Every time I wear my Cuddle Magic t-shirt, I get quite a few smirks and at least one person asks what it means. Well, what I'd like to ask them is, first, aren't they aware that cuddling is, indeed, magic? And, second, would they like a hug? Cuddle Magic may have a weird name, but it somehow makes sense. Their music inspires hugs (sophisticated ones though) and is achieved through instrumental wizardry involving a large list of unusual instruments. What happens when your source of inspiration expires and your influences can only have a posthumous effect on you? Ben Davis, one of the songwriters behind the Brooklyn chamber ensemble Cuddle Magic wondered these things after Vic Chesnutt passed in 2009. Coping with the loss of the inspirational musician, Davis thought, "I can't write a song, with Vic Chesnutt gone". But he and the rest of Cuddle Magic did, and they did it with gentle grace through their song "Disgrace Note". It's not easy to write a song about suicide, as it's a heavy topic. [...]

Earlier this year The Daredevil Christopher Wright release The Nature of Things ; I thought it was a solid effort that slowly made its way into my playing rotation, though the band received minimal press. Cuddle Magic , a 10 piece avant-pop orchestra split between Philly and Brooklyn, is about to celebrate the release of their third album "Info Nympho", which is available for streaming here . The band offers an array of soothing instruments (including glockenspiels, toy piano, and various strings and winds) along with the more standard guitar, bass, and drums. Their latest release, "Info Nymph ," is a piece of art full of stories, literature and artwork, wrapped into an (very) unusual take on traditional songwriting.
