The DC founded, Slumberland Records, celebrated their twenty-year existence with a more than colossal show on Friday at the Black Cat. With a clown car of acts squeezed into the Cat's normal time slot, fanatics of the label were able cheer wildly along to the likes of Brown Recluse, Pants Yell!, Frankie Rose & The [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Slumberland Records, which celebrated its 20th anniversary Saturday night at the Bell House in Brooklyn, never suffers the pains of being predictable. Despite being known for a certain sound -- a fuzzy, jangly brand of lo-fi guitar pop -- the venerable indie imprint has released music by a surprisingly diverse bunch of bands, eight of which were on hand for the birthday bash. "It's a label we loved growing up, and that we're honored to be a part of," [...]

Pain fully busy today- on my way to Philly for one of my band's own shows. If I were to go see something tonight, it would be this. It's Slumberland Record's Anniversary party. A great little record label with some great bands. I've blogged about all these guys before, and I'm sure you're familiar with Pains very well by now. Should be a good show. Also, I really need to put up my photos from White Denim on Thursday, but I don't see that getting done until Monday after work. Yikes! Things will get back on track soon. [...]
Crystal Stilts started as a band the same year that Slumberland Records got back up and running after a couple of years off. It makes sense that their paths would cross since the sounds of both seem to run parallel to each other. In 2008 they made it happen with Slumberland Records releasing the excellent debut LP Alight of Night . On Saturday they too will play the Slumberland Records 20th Anniversary Party at The Bell House! ( tickets ) Here's what they think about being [...]

In celebrating the 20th anniversary of Slumberland Records we contemplated listing the label's best albums as we've already done for Matador and Merge earlier this year, but we realized that Slumberland's tradition is built more on the 7" release than it is on the full album. Since they started the label has put out more 7" singles than anything else and they've all been a magnificent mix of styles and sounds. Bands as varied as caUSE co-MOTION! , Stereolab , the [...]
On Saturday the above mentioned bands played a Todd P curated show at the Brooklyn Museum. It was part of the museum's First Saturday series. Bob Gruen was also on location with an exhibit and special discussion panel.I arrived at the museum a bit later then I wanted, thanks MTA! The Beets were almost done their set at this point. Despite seeing them many times, and even booking them, I didn't
Monday: Cass McCombs @ Bowery Ballroom 7pm $15 [ tix ] Over the course of his last two albums Cass McCombs has truly gone through some sort of metamorphosis, transitioning from dreamy bedroom pop to a cleaner, better produced, and wordier version of himself. The focus on the lo-fi sound of his past has been taken off and instead casts a blinding spotlight on his abilities as a songwriter. Thus far McCombs has been up to the task crafting deep, emotional songs that are worthy of all the attention he's received these past couple [...]
For twenty years, US label Slumberland Records has dedicated themselves to putting out the best in new dream-pop, shoegaze, independently twee and wonderful new acts. In the coming days, we've rounded [...]

There's a pretty killer event going down at the Brooklyn Museum today. First of all there's a free Todd P curated show with The Beets, Crystal Stilts, & Grass Widow at Brooklyn Museum. Bob Gruen is also going to be there speaking on a panel or something. They have tons of other shit happening for free at the museum as well. Then it's over to Third Ward for Multiverse Playground with Boy Crisis,
Todd P (king of kings in most if not all of the indie rock circles of Gotham City) makes his way towards a more legitimate rise from the DIY scene he's commanded for years now with this, a special show...

I like the word "pants." I'm not sure why; it just sounds funny ... especially when used as a verb. Follow it with the word "yell" with an exclamation point and you have an entirely different thing going on. Pants Yell! have been around for a few years now, assembling jangly pop songs from their home-base in Cambridge, Mass. It's the sort of (borderline) cutesy, melancholic indie rock you'd expect to hear on-wait for it- Slumberland Records ... which, of course, also puts out albums by artists like Black Tambourine , The Pains [...]

Frankie Rose is a former Crystal Stilt and also a former Vivian Girl . Now, she has her own band. Way back in October, the good folks over at Slumberland Records put out a green 73 by said new band. This is the A-side... Downloadable: Thee Only One (mp3) Rose's noisepop certainly recalls a revved up version of labelmates Black Tambourine . Here is a Black Tambourine mp3 for comparison purposes. Downloadable: Black Car (mp3) You can purchase the Thee Only One [...]
click here to watch WIDESCREEN POP – The Sound of Arrows By Neale Lytollis The rise of „real", some-might-say-intellectual electronic music in recent years (see Justice, Hot Chip and Digitalism) and bands moving away from traditional indie rock and venturing into more experimental territory (Telepathe, Crystal Stilts, Health being perhaps three of the main contendors), has all contributed to the word „pop" being more or less on par with „cunt" or „fuck" in terms its offensiveness. Pop is shallow and disposable; pop doesn't topple [...]
7 November, 2009 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm Who: Crystal Stilts, Grass Widow, The Beets Where: Brooklyn Museum Show Info: all ages, FREE Watch: "On Your Toes" by The Beets

Frankie Rose , drummer for Crystal Stilts and formerly of Vivian Girls, has stepped up to bat with her first solo effort, the new single "Thee Only One". "Ms. Rose's music is haunted by the ghosts of 60s girl group, Brill Building, and 80s and 90s noise pop in equal measure. It's a spooky, lovely sound -- Frankie's ethereal yet affectation-free voice swirling in a sea of church-like harmonies over a bed of tambourines, bells, and propulsive drumming. Recalling in spirit such groups as The Aislers Set and Black Tambourine, Frankie's music is both timeless and immediate, both [...]

I don't know what it is about cold, wet, Autumn days, but I get very inspired to make mixes. It's suppose to snow this Saturday. Saturday is game 3 of the NLDS at Coors Field, where the Rockies face the Phillies. Does it make me less of a fan for not wanting to endure the elements to support the team? I just assume enjoy the game from the warm confines of the bar around the corner on Blake Street where my beers don't' cost $10. Desert Song-Edward Sharpe & The [...]

MP3: Frankie Rose and the Outs - Thee Only One Here is the A-Side to the upcoming "Thee Only One" 7 inch single from Frankie Rose and the Outs , whom you might know as ex-Vivian Girls and now ex-Crystal Stilts. Pretty slick pop music, it comes out October 27th on Slumberland .
(photo by Annie Powers) Coming this autumn at The Bell House (and DC, obviously), Slumberland Records is kicking off it's twentieth (!) anniversary with a show featuring old and new talent from their roster, including reunion-like shows from The Ropers,...
