Vivian Girls, Vivian Girls (In the Red 2008) You can get off eBay now, In the Red is re-releasing the Vivian Girls lp. Been playing their 7" on Woodsist to death and caught their show at a seemingly 150-degree, 110-precent humidity Silent Barn the other night with Crystal Stilts , whose EP and 7" are out on a six-track cd now. Vivian Girls are going out on tour, then back in nyc to play Death By Audio on 8/20 and 9/2. [...]

Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band are a new Seattle quintet with a long name. We've been enjoying their self-released Weepy EP, so we thought we'd post something from it. "Dull Reason"'s a an angular, noodling summertime pop jam with hills and valleys and multi-vocal harmonies. The seasoned-sounding collection was recorded by Scott Colburn (Animal Collective, Arcade Fire), who's also recording their full length this fall. Fun fact: Their drummer, Marshall Verdoes, a 13 year-old kid, was adopted by the lead singer/guitarist Benjamin Verdoes and his wife Traci Eggleston-Verdoes, who handles various noisemakers (tambourine, toms, glockenspiel, etc.) in the [...]
Crystal Stilts - Converging in the Quiet Yet another band from Brooklyn, Crystal Stilts combine elements of Joy Division and John Maus into a dark and sultry post-punk that's rough around the edges. Currently on tour with the Vivian girls to promote their newly released EP, I discovered them the old fashioned way: asking the clerk in a record store "hey, what's this?" when he puts something on that immediately catches your attention. We've now got the deets on The Pains at Being Pure at Heart 's debut album, which will be coming out on the newly reinvigorated Slumberland Records (and on Fortuna Pop in the UK), which is also releasing The Crystal Stilts' debut this fall, and the new one from caUSE co-MOTION. Here's the tracklist: 1. Contender 2. Come Saturday 3. Young Adult Friction 4. This Love is Fucking Right 5. The Tenure Itch 6. Stay Alive 7. Everything With You 8. A Teenager in Love 9. Hey Paul 10. Gentle Sons [...]
Monday: The Death Set, The Mae Shi, + Ponytail @ Market Hotel 8pm $8 Three awesome bands playing under one roof and I'm still stuck here in Chicago. Sigh, it's cool I'm heading to the White Sox game out here today but you guys should go rock out and get sweaty watching these super energetic bands. Seriously, get out there. The Death Set - "Heard It All Before" The Mae Shi - "Run to Your Grave"
Crystal Stilts are from Brooklyn, were Brooklyn pre-Madchester Manchester. They perform tight, moody garage music from the bottom of a well. Crystal Stilts ' self titled EP is available now on Woodist Records. You can see them Jul. 26th @ New York's Knitting Factory, and Aug. 4th @ Great Scott in Boston. You should. Additionally, anybody looking for me these next few nights can find me listening to this album and drinking Delsym in a local graveyard. Crystal Stilts "Converging in the Quiet"
San Francisco's boy-boy duo, The Girls , invade NYC this weekend for the first time with their feedback-drenched pop. RCRDLBL has two songs to download but the jam is "Morning Light" and here's the video: Really good, right? The Girls play Glasslands with The Crystal Stilts on Saturday night, which in my opinion is a must-see double bill (yes I know Siren is early in the day but we can rally, people!) but here are all the NYC dates: [...]

Last time I saw a show at the Charleston it was in the back of the bar and the cranky old owner provided the lightshow by flipping the lightswitch on and off. The place has been under new management for a while now and is now booking shows in the Charleston's dank, unfinished basement making it sort of the Cake Shop of Williamsburg I guess. Crystal Stilts went on around Midnight which, after a full day of sun and beer at McCarren Pool and the aftershow at Music Hall of [...]

It would be a band from Brooklyn that would manage, with one song, to capture a sense of loss and longing, a claustrophobic, encroaching darkness with any crystalline angles muted to the point of sounding less jagged and more worn and broken. That band would be the Crystal Slits , and that song would be this song. Crystal Slits : Shattered Shine At first, I really wanted to shake these boys off, or at least turn a deaf ear [...]

