Tuesday Music News

Tuesday Music News photo by Hillary Harris Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth has joined the black metal band Twilight and will help record their next album. Guitarist and vocalist Blake Judd has been a long time fan of Moore's work and has stated his excitement in several interviews. No dates have yet been announced for when the record is due out, but keep your eyes open. Bloc Party has released a second tune from upcoming album Four , called "Day Four". Where [...]

Killing Joke Singer Missing, Place on Cult/Mission Tour in Doubt

Filed under: News , Holy Hell Killing Joke Facebook Killing Joke 's lead singer Jaz Coleman has reportedly gone missing with his remaining bandmates hoping he emerges for a forthcoming tour with The Cult and The Mission UK after a bizarre Facebook post which called the tour into question. "A statement was posted on Facebook, reputedly by our singer, maligning both The Cult and The Mission and pulling us out [...]

THE BRIGHTEST, SUNSHINIEST SUMMER EVER CONTINUES: THE KILLING JOKE’S JAZ COLEMAN IS MISSING

So. The Killing Joke were scheduled to tour the UK with The Cult and The Mission in September, but it seems that vocalist Jaz Coleman has decided instead that the best possible course of action would be to scare the shit out of everybody by dropping off the face of the planet. Apparently a recent, [...]

LIVE REVIEW: Firefly Festival @ The Woodlands, Delaware — Day 1

The first two days of Firefly festival was kicked off right with Grouplove’s cover of “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and the pyrotechnics of The Killers.

That Joke isn't coming any more: Killing Joke axe tour

There's a tour in September which brings together The Mission, The Cult and Killing Joke. Or at least, there's supposed to be. The whole thing is looking a bit sick now. First, as Slicing Up Eyeballs reports , the whole thing downsized to smaller venues as organisers discovered the supply of ageing Goths isn't as large as they'd first thought. Now, it looks like Killing Joke have quit the tour, although not yet officially: [A] scathing note about the tour and, specifically, The Cult (“All their songs suck!”), purportedly written by Jaz Coleman, [...]

Firefly Music Festival 2012: The Killers, Lupe Fiasco, and Graffiti6

The inaugural Firefly Festival in Dover Delaware proved to be nothing short of amazing.  It was everything I imagined a music festival to be.  Kicking off on Friday July 20th, and continuing through Sunday night July 22nd, the festival included artists such as Cake, Modest Mouse, The Killers, Lupe Fiasco, and much more.  Campgrounds were a few minutes from the site in the woods where the music took place, providing 3-day festival-goers a place to chill out in tents, toss back beers and flip burgers on the grill.  I only caught the Saturday performance of the fest, but it was [...]

Festival Review: CoS at Firefly 2012

"O.N.E."Yeasayer@Firefly Music Festival Dover, DE 7/20/12
America’s East Coast hasn’t had the greatest luck with multi-day music festivals. Remember Vineland? All Points West? Sure, upstate New York plays hosts to plenty of jam-band and electronica festivals, and NYC has CMJ and Governors Ball-type events, but none of those are really in the same league as, say, Coachella or Bonnaroo. Companies that try to build the next “destination festival” northeast of the Virginias always seem to struggle, so for Red Frog Events to call Firefly Music Festival “the East Coast’s premiere music experience” even before its Delaware gates opened for the inaugural outing showed either [...]

Blonds :: "Time"

Blonds :: "Time" Exploding with sweeping melody and a pleasant aphorism, "Time is on our side," New York's next big band Blonds release next single, "Time." Coming off the popularity of sultry one-off, "Run," Blonds continues down the road of the one word title, this time with less bombast but no less pathos. Where "Run" erupted into big sky of a chorus, "Time" glides along under its own power, metronomic drums marking the only measure of insistence behind a song that is ostensibly about ignoring just these sorts of chronological pressures. There are elements of the [...]

Cults @ Pitchfork (6/14)

Cults @ Pitchfork (6/14) It made sense that just before Cults began to play their sunny, throwback retro-pop, the sun came out at Union Park. The Brooklyn group certainly has grown a lot since I last seen them two years ago, when they were still the mystery buzz band with just a few songs to their name and their live show is still as fun as ever. Madeline Follin's still a pleasure to watch, swaying in her low-cut dress and ruby red lip stick stage and her vocal presence seems have definitely improved, especially on the powerful soul-pop of "You Know What I Mean". Firefly Festival 2012: Top 10 Acts Ft. Reptar, The Black Keys, Cults + More

This weekend, I'm excited to be attending Firefly 2012, a brand new music festival put on by the same crazy guys who created the legendary 5k Warrior Dash. For their first-ever foray into the world of festivals, the guys have lined up not only some of the heaviest hitters in the rock world, but also some great classic bands as well as more recent indie sensations. With a generally positive indie pop/rock vibe transcending all the acts, Firefly is sure to leave many a smilin' faces come Sunday night. What am I hoping for? I'm hoping that some [...]

