It's pretty quiet here, just after noon on a rare sickday at home. The kids are at school, as they should be; the wife is off with a friend, doing some last minute shopping for Friday's opening night. One of the cats - I can never tell them apart - curls up next to me on the couch; the dog rests on the chair opposite, her eyes closed, her breathing gentle in sleep. And though the phone rings occasionally, startling in the overwhelming silence, I've turned off the music, the better to hear the rare [...]
Guided by Voices , who celebrated Matador Records' 21st birthday earlier this month in Vegas, will be on the receiving end of a celebration early next year. And according to TwentyFourBit , although the GBV tribute album so far has no name, it will have plenty of exciting names on the tracklist. As Wayne Coyne mentioned on Twitter in September, his Flaming Lips recorded their cover of "Smothered in Hugs" for the compilation. Now, No More Fake Labels founder Misty Dawn Briggs has revealed to Independent Weekly a bunch more artists [...]

Crooked Fingers at Great American Music Hall, from the HAD Archive It's no secret that we love Crooked Fingers , so when we discovered that Mr. Bachmann will be making his way up the coast in December with a series of small shows, we were understandably psyched. Crooked Fingers unquestionably deliver live, and seeing them in rooms this size will be more than a treat. In New York, that means a show at Mercury Lounge; tickets go on sale this Friday at noon. [...]

Yes, I'm back! It took me the deletion of Thieves By Tuesday* at the free web hosting site, Blogger, to realize the mistake I've made in the first place upon making this blog, and its working with Blogger. I'm in high hopes now that I'm in the WordPress family, an event like that will be avoided for eternity. You might notice how, over and over, I reiterate the stress I have with my college course and the absence of free time with all of the things I've been balancing. It's annoying, I know. But every single [...]
[Birthday greetings go out today to Owen Pallett ...] Tonight's top 3 hangs: ☛ Funeral Party — the young East L.A. rockers who recently made NME's list of the year's top new bands — kick off a residency at the Bootleg Theater. They're singed to RCA, which has pushed back the release of their debut album "Golden Age of Knowhere" to January, but there's Mike Relm's video for "NYC Moves to the Sound of LA," above. ☛ Wait. Think. Fast. [featured [...]

Musicians are businesspeople-at least the smart ones. While up and coming bands once started their own labels and booked their own tours (full-time jobs alone), they've now expanded to crowdfunding album production ( Kickstarter , Sellaband ), selling merch online without the high host percentage cuts ( Bandcamp ) and much more as DIY is pushed into new territory. Entrepreneurial successes this summer alone include Crooked Fingers, who raised over $12,000 to pay for recording and manufacturing a limited-edition vinyl 12" of cover songs-twice his goal. Amanda Palmer realized her goal in mere [...]
Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive Kevin Phillips Six years is a long time between records, but that's how long it's been since indie-folk-pop duo Azure Ray released their acclaimed album, 'Hold on Love.' Finally, the pair -- Orenda Fink and Maria Taylor -- are about to break that recording silence with 'Drawing Down the Moon,' a new full-length album set for release on Saddle Creek Records in September, which will be [...]

Frank Yang I've previously bemoaned the dearth of festivals in the 416 this Summer, but on Thursday night at the Molson Amphitheatre, if you squinted just right, it certainly looked like a festival. Sure, it was only four bands deep but it certainly had many of the necessary bases covered - buzzy young up-and-coming act? Check. Hometown representation? Check. Critically acclaimed, indie cred-toting vets? Check. Mind-bending, world-class headliner? Check and check. Providence by way of Brooklyn's Fang Island represented the rookies, and their 6:30 [...]

As predicted, it's been a strong year for tributes and cover compilations; here we are only halfway into summer, and already we're looking at our third feature post on the topic. Cover albums can go either way, of course - as can any cover - but there's plenty of cream in this particular crop: the coverlover's bread and butter is a fattening bounty, and we're thrilled once again to bring you the newest and most noteworthy from all corners of the folkworld. New folk supergroup [...]

New Wax Eight years ago Crooked Fingers released Reservoir Songs , an EP of covers that found Eric Bachmann and company tackling songs by Prince, Queen, Kris Kristofferson, Neil Diamond, Bruce Springsteen, and David Bowie. An essential piece to Crooked Fingers' discography, the all-covers EP was intended to be a yearly project but the idea quickly faded in favor of original material and other projects. Luckily the idea never died completely because Bachmann and his band are back with a new EP of imaginative covers. The album [...]

Thanks to everyone that made it out to Club Garibaldi on Thursday night for Crooked Fingers . I hope you enjoyed the show as much as I did. Do take the time to check out Liz Durrett's solo work (she was holding down drum duties in the band). Dan returned from the show with a slew of videos from the show, including a Moby Grape cover , " Crowned In Chrome, " and a blistering verson of " Revenge. " Check them all out here . Milwaukee A.V. So it's a Friday, and the World Cup is in full swing, and if you're like me that means you really don't care about much else (let alone writing a new post for your little blog). And even though I'm more than thrilled to watch the US v Ghana game tomorrow followed by the England v Germany game on Sunday I'm still taking time to post a few random cover songs that have caught my attention over the past month or so. You are very very welcome. mp3 : Crooked Fingers - Under Pressure (Queen Cover) [...]

Welcome to summer. There's tons of albums that I turn to on a seasonal basis once the weather takes a turn in the sunny direction. One of those is Crooked Fingers Dignity & Shame , which pretty much blew my mind when it was released in 2005. Though I'm sure there are dissenters, front-to-back, Dignity & Shame sits atop the band's recorded output to date as far as my ears are concerned. I feel extremely fortunate to be bringing Crooked Fingers to Club Garibaldi in [...]

So if you were to say the name " Eric Bachmann " to a regular person, they'd probably reply with "Who?" but that's to be expected because the vast majority of the artists I feature on this blog are "Who?" worthy to the vast majority of people but that doesn't make them any less important and Eric Bachmann is no different. Fact of the matter is that any indie kid who doesn't know at least half the words [...]

Formerly the frontman of '90s rock band Archers of Loaf, Eric Bachmann has been crafting music with his band Crooked Fingers for over a decade. He writes incisive, pitch-perfect songs (remember "Sleep All Summer" that The National and St. Vincent covered last year? It was one of my favorite finds of those warm months, and Nick Hornby's as well ). Sleep All Summer - Crooked Fingers Sleep All Summer - The National & St. Vincent [ from the [...]
