After his former band, Cross Canadian Ragweed, dissolved, Cody Canada formed another. Called the Departed , they follow the same red dirt path blazed by the likes of CCR, and their first album was released last year.… [ Read more ] [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]

I did a little playlist shuffle on January 1st to get a prediction of how 2012 is gonna be. A musical version of Tarot cards, if you will. 1. Athenaeum - Flat Tire 2. Bare, Jr. - You Blew Me Off 3. Cross Canadian Ragweed - Burn Like the Sun (Hmmm, seems like its going to be a rough start in the romance area) 4. [...]

The newest issue of Oklahoma Today is officially on newsstands today. This issue is a special Oklahoma country music collector's edition, with six different covers available. "With our state's incredible history and talent in every conceivable facet of country music, even we are a little surprised it took us fifty-five years to produce this issue. It includes a state-of-the-genre feature written by Holly Bailey, senior political reporter for Yahoo! News; a discography by Ryan LaCroix; and a history piece on Roger Miller by Randy Krehbiel. Thanks [...]

I came up in the Red Dirt music scene listening to Cross Canadian Ragweed , Jason Boland , Robert Earl Keen and the rest of the classics. So it was heartbreaking for me when Cross Canadian Ragweed announced their breakup. I complete understood the reasons behind it and have a lot of respect for a man walking away from his dream to raise his special needs child. I appreciate the fact that the band agreed, way back in the olden days, that they would never be any less than the members that founded it. All of [...]
In April, a couple dozen musicians came together for a celebration of red dirt music in Stillwater, under the title of Red Bull Gypsy Café . The event name pays homage to the site at The Farm where jam sessions sprung up over the years. Musicians who played the event include Cody Canada, Stoney LaRue, Mike McClure, Steve Rice, Randy Crouch, Tom Skinner, Red Dirt Rangers, Greg Jacobs, Don Morris, John Parker Millsap, Bill Erickson, Monica Taylor, Bob Wiles, Kevin & Dustin Welch, Larry Spears, Susan Herndon, Jimmy LaFave, Travis [...]
Ten years ago today, we experienced the greatest sports tragedy the state of Oklahoma has ever seen. Within several days after the accident, Cody Canada of Cross Canadian Ragweed wrote "On A Cloud" about the ten men that died that day. The song was featured on Ragweed's 2002 self-titled album and is available for download on iTunes . (more...)

Cody Canada and Jeremy Plato of Cross Canadian Ragweed aren't letting their band's indefinite hiatus slow them down and have already started up a new band, The Departed . LISTEN: KKOW's interview with Cody Canada Other band members include guitarist Seth James , Tulsa keyboardist Steve Littleton (Stoney LaRue, The Medicine Show) and Yukon drummer David Bowen (Stoney LaRue, Bleu Edmondson). The Departed's debut, an Oklahoma tribute album, is tentatively called [...]

While a lot of folks bill this kid as being in the same genre as folks like Stoney LaRue , Cross Canadian Ragweed , Max Stalling , et al. it is my opinion that he's not. Now mind you, I hadn't heard a lot of his stuff before Junky Star but what I had heard I wouldn't have classified as Red Dirt which is probably why I hadn't actually checked out more of his stuff. I got this album from a friend of mine and it sat un-listened to and gathering dust until a few [...]

On October 24, 2010 Cross Canadian Ragweed played their final show. They rocked a sell out crowd at Joe's in Chicago to close out a tour during which they announced that the band would be taking a hiatus. I was pretty damn disappointed because after all my love for these boys and all the shows I go to I never got to see them play live. Something always seemed to come up. Aside from my disappointment this final shows signals the end of an era. Cross Canadian Ragweed have been the unofficial poster boys for the Texas Country scene and [...]

To continue on with the transportation theme (two out of the last three top 52s have been about transportation) this weeks theme is car songs. These can be any songs about cars and there are a lot of songs about cars out there to choose from. I didn't go deep this week and just picked the first five that popped in to my head. It shouldn't be a hard little list to make for anyone. Anyway here's my list: ALL - Hot Rod Lincoln | This is just a bad ass cover! Cross [...]

I don't know if we've ever talked about this on ninebullets, but even if we haven't I doubt if it would come as a surprise that I download music. I buy a lot of music but I also download my fair share. A lot of it comes from random PR emails but there is plenty that comes from me firing up my favorite P2P app or Bittorrent client and castnetting band names, maybe because they sound interesting or for whatever reason I might decide to pull down a band I've never heard of. I don't say this to [...]

So we got a suggestion on Twitter to do a Top 5: Drinking Songs and I wanted to run with it but there are so many different kinds of drinking songs it's hard to make a single list. So I am running with the suggestion but it ain't gonna be just one list. The week's list is all about those times in life when hearing song sent you over the edge and out to the bar. Be it too much stress and some song was that straw the broke the camel's back or you were in an awesome mood and [...]
The Spider Dome , 3219 E 92nd St., in Perkins was destroyed in a fire early Monday morning. Perkins Fire Chief Joe Barta said the electrical fire was hard to extinguish given the building's unusual structure. Owner Bill Tucker, who bought the business in December, said he hopes to rebuild. The bar's is best known as the venue in Cross Canadian Ragweed 's 2002 music video for "Don't Need You". The Spider Dome opened on July 14, 2000. (more...)

Wade Bowen is one of my favorite Texas/Red Dirt boys and he has finally dropped a Live at Billy Bob's Texas album on us as a CD/DVD combo. If you know anything about the scene you know that everyone has to do one of these at some point and that they are always good. You can look through the careers of Jason Boland, Cross Canadian Ragweed, and just about any other Texas artist and you'll find one of these discs in their releases. It's not limited to Texas boys either with the likes of David Allen Coe, Merle [...]

Cross Canadian Ragweed have announced they are taking a break from their almost constant touring, according to The Texas Music Chart . A few days ago, drummer Randy Ragsdale told the band that he needed to be at home with his family, specifically his autistic son. "For many years my band has been my top priority. Being in a touring band you have to give it your all, give it 100%. Right now, I need to be at home for my family, particularly my son JC, who has autism. I [...]

Cody Canada, lead singer of Cross Canadian Ragweed , was hospitalized last night after being struck in head with a liquor bottle from the crowd at the 19th Annual Calf Fry in Stillwater. According to the band's Facebook page , Canada received a concussion and over 20 stitches. The doctors have advised him not to play tonight at their scheduled show in Kansas City. There have been concerns over security at Calf Fry in past years as fans have thrown plastic beer pitchers on stage. Below [...]
Autopsy IV note: In what is becoming a regular occurance, a reader ( Chuck ) sent me a show review earlier this week. I hope y'all enjoy it. Reckless & Ragged: Neighborhood Theatre – Charlotte, NC 3/5/2010 People who follow the Texas/Red Dirt music scene are familiar with the friendly "rivalry" that exists between Reckless Kelly and Cross Canadian Ragweed. The pranks these two bands have played on each other range from the harmless to the down-right disgusting. Through all [...]
