Avant!

Cult of Youth is a post-industrial folk outfit whose grizzly vocals and complex instrumentation sets them apart from a lot of bands right now. The group consists of Sean Ragon, on lead vocals and multi-instruments, drummer Glenn Maryanski, bassist Micki Pellerano, and violinist Christiana Key. The combination of these multi-talented artists is a successful one, their overall sound showing underlying tones of western folk music, with their east-coast roots (the band originates in Brooklyn) still shining through. Because of their unique sound, Cult of Youth was recognized as a 'Band to Watch' by Stereogum in 2011. - Christine [...]
The list is the origin of culture. It's part of the history of art and literature. What does culture want? To make infinity comprehensible. It also wants to create order — not always, but often. And how, as a human being, does one face infinity? How does one attempt to grasp the incomprehensible? Through lists, through catalogs, through collections in museums and through encyclopaedias and dictionaries. There is an allure to enumerating how many women Don Giovanni slept with: It was 2,063, at least according to Mozart's librettist, Lorenzo da Ponte. We also have completely practical lists — the shopping [...]

I have been meaning to post about the Cult Of Youth LP since I think May/June but kept forgetting... Anyway, Cult Of Youth is a band from New York City that sounds like something out of an epic, medieval or fantasy adventure movie. It is by far one of the most unique sounding bands/records in recent years. It is quite difficult to describe the sound of Cult Of Youth , it sort of sounds like a combination of The Pogues and Joy Division. It has that aggressiveness raw punk energy while producing a mysteriously dark atmosphere—it is [...]
Last year, right around the time summer turned to fall, we at Stereogum published our list of the 40 best new bands of the year . The idea of a "new" band is a pretty nebulous one, since many of the kids we listed were probably planning out their musical ventures in their basements since they were 11, but these were all artists who started to make a dent in our collective consciousness last year. This year, we've got another crop of 40 new artists who deserve your attention. So here we go again. A few clarifications [...]
![[Review] Cult Of Youth: "Cult Of Youth" (7.5)](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3683190_lg.jpg)
This song from Brooklyn's Cult of Youth is so perfectly named, it's scary. From the moment its galloping drums and vibrating bass guitar begin, I picture some great movement toward new horizons, complete with stagecoaches and covered wagons, horses and dusty trails. And yet Cult of Youth was born out of lead singer and founder [...]

Iceland's hottest new export, Iceage , have mapped out additional summer tour dates in support of their forthcoming album, New Brigade . Following a previously announced run of June dates, which includes an appearance at next weekend's Northside Festival in Brooklyn, NY, the punk band will return stateside beginning July 15th in Houston, TX. The seven-week long tour will then see Iceage moving up the West coast before headlining east for dates in Minneapolis, Madison, Chicago, and Detroit. Cult Of Youth bassist Micki Pellerano directed this sexy, bloody black and white video for his Brooklyn BTW 's dark howler, "The Pole-Star." If the feel's familiar, it's maybe because he also did that spit and s&m-heavy clip for the K-Holes' " Short Zippers ." The ritualistic torture's beautifully shot: Jacqueline Castel , who we know courtesy of her clips for Zola Jesus, Blanks Dogs, and others - handled the cinematography. It's probably NSFW, but c'mon. Another bonanza month. Another round up of the very best tracks we posted in March. Another selection of new tunes to get your teeth into too. So without further ado... Download White Denim – Drug mp3 (from D) First taste of rockers new album. Bodes well. Very well. Download The Everymen – Ballad Of Sarin mp3 (from Hello, Nice Evening. It's not news that popular indie rock got a bit darker in 2010. Look no further than regular topics of conversation around here - Zola Jesus, CREEP, Cold Cave, Salem, Tamaryn, Blessure Grave, Locrian, Gatekeeper, Frank (Just Frank), Crystal Castles, Holy Other, Balam Acab, Minks, oOoOO, Silent Diane, ///▲▲▲\\\, anyone else who got labeled "witch house," and even the new look Abe Vigoda, etc. I started thinking about this again while writing the Double Take on Liars' They Were Wrong , though to be fair, it's something that doesn't really leave my mind. Things are still [...]

When things get too much in our crumbling palace of vertiginous spires (e.g. bouts of mass hysteria and witch hunting amongst the superstitious peasants down the hill, or that feeling of ennui that often afflicts the detached beholder of the rise and decline of the latest empty fad in the outskirts of the Babylonian city of youth culture), we pack our bags and head down south in a caravan pulled by black steed, luxurious tents tidily folded by nimble fingered golems. Across the sea we sail, in the company of adventurers, spies and diplomats, braving the Ottoman fleet, [...]
