Sous les vagues, la mer est dressée, on dirait qu'elle est au ciel, Qu'elle touche et arrose les nuages qui couvrent tout. Under the waves, the sea is raising, as if it was in the sky Touching and weting the clouds which cover everything [Ovide] Tracklist : 01. Holly Miranda - Waves 02. [...]

Black Tambourine is about the furthest thing from metal you can get. But they get the nod for Black Friday today ... because I don't feel like writing about the latest Haemorrhage record. Slumberland Records has been churning out precious indie pop records for two decades now. What can I say? I've become quite smitten over the past few years. Long before The Pains of Being Pure at Hearts and the Crystal Stilts there was Black Tambourine. The D.C. four-piece formed in 1989, releasing a couple of 7-inches for Slumberland [...]

(click image to enlarge) Above we see Brooklyn quartet Cause Co-Motion having a slumber party. Cause Co-Motion! play sub-garage fuzz pop songs, rarely hitting the two minute mark. Last year Slumberland Records released It's Time: Singles and EPs 2005-2008 compiling 14 singles previously released by Cape Shok, What's Your Rupture?>, and Can't Cope. This year Cause [...]

It's always a better year for songs than albums, and here's my list of Favorite Songs of 2009. I've stopped using the word "best" as that implies some sort of higher standard. People can argue that "Lisztomania" is not the best single of 2009, but they have no grounds to say it's not my favorite. Anyway. Most of these were actual singles, and the rest could've been and when making this list I kept that in mind. Singles are ephemeral; it's ok if you don't end up listening to them a year from now. But I think a lot [...]
When it comes to the end of the year and "best of" lists, a lot of EPs and singles get looked over, sadly. This was in no way a bad year for music. The people who say that kind of stuff are lonely, depressed losers who don't have good taste anyway. They probably couldn't find good music if someone impaled them with it, but I digress. Despite all the ugly in the world this year, there was a
Greedy Hen are kind of like our Pete Best, if the Beatles were a kind of sloppy mp3 blog and Pete Best was an amazing graphic designer instead of a not very good drummer. The important thing is that we fucking love Greedy Hen. We loved them before they did us a massive solid by creating the beautiful banner you see at the top of the page and we love them even more now. We thought the best way to express that love was to ask Katherine Brickman and Kate Mitchell (aka Greedy Hen, doye) to sink even more [...]

Get ready for Dustin Payseur's indie pop. As Beach Fossils , he will be on many a playlist in 2010. Captured Tracks and Woodsist are co-releasing Beach Fossil's self-titled LP of hazy jangle sometime in March. There should also be a couple 73s coming before that. Here is a track from one of the 7's. Listen... Downloadable: Time (mp3) Upcoming Shows: Dec 31 @ Cameo Gallery w/ Surfer Blood Jan 6 @ Glasslands w/ Babies Feb 9 @ Cake [...]

1. Sea Lions - Let's Groove ( Yay! ) The Sea Lions remind me of two things: I had a cassette of Surf Classics when I was a kid that got endless play through many snowy Ohio winters on my walkman. I vaguely remember what songs were on it, but more than anything I remember the sunny-warm vibe I would get from listening to it. The second thing they remind me of is 7 Seconds, well, more like the mellow younger brothers of 7 Seconds, a band that got me through my high school years. [...]
As a precursor to our impending year-end list, we've asked some of our favorite artists to select their five favorite releases of 2009. As a past member of bands like Vivian Girls , Crystal Stilts , and Dum Dum Girls , Frankie Rose has quite the midas touch. Now she blazes ahead with her new band Frankie & The Outs, just another vivid chapter in the Frankie Rose saga. The new band plays "Beach Party" on New Years Eve at Cameo Gallery with fellow "Guest List" band Beach Fossils [...]
Last week Ryan and I (hows that for grammar Ritchie?) presented our albums as a mutual effort. This time around we put together our own lists of 30 of our favorite songs this year. Think I've ripped through an entire legal pad and a full box of bic-sticks in the process, but I was finally able to squeeze this out. Honestly, my list could have topped 100 so feel free to tell me what a jerk I am for leaving something off. 30) Dirty Projectors - Cannibal Resource [...]

Frankie Rose has been quite a force in the Brooklyn indie-rock scene over the past couple of years. She first broke out as the original drummer and founding member of Vivian Girls . Rose wrote "Where Do You Run To", arguably the best track on the band's debut album. But just as Vivian Girls started gaining momentum, the prolific drummer/songwriter decided to quit the band in favor of her new one – Crystal Stilts . Of the decision, Rose explained, "When we were writing the Vivian Girls record, a lot of the songs that I [...]

A few weeks back, San Francisco's trio of surf, harmony and riot-grrrrrrlllllllllllllnesss sssssssssssss visited my radio show at WFMU in their down time during a New York weekend jam-packed with performances along with Crystal Stilts, The Beets, and Vivian Girls, among others. Sorry you missed it, dudesm but let's call this mp3 your consolation prize: the entire set has been made available for free download . Although three out of four tracks from Grass Widow's new self-titled 123 EP on Captured Tracks are played on that live set, they only played their cover of The Urinal's "Black Hole" [...]

One of my favorite shows from SXSW 2009 was Todd P's party where Crystal Stilts played @ Ms. Bea's on E. 6th. Bands typically play in this rundown gazebo with marginal sound and swarms of clamoring fans dancing the night away. Ray Concepcion filmed this great Halloween Crystal Stilts video this year. This may sound generic, but they sound a bit Doors-ish, in a good way. Crystal Stilts-Crystal Stilts [mp3] All Hollow's Eve: Crystal [...]
So the lead singer's probably not going to erupt onto the stage from a mysterious cloud of smoke, nor will there be any crazy pyrotechnics (on purpose anyway), but that's sort of the beauty of shoegaze; your attention should be on the music. And while most associate the genre with late '80s/early '90s bands like My Bloody Valentine and the Jesus & Mary Chain, today there are plenty of bands carrying on the torch, with fuzzy, distorted guitars turned way up. And you know what? They're all connected in a little game we and our pal Kevin Bacon like to [...]
The DC founded, Slumberland Records, celebrated their twenty-year existence with a more than colossal show on Friday at the Black Cat. With a clown car of acts squeezed into the Cat's normal time slot, fanatics of the label were able cheer wildly along to the likes of Brown Recluse, Pants Yell!, Frankie Rose & The [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Slumberland Records, which celebrated its 20th anniversary Saturday night at the Bell House in Brooklyn, never suffers the pains of being predictable. Despite being known for a certain sound -- a fuzzy, jangly brand of lo-fi guitar pop -- the venerable indie imprint has released music by a surprisingly diverse bunch of bands, eight of which were on hand for the birthday bash. "It's a label we loved growing up, and that we're honored to be a part of," [...]

Pain fully busy today- on my way to Philly for one of my band's own shows. If I were to go see something tonight, it would be this. It's Slumberland Record's Anniversary party. A great little record label with some great bands. I've blogged about all these guys before, and I'm sure you're familiar with Pains very well by now. Should be a good show. Also, I really need to put up my photos from White Denim on Thursday, but I don't see that getting done until Monday after work. Yikes! Things will get back on track soon. [...]
