Neko Case. It will be interesting to see how her dulcet tones mix with Bachmann's Neil-Diamond-in-need-of-a-coug h-drop singing style. Stereogum has an MP3 available for the track "Phony Revolutions" [...]

Internet trickster Ben Folds has joined forces with Adult Swim absurdists Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim on a video for " You Don't Know Me ." Regina Spektor's not in it, but Eric cross-dresses so attractively you'd never know the difference. Awesome video, great job !

Sorry to go all nudie on you, but it's art, folks. Look alive! Crooked Fingers will be playing The Great American on November 11th, and local faves Port O'Brien will be there to open for them. For those not familiar, Crooked Fingers is the band created by Eric Bachman following the breakup of Archers Of Loaf. Initially it seemed to be his solo alias, but he's since released solo records as well. Crooked Fingers, on the other hand, has transformed into a "real" [...]
I was recently introduced to the fantastic Head Like A Kite, who are able to create a modern-industrial- pop sound to their music, that is overwhelming to both the body and ears. Head Like A Kite is comprised of just two men, Dave Einmo (on guitar, synthesizer, sampler, and vocals), and Trent Moorman (drums, keys, [...]

(Photo via Chromewaves ) I am a few days behind with this, but some interesting news bits on Eric Bachmann : 1. For you kids in the LA area, tickets are still available for Bachmann's solo show tonight at the Tangier for all of $12. (I'm green with envy btw...) 2. Bachmann's band, the very awesome Crooked Fingers has a new disc out October 7 called "Forfeit/Fortune," aaaannndd...he's putting it out himself, he didn't resign with Merge Records . He says: ...eventually decided [...]

I found Crooked Fingers when I was browsing the artist roster at Merge Records (label of i.e. Camera Obscura) and fell immediately in love with their rocky blend of male and female vocals. Crooked Fingers was formed by Eric Bachmann (former member of Archers of Loaf) The first release of the band was a the selftitled album, soon followed by "Bring On The Snakes ", which brought him some attention. Not much later Crooked Fingers signed to Merge Records, who released his " Reservoir Songs EP " (filled with covers) "Red Devil Dawn" followed in 2003, first [...]
After getting turned on to Travis Woods cool music blog, Web in Front , I got itchin to hear some Archers of Loaf . So I tinkered around on the Hype and found this great solo acoustic Eric Bachmann plus interview link . Amazing...I had to chuckle though, I'm 99% sure he no longer lives in the Triangle area, prolly hasn't in years, but he's still on Merge and has those specific and wonderful Triangle inflections in his voice when he says certain words. Then there's Crooked Fingers...I was introduced [...]

Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I've collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their "song obsessions of the week." Quite often it's easy to explain why the song is good; it's much hard to explain why we're obsessed. Maybe you'll become obsessed with one of these. - Adrian ( me ): Aimee Mann - Calling on Mary (mp3) [...]
THE LESSON PLAN Even if you don't recognize Steven " Steinski " Stein by name, it's impossible not to feel the impact he's made on DJ culture. Steinski and Double Dee's Lessons releases are the Holy Grail for crate diggers, but soon they will be available on CD, courtesy of Illegal Art Records. Here's what he told us via email, "Details at this moment are a bit hazy. Working title is What Does it All Mean? Multitrack Recordings by Steinski and Several Other People. [...]
So there i was checking my e-mails as normal and i start reading one from merge records where i read a review of this bands album Dignity and shame . They are from Seattle,Washington but don't let that put you off. Led by former arches of loaf singer Eric bachmann this album by all accounts is a concept album based on the lives of the spanish Bullfighter Manolete and the Spanish actress Lope Sino although you wouldn't necessarily know that from just listening to it. You can hear all sorts of [...]