Not all of Stereogum's favorite sounds conform to what folks expect us to cover. In this space, resident Bananafish fetishist Brandon Stosuy focuses on bands, albums, singles, and villages in Sweden that may otherwise pass by unnoticed. This installment's virtual milk crate contains Crystal Stilts , Factums , and Babe, Terror . A couple weeks ago I was listening to and really enjoying the Crystal Stilts' self-titled Woodsist EP. It reminded me of some of the lo-fi, somewhat fuzzy, ultimately infectious music Chemical Imbalance would've championed, Slumberland would've [...]

Ive posted about A Town In The City before but Im pretty sure that was a while ago now. For a band thats still finishing highschool, these guys sound damn good. I really hope some industry guy occasionally flicks through this blog, cos I'd love it if they got picked up early. Life For A Little Ghost is a little synth-infused, post punk number, definitely a high recommendation. Mr. K's Arcade Invertables is a track from last year and just as good, with a bit of a TV On The Radio feel to it. [...]

With a lineup that's a little bit Philly and a lot of New York, FRICTION returns to its roots in Manhattan with a cast of "local" acts this Sunday at Cake Shop. Crystal Stilts , who have recently been buzzing in NYC, bring their unique brand of of moody, catchy, and upbeat surf-inspired tunes to the Shop. Mischevious outsider-folkie PWRFL Power , Paw Track signees Rings , and Philadelphia's mysterious Tickley Feather , with her lo-fi blend of psychy bedroom pop, round out the lineup. Anicet spins between sets. Tickets are [...]

I know this wasn't the coolest show of the night (Sigur Ros) or the coolest show of Love is All's visist (Cake Shop or Market Hotel win over this) but what show! And band-for-band one of the best I've seen this year. Somehow I've managed to not see Love is All till now. I had tickets to that Knitting Factory show, like everybody else, way back when but couldn't go, or didn't go for some reason. And I liked, not loved, their album [...]

Brooklyn, NY It seemed like animal names were all the rage for a good while, but now apparently incorporating "crystal" into your band's name is the hot ticket! "Converging In The Quiet" Crystal Stilts on MySpace Crystal Stilts on The Hype Machine

Ah, Tuesdays. My Fridays. Ever since I started working at the record store five days a week, I look to Tuesday the way many regular working stiffs do Friday. For me, a weekend is Wednesday/Thursday. Next to the pay, it's probably the thing I dislike most about my job. Still, I push on; I endure it because I pretty much have to. Also, I like the fact that I get to see a lot of very weird artifacts that -- as a music obsessed individual -- I would otherwise never get to see, no matter how long I live. Like, [...]

So I guess I've just been sleeping through this whole Crystal Stilts thing, because somehow I missed out on hearing this charming little group. I did include them in last week's podcast, but I still feel like I'm late to the party. After all, they were releasing music all the way back in 2004. I finally caught up a few weeks ago when someone shared their new album with me. The Brooklyn-based 4-piece are clearly channeling some mid-80's reverb à la [...]

I got into a conversation over the weekend about which weather I would rather have to deal with: a) bitter cold or b) heat and humidity. It's a no brainer for me, I'll take the bitter bitter cold any day over this hot and humid as fuck weather we've been experiencing the last couple of days. It causes me to shut down and not want to leave the confines of air conditioned spaces. That said, I'd like to thank everyone who braved the dirty heat last night and came out for the 30th FRICTION show [...]
Remember back in the day, NME would review singles and crown some lucky band with their single of the week? I haven't picked up a copy of the NME in years so I have no idea if there is such a thing as single of th week anymore. Well, here at the finest kiss, [...]

Sadly do I wonder if I'm made for life Daddy will you love me if I say goodbye Before I forget me, arise for the fall before I forget thee [...]
