Crystal Stilts Upon hearing about Crystal Stilts coming to the Rickshaw Stop, I was pleased to find out that the feature and opening acts would be local talent. And good local acts at that. You seriously can't go wrong with The Mantles and Angel Island opening for one of the more interesting reverb heavy lo-fi bands to come out of Brooklyn. It was a mini-showcase of the finest in Bay Area based jangle-pop for an audience that may not otherwise be familiar with. The [...]
Crystal Stilts - Shake The Shackles mp3from Brooklyn band's 12 April releaseIn Love With ObliviononSlumberland RecordsThat moving bass has been delighting us continuously of late, whether through headphones or in our imagination. (So, of course, has the rest of the band.) And in case you were wondering, during our most recent monthly eMusic purchasefest, we acquired the new album's "Blood Barons,

A winning personality. A balanced approach. An honest voice. Only time can write a song that's really really real. The best a man can say is the way its playing feels. [MFR SHOW ANNOUNCEMENT] Along with our friends at RadioK, we are proud to announce that we will...

The Seaholm Power Plant played host to psych, prog, indie and noise for three days, we were on hand for two of the three, picking out the best for the ATH faithful. The main stage centering the cavernous interior offered several interesting viewing angles due to the fenced off holes in the floor to the level below. Lighting throughout accentuated the scale of the interior and depth of the catacombs. Stage two was a smaller space set off to the side that remained at human body. Hit the jump for band summaries and pictures from the festival. [...]

In case you weren't aware, we participate in this Monday Mixer thing which was started by Ben over at The Metropolitan Jolt and basically each week, one of a group of us sends out a theme and everyone picks a song on that theme. This week it was my turn to pick and, not surprisingly, the theme that I went with was lo-fi. Basically, songs that sound like the way the picture above works (by the way, we got that image from futureneer ). Here's what everyone picked, starting with myself. [...]

Summer is coming and the sky is falling with all these tornadoes so as you are ducking for cover I thought it would be cool to give you a theme playlist. Here's some songs about aliens and UFO's. I know we're not alone somehow. The photo above is from the mars probe which I thought was so alien and beautiful looking. The real Men in Black know the deal. They are keeping secrets from the masses. Sunlamp Show MP3 by The Aliens from the album Luna [...]

The new Crystal Stilts album, In Love With Oblivion has been on daily repeat for me this past week and I can't get enough of this song "Sycamore Tree". That opening guitar line is infectious and reminds me of something that would be a left out track on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack. The vocals on this song are a bit too much of Jim Morrison, but that doesn't really carry through on the other songs. The music of the Crystal Stilts goes beyond just psychedelia and takes on that 502s rock sound a bit (think [...]

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars While it may be extremely easy to write about Girls Names , based on the fact that they fit right into the musical landscape as it currently stands, it's almost impossible to get their latest effort out of your head. Being released by Slumberland , Dead to Me displays a band that's sharpened their knives, ready to go to work crafting infectious pop you can bounce about to while working on pretty much [...]

Love these guys. I wasn't kidding when I wrote about wanting them to cover The Halo Benders' "Don't Touch My Bikini". Read my review over at Aquarium Drunkard .

Tweet Ok where do we start with this one then? The name of the band is intriguing in itself and quite a bold statement - Bastard Lovechild of Rock n Roll. With a name like that you want something hard and dirty and that's exactly what you get. A mix of rock and roll and an unnamed other get together to produce an offspring of psychedelic rock fused with electronic grooves, basted in the delta blues. Cookie Sugarhips (Chris Hess) and Hot Damm (Adam [...]
Brooklyn's Crystal Stilts have taken nearly three years to release a full-length follow-up to 2008's Alight of Night . However, In Love With Oblivion has been worth the wait. The release was expected to introduce listeners to a much more expansive sound for the band, and it does. Utilizing lead singer Brad Hargett's signature warbling vocals and jangly instrumentals, the album will please previous fans and entice new ones. This is simple rock and roll, but Hargett's vocals are a distinct feature for the band, distinguishing them from similar [...]

It's been nearly three years since The Days of Lore has checked in with Brooklyn's Crystal Stilts. In fact, my interview with guitarist JB Townsend waaay back on Nov. 7, 2008 was the first Q&A to appear on this here blog. Ah, memories truly are made of this. Good news: Crystal Stilts are still around, and they've avoided the sophomore slump with their latest release In Love With Oblivion (TDoL is still here as well, but has since suffered sophomore, junior and senior slumps). The new record is [...]

It has a lot in common with Ringo Deathstarr, this, right down to being almost brilliant, but just a little too much on the patchy side for me to be entirely unreserved in my praise. It's not what I had expected, either. From previous work I think I was expecting a very hipster-friendly wall of fuzzy guitars and buried vocals. These things are present, of course (I mean, the band do have 'crystal' in their name) but there are still quite a lot of elements I wasn't expecting. The vocals have an odd touch of flatness [...]
