crosby stills & nash - almost cut my hair (mp3) the mancunian male is rather fond of his hair. it comes with the territory. you inherit the parka jacket, the manc swagger, the cocky attitude, and of course the gallagher barnet. but getting this hair cut, now thats a problem. it takes years upon years to gain someone's trust, and only then are they allowed near this sacred hair adornment... it would seem that those hazy woodstock days were no different. david crosby, stephen stills & graham nash [...]
The seed of this post was planted while listening to Iceberg 95 on my Sirius radio. Sloan was a guest DJ. They played their song below and called it a suite. Made me wonder about some other nice suites (and/or songs with suite in the title). Sloan ~ Fading into Obscurity Feist ~ Leisure Suite Sex Mob ~ Pygmy Suite Wilco ~ Pieholden Suite (demo) Pink Floyd ~ Rain in the country (suite) [...]

Ptolemy's map of the world. There are some things about the way the world began that puzzle us, but not quite as much as what happened to the world after that. After Ireland failed to answer her father's scheduled morning phone call from New York on April 11, Alec went berserk on her voice mail, saying "Once again, I have made an ass of myself trying to get to a phone," adding, "you have insulted me for the last time." [...]

It's strange how a compilation can make an artist you'd previously just liked turn into one that you love. The other day I borrowed a new David Crosby called Voyage from my dad, and it's something of a stunner. Beautifully compiled by Graham Nash, it features the best of David's work from his time in the Byrds, CSN, CSNY, solo and with Graham Nash in a three cd set. The first disc, which reaches from the Byrds up to his seminal solo debut If Only I Could Remember My Name and just beyond it is completely joyous. So [...]

It's no secret I have an interest in the late sixties, early seventies Laurel Canyon/L.A. music scene; even today, living in Los Angeles, you occasionally catch a glimpse of its past, be it an aging bungalow, a street, or the hills themselves. Being long before my time, in an effort to get closer to the tunes [...]
The other day I contributed the following post to the quite wonderful Sweeping The Nation. As I haven't got time tonight for something more new, I thought i'd repost it here for anyone who'd missed it: The power of religion in people's lives, both positively and negatively, has to me seemed to be a difficult subject for popular song. Often, on the positive side, we get musicians who are far more interested in expressing the strength of their faith than they are in producing something beautiful. Thus we have huge industries of Christian Music made specifically for Christian [...]
I downloaded the Crosby, Stills and Nash version from the great Bumrocks a while ago and have been listening to it ever since. Supposedly the song is written by Crosby, Stills and Paul Katner of Jefferson Airplane. There was some dispute over who actually wrote it and it was released by both Crosby, Stills and Nash and Jefferson Airplane. Good Good. Jefferson Airplane - Wooden Ships Crosby, Stills and Nash - Wooden Ships

In honor of Mother's Day, here are a few songs my mom loves. Give yer mum a big hug (or a phone call), she deserves it. Antonio Carlos Jobim - "Wave": mp3 My mother isn't very hip. But I have to give her credit for introducing me to bossa nova and its master practitioner, one Tom Jobim. Listening to his album Wave led me to his work with Stan Getz and Frank Sinatra, as well as on to Luiz Bonfa [...]
