Ladies and gents, you chose your hunk last month, now we throw down with a battle of the babes. More like it: BEST IN SHOW: May = Chris Chu, Koley O'Brien or Eric Victorino Cass McCombs to release album in June Eric Victorino Crowned May's Best in Show

I'm taking the Ben approach to my post this week and doing a recap of some underrated hits from "the past": up first, my most recent times, '09. Since I have to show some discretion, a bunch of good tunes got cut here – I really can't justify putting anything from Explorers or Second Family Band (unless you wanna listen in for another 92 minutes), and though I love Forget the Night Ahead , putting the Twilight Sad on any mix is kinda like pooping in the special water at communion. This may not work as the most representative [...]

veinte canciones del año pasado que podría haber colgado en el blog, de no haberme dejado vencer por la pereza. bachelorette : mindwarp (my electric family) brilliant colors : absolutely anything (introducing) camera obscura : french navy (my maudlin career) christy & emily : lover's talk (superstition) cryptacize : blue tears (mythomania) [...]

We are going on a Fiery Furnaces New Years Extravaganza tomorrow! The Friedberger's are treating us to two shows on back-to-back nights in Chicago. Tomorrow night they are playing at Schuba's and on New Year's Eve they are playing at Lincoln Hall with Cryptacize and The Smith Westerns. We are still looking for a place to crash since hotels are ridiculous on New Years, so if you have any ideas, send them our way. Regardless, we can't wait to get up there and bring in the new year with one of the best bands [...]

Since releasing the fantastic Get Young last year the guys in Pretty & Nice have spent a good chunk of 2009 on the road, opening up for acts like The Thermals and building up their following. We haven't been able to chat with them about what they're planning to follow Get Young up with, but we're sure these guys are probably getting ready to do something to that extent. The guys combined to submit two pretty sweet lists, the first is a compilation of "Under-Appreciated Acts" they hope to turn [...]

The Bay Area may not have a single unified scene, but its diverse musical communities produced a ton of acclaimed records in 2009. The following list collects thirty-two of the highlights that made this another banner year for Bay Area indie music. It's a collection that showcases the depth of Bay Area indie in 2009, and one suspects that few other regions have offered this volume of quality releases this year. A couple of qualifiers: This isn't a comprehensive list of excellent local records from 2009 or intended as any sort of official Bay Bridged [...]

Are you fed up with all of the 2009 Year-End Online Music Lists yet? We're not! And clearly, since you're here and all, you're not either. Right on. What you'll find below is a list of our "top" 15 albums released in 2009. What does this mean? Our favorites? The best records we heard all year? Both, yes. These are the bests of our favorite albums that found their way to our ears this past year. The most favorite-bests, the ones we couldn't do without even if we tried. As we did last year , and the [...]

Last year , EAR FARM featured 43 bands in our Band of the Week feature... ranging from relative unknowns (such as The Laughing and Bombadil ) to interviews with indie-rock legends (see The Wedding Present and Silver Jews ) to everything else in between. In 2009 we set out to one-up ourselves, and as it turns out we've done just that. This year EAR FARM featured 45 bands as Band of the Week, again flexing our genre chops across the entire spectrum of what we consider to be the best music being [...]

By Tyler Fassnacht The evening started out light and clean and ended pretty gritty. Now I am not insulting any of the bands that played, but it was a noticeable progression as the three bands performed. The first act was a guy named Dent May , who played ukulele and crooned cute songs. There was also another guy on stage playing tambourine and singing backup, which added a lot to the otherwise empty sound. His songs were catchy and it was fun watching him jump around with his ukulele, but I am sorry, [...]
Belated as ever, I just found this site which is inspired by the Take Away Shows series of LaBlogotheque. It is called Athens Soundies [hey hey...copyright issues? :-)] and features lo-fi videos from indie bands. It is pretty cool so check it out. I've chosen two videos for you, one from the amazing Warpaint and another from Acrylics. Enjoy!

Apart from Rihanna and Chris Brown, no musicians have been more in the headlines of late than The Fiery Furnaces . This remains the case today, but not for another misguided? jab at Thom Yorke's crew. As Pitchfork reports, Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger have unveiled their much anticipated covers album. You know, the covers album where the duo covers themselves? Yep, Take Me Round Again , the 12-track effort that hears reinterpretations of the recently released I'm Going Away or, as the [...]
Monday: Fuck Buttons, Growing, + These Are Powers @ Bowery Ballroom 7:30pm $15 [ tix ] Most acts that set up in front of a table are never able to truly capture an audiences attention in the live setting. They stand there, pressing buttons and twisting knobs, letting the music do the work for them and a lot of times it winds up as a boring performance. Fuck Buttons are not one of those bands. Yeah they do the pushing and twisting, but their music captivates, the sheer volume and magnitude of the sound [...]

MySpace If it were possible to monetize pure musical oddity, then not only would Iceland's economic problems be a thing of the past, they might well be the world's top fiscal superpower. Yes, the likes of Bjork and Sigur Ros would guarantee a GDP many times greater than the rest of the planet, but the tiny country's smaller exports would also help push things forward - case in point, Sprengjuhollin (it's pronounced the way it's spelled. Go on, try). The Reykjavík quintet don't wave their freak flag nearly [...]
