Sitting down to record his latest album, Todd Gautreau says he "[attempted] to make a more optimistic record. . . see if I could construct more universal pop songs." Gautreau's band, the Dallas-based Crushed Stars , isn't exactly a project known for its uplifting ditties. Still, with a vocal quality hinting at Michael Stipe's more down-beat moments and a musicality echoing Red House Painters, there is something universal about the new album, In The Bright Rain . As per usual, much of the instruments on In The Bright Rain were played by [...]

It's easy to understand why there's a lot of buzz around Todd Gautreau and his project Crushed Stars. The guy's voice instantly registers thoughts of R.E.M. On March 6th, Simulacra Records will release In The Bright Rain the latest from Crushed Stars. While Gautreau performed most of the instrumentation himself, he borrowed a few accomplished musicians -- drummer Jeff Ryan (St. Vincent, War on Drugs) Howard Draper (formerly of Okkervil River/Shearwater) and Buffi Jacobs (The Polyphonic Spree). Check out the first single "Brighter Now" below. Read more »

Still tired. Work still sucks. So there's really nothing new to tell. Enjoying some old favorites from previous years, while trying to get myself going and get some work done. Not easy. One of the tracks included in today's playlist is Beatrice in the other World by Crushed Stars from the wonderful album Convalescing In Braille . Not sure if I'm allowed to post it for streaming, but since it's one of the most beautiful tracks I know and [...]

I recently saw a review of Sagara on a website called CokeMachineGlow. Conrad Amenta, who's very savvy re: electronica, feels that Joachim Dyrdahl 's latest effort is less than innovative at merging gamelan influences with electronica and dance. I'm paraphrasing, but that seems to be the gist. All I have for comparison with Sagara is Dyrdahl's last effort, En Fin Tid . Dyrdahl is such a proficient knob-turner and mixer, he's able to project any desired mood. EFT [...]

[Three cool cover songs that caught our ear — including one for those Arcade Fire fans who waited in line all night to buy tickets for tonight's show:] All Wrong and the Plans Change , "Twisted (Keith Sweat)" — The L.A. quartet spearheaded by singer/bassist Kassia Conway and drummer Amy Wood last year released its debut "I'm Like Whatever." Here, Conway delivers a smoldering take on Keith Sweat's mid-1990s hit. Crushed Stars [...]

Best of 2010 : EPs/Singles | Songs | Albums | Rawky Awards Since I've already made my feelings about rankings, best-ofs and lists in general clear, here are a few things you need to know about 2010: For those of us nerdy and foolhardy enough to keep up with Internet indie culture, there were more "relevant" albums to listen to than ever before. Thanks to a blogosphere in which any band with an MP3 can find someone to like them (and in which I caught a lot of shit [...]

Speaking of Crushed Stars, mastermind Todd Gautreau will be bringing his project to La Grange tonight to showcase his latest material, which, mind you, is mostly the product of his own mind an... Continue reading "Bonus MP3: Crushed Stars -- "Eyeliner"" >

In a year deluged with jangling guitars and vocals drowning in enough reverb to kill a Olympic swimmers, please summon the strength to listen to Crushed Stars' Convalescing in Braille with fresh ears. Like The Radio Dept. or, before them, Yo La Tengo, the band's lonely pop places craft first. Even its simplest moments seem examined for maximum headphones richness: how the lightly clipping drums of "Spark" contrast with singer Todd Gautreau's distant, wounded vocals; reaching the bottom of of the 10-foot-deep cymbals of "Black Umbrellas"; the firmness of piano keys against warbling synthesizers on "A Day [...]

Convalescing In Braille is the latest by Todd Gautreau, who often goes by the moniker Crushed Stars . Oft descriptive words associated with Gautreau and his Crushed Stars may relate to the night hours, overcast days, or infinite soundscapes. These words fit - there's something oddly spacial about the dreamy pop of Crushed Stars, and that's what makes the band, and an album like Convalescing In Braille work so well. Beyond the chill strums of guitar strings and emotive piano, beyond the shuffle [...]