Firefly Music Festival Countdown Pt. III: Cults, Blind Pilot & Bombay Bicycle Club

Firefly Music Festival Countdown Pt. III: Cults, Blind Pilot & Bombay Bicycle Club Today, I'm going to either acquaint or reacquaint you with three other "smaller" bands playing at Firefly. All of them are rightfully on my list of artists to see at the festival. First up, we have Cults . It was about two years ago when we first heard "Go Outside" from the New York duo. There wasn't much information about the band to begin with and their name was extremely difficult to google. Now, if you type Cults into your favorite search engine (Google, duh...) there website is the first on the list, atop the Wikipedia page [...]

Roskilde – Day 2

Roskilde – Day 2 Going back on our promise to have an early one on Thursday the damage wasn’t so great that it couldn’t be cured by locals Rangleklods in Cosmopol, who came highly recommended by Copenhagen’s best barman (who happens to be Irish). The young Esben Andersen has build a sound that is rock in presentation (certainly live) but with two feet planted deeply in an electronic sound. Gothic and echo-drenched, he sounds not unlike a remixed Chris Martin but with the neon-reflected-in-puddles-at-n ight audio of Chromatics and Desire. He occupies the left side, singing and jogging confidently on the spot while [...]

Pitchfork Music Festival In Photos

Pitchfork Music Festival In Photos Pitchfork's history of supporting good music is undeniable, and every year their festival in Chicago reflects that. This year's Pitchfork Music Festival was as exciting as ever, bringing together a diverse group of artists like Grimes, Purity Ring, Beach House, Danny Brown, Kendrcik Lamar, A$AP Rocky, Youth Lagoon, Willis Earl Beal, and countless others. Seeing the festival live was as good as expected, but if you missed it, here's a look at what went down. Start planning next year's trip to Chicago now. [...]

Pitchfork Music Festival Review: Cults, Youth Lagoon, Nicolas Jaar, Hot Chip, July 14, Chicago

Pitchfork Music Festival Review: Cults, Youth Lagoon, Nicolas Jaar, Hot Chip, July 14, Chicago How to describe Pitchfork ? By far one of my favorite festivals in Chi-town, I’ve heard it described as ‘Lollapalooza for hipsters’ and ‘the poor man’s Lollapalooza’, but it’s more than just an off-shoot: Pitchfork has an ethos all its own. This year’s Pitchfork ethos can be summed up with the following phrases: mud pits, ribbon dancing and jammin’ in a poncho. It might have rained in Chicago on Saturday, but in Union Park Mother Nature was just giving the good Pitchfork attendees more props to use whilst dancing their feelings. The first act that I caught [...]

In case if you missed the live stream, here are some performances by Atlas Sound, Cloud Nothings, Cults, Grimes, Hot Chip, Psychic Paramount, and Wild Flag. Pitchfork Festival 2012: Grimes, Danny Brown, Sleigh Bells & More

At ginormous festivals like Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza, it's pretty tough to craft a narrative - when there's something like 200 bands playing over a weekend, it's next to impossible to really sew a singular thread through the weekend's performances. Pitchfork Music Festival is much smaller - 45 bands in three days - so, it's a lot easier to derive the daily theme. And while Saturday brought forth another occurrence of Friday's soaking, poncho-industry-fueling rainstorms, Saturday's lineup also featured a few tack-worthy talking points, with Grimes going head to head with Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Flying Lotus and Sleigh Bells catering [...]

Pitchfork Music Festival 2012 Day Two Recap

Pitchfork Music Festival Day Two is in the books. Once again, rain tried to spoil the fun early on, but by late afternoon, the sun returned and a brilliant breeze set over Union Park giving everyone a relief from the steamy heat. After the jump, read my thoughts on the acts I saw on the a wet and wild Saturday at the fest... 1:00 p.m.: The Atlas Moth Photo by Richard Giraldi [...]
