Tim promised a surprise on the contrast podcast this week and he certainly delivered! It's part one of the third annual CD Swap extravaganza. I'm listening to it as I write this and it's pretty awesome. I love being a part of the contrast nation and the CD Swap makes me feel even closer to everyone who participates. Check it out here . The way it works is that each person is assigned someone to make a mixtape for and also [...]

Cuckoo canoe-Alaska Wolf Slay

I hope everybody that celebrates Thanksgiving had a great one! Now, here come the excuses: It was a short week... I was preoccupied with the great SF HQ relocation effort... and I'm cat-sitting. I've been a bad blogger this week. Holiday weeks are always tough to find time to scour the net for music, and this is one of those where the whole US seems to shut down. I hope to be all relocated to sunny Buckhead by the next time I post a mixtape, and also to have time during the move to pull another mix together. Anyway, I [...]

Brooklyn continues to churn out great band after great band - it seems all the great nomadic musicians wind up in the beloved borough! Perhaps it's the East Coast's answer to Seattle or America's answer to Canada, we may never know what's giving Brooklyn its Emerald City-like appeal. The origin of Brooklyn's latest rock outfit's name, Cuckoo Canoe , could prove equally as puzzling to onlookers. Either they realized how appealing alliteration can be or were making a play on Lennon's psychedelic line "I am the walrus.. Cuckoo Canoe !". If [...]

Today has been one of those days where I can find nothing to do. I've needed a break from work, but now I have no clue what to do with myself. I've been wandering around the house, watching TV, reading a book, sitting outside on this beautiful day - and still I feel bored. Any ideas on how to cure this or at least something to keep me entertained? Updating the blog (which I have been seriously lacking in doing lately) is a good enough cure for my boredom. Maybe I'll make multiple posts today. No [...]

Brooklyn, NY Cuckoo Canoe is highly recommended for fans of bands like The Strokes. Their debut album Basketball Freedom Overdrive is available now. "Coat Me Mister" Cuckoo Canoe on MySpace
So I get home to my building from the office at the end of last week and checked the post box. I have to say, there's nothing like a bubble wrapped envelope with the return address listed as Brooklyn, New York to make me smile after a rough day. By the time I made it up the elevator and doors were opening to my floor, the package was already unwrapped, CD case open with me inspecting
Or, an object lesson in listening to the whole CD. . . when first exposed to Cuckoo Canoe's music via their Myspace , I couldn't put them together into a coherent band with a sound . But now I've got my hands on Basketball Freedom Overdrive and listened to it a few times through, it's much clearer: they're a brash, energetic band leaning towards the latter-day New Wave stylings that are making the rounds again. Alaska Wolf Slay is the most clearly infectious, but that vigor pervades the CD. It's a [...]

Although this is a bit of a departure for the type of music that I generally feature on this blog, I felt like it deserved a bit of a mention on here. I only recently had a chance to listen to the album Basketball Freedom Overdrive by the NYC trio Cuckoo Canoe . Goofy name aside, their album is actually pretty impressive despite the obvious Strokes pseudo garage influence they have going. Even though they do have that sort of style to them, their music is [...]
Anyone who calls one of their songs 'You Sank My Battleship' deserves a lifetimes respect in my book. Ok, it may have been a war game made up of inexpensive plastic pieces and cheaper tactical options but boy did it enthral a country boy for one whole Christmas time (only Tank Command holds fonder memories). Thankfully Brooklyn's (is Brooklyn the New Canada or the New Sweden for New Bands?)
