Earlier this year you thought your van and equipment were stolen in Brooklyn--can you tell us how that went down? It was towed away but there were no records of it being towed anywhere so we/they presumed it stolen. We got a letter 3 weeks later saying it was in fact towed and up for auction in 3 days. How long have you guys been together? JB and Brad have been playing for about 5 years. Kyle joined the round robin lineup about 2 years ago, myself (Andy) and Frankie both entered [...]
Monday: Friction @ Cake Shop 8pm $7 For this month's installment of Friction the super hip party has chosen Cake Shop as its location and booked a solid lineup that features two on the cusp bands. Als ob Kevin Shields und The Raveonettes zusammengespannt hätten. Die Vivian Girls aus Brooklyn sind die zarteste Versuchung dieses Sommers und zeigen auf wie "achtziger" 2008 ist. (more...)

NYC online music institution East Village Radio turns five this year, and after a day's delay due to tropical storm Hanna, a party was had yesterday at the Seaport to celebrate. The fest went from afternoon 'til night, spanning two stages (one at Pier 17, the other at the newish art gallery @Seaport around the corner), although I was on hand primarily to catch the slate of bands bookended by Slumberland revivalists Vivian Girls and Crystal Stilts (with a couple BTWs in between). Of the new blood: both Vivian Girls and [...]

Okay, if you don't like slightly droney guitars, a deliberately low-fi sound and rather distant vocals then don't go anywhere near this. If you can about hearing something hugely original I wouldn't bother either. If none of that is going to bother you, then go for it right now, because this is a really good mini-album. It comes from the same place as a lot of the darker, less jangly indie that was very popular in the late 80s, with an insistent, but low key thrum of guitar keeping the song very much on the strait and [...]
Monday: Crystal Stilts @ Santo's Party House 10pm $10 This is the last Monday before the NFL takes over your Monday nights so you might as well make it count! Buzz band, the Crystal Stilts, are playing Santo's and it's pretty cheap and I think in all likely hood there is not place that would entertain you as much as here on this particular evening. Seriously, get out before you settle in for
Who: Conor Oberst Title: Conor Oberst Label: Merge Records Thoughts: After a sub-par Bright Eyes album Conor has decided to disband and strip things down to the bare essentials. For most of his self-titled, solo debut Conor Oberst relies on just a guitar, his voice, and his thoughtful lyrics and it honestly hits a little bit better then his last couple of releases with Bright Eyes. The narratives

MP3: Vivian Girls - Where do you run to MP3: Crystal Stilts - The Sinking On Friday, August 15th, Baltimore’s Nerve Center in Remington will host the best lineup on a bill I’ve seen here (given I’ve only lived in Baltimore a year): Vivian Girls (Brooklyn), Crystal Stilts (Brooklyn), Witch Hats (Australia), Pygmy Lush (Virginia), and Mr. Moccasin. I don’t know much about the latter two bands so I’ll skip over them but that doesn’t even matter. [...]

no, this nothing to do with with crystal antlers (featured previously here ) or crystal castles (shall i feature it here?). neither has thing anything to do with devendra banhart 's cripple crow , as much as it rolls off your tongue the same way. instead, crystal stilts is a brooklyn band with as much in common with joy division and jamc as it has with 60s garage, mixing gloriously lo-fi shoegazer moods and atmospheres with glimpses of sunshine in between. in "cripple croon", you have that [...]
Word on the street is that our Friday Mixtapes are becoming quite popular. Even publicists have been voicing their love...go figure!. Anyhow, why stop a good thing? Sticking with last week's theme , we figured to incorporate some of the sounds that will be appearing at this weekend's All Points West. Consequence of Sound will be live and on site at the inaugural edition of the Jersey City festival so be sure to check here all weekend for the latest news and reviews. All Points West Fun: [...]

Anyone who ever reads this blog even a little knows I take quite a few kilobytes of bandwidth complaining about the weather. Okay? Fine. I complain about it. Especially when there's snow. But I don't make it the centrepiece of all my conversations, especially when the situation isn't going to change. See it's been raining here for like, I dunno, ten days straight, and the weather has been miserable most of the summer. Weather services are predicting nonstop rain for the next five days. So everyone, everywhere is bitching [...]
Crystal Meth, then Crystal the 80's chick, then we get Crystal Method. Now we have Crystal Castles and here comes... Crystal Stilts! New Band, Fresh Song. Upcoming Full-length LP: Alight Of Night Listen to the song Crystal Stilts by Crystal Stilts. (A good place to start, yeah?) [...]

The new Oxford Collapse album BITS is out. It looks like this: What can I say? I fucking love this track. Is it the thundering bass? Is it the jangly guitars? Is it the chorus stuck in my head? 'Dunno. I (can't?) remember when it was just an unreleased ditty made available on Daytrotter . I have seen it referred to as "Electric Art" (on Amazon ) and "Electric Air" (on Fluxblog ), but will use the track name from the [...]

Brooklyn's Crystal Stilts have prepped their debut full-length and will be unleashing it on the general public on October 28th. The album is titled Alight of Night and will be released via Slumberland Records . What's it going to sound like, you ask? Well, here's what the handy dandy little press release I received today had to say: "...There is a definite flavor of The Velvet Underground to be had, but Crystal Stilts' spectral avant-garage also takes in such far-flung references as: the spooked 60s Texas psych of 13th Floor Elevators and Red Crayola, the [...]

Crystal Stilts may be the quickest graduates from outsider status to buzz in recent memory, but to these ears at least, the shift is more than deserved. As we let you know when posting about the haunting Brooklyn band's forthcoming Slumberland full-length Alight Of Night , their minimalist and melancholic, lo-fi and Flying Nun-redolent Ian Curtis-meets- Phil Spector garage fuzz is pretty irresistible. If you're still unconvinced, though, take a closer listen via the detached surf haze of "Crystal Stilts," Alight Of Night 's organ-lined group theme song.

Alight Of Night is out on October 28th. The album will feature: 1. The Dazzled 2. Crystal Stilts 3. Graveyard Orbit 4. Prismatic Room 5. The SinKing 6. Departure 7. Shattered Shine 8. Verdant Gaze 9. Bright Night 10. Spiral Transit 11. The City In The Sea Visit Crystal Stilts on MySpace. MP3: Crystal Stilts - Crystal Stilts
Going from demo-quality production to indie-pop album-quality production serves Crystal Stilts just fine on this new version of the track that shares their name. When "Crystal Stilts" appeared on the Brooklyn band's self-titled eMusic Select / Woodsist full-length release, Pitchfork contributor Mike McGonigal neatly summed up , "They pile a rockabilly riff and nursery school melodies onto a revved-up bass line and sweet surfy 60s organ riff on top of minimalist percussion on the song." There aren't too many [...]

Vivian Girls are going out on tour, then back in nyc to play Death By Audio on 8/20 and 9/2. [...]
