These guys are very instrument based, you can hear various instruments used throughout their songs. It's executed very well, rather than sounding like a bunch of random instruments it actually makes sense. "Michael O'Connell specializes in playing any instrument that makes a noise, and playing all of them masterfully. He uses this considerable skill to shape the artful melodies that accompany his evocative lyrics. This soft, tender music will let him play your heartstrings too." For now I will post "Inside The Cinema" as I can't find my other favorite song called "Overflow". Enjoy a different [...]

Happy Thanksgiving Canadians! I'm off to hopefully something like the spread above, but in the meantime, here's a couple links to some good music. - Culture Reject does some more songs for Southern Souls . - We All Want Someone To Shout For features the band Young The Giant . - Cause=Time intro's us to California Wives .

Wow this was a big day for Ottawa Bluesfest on July 10, 2010. Being a Saturday it was filled with great musicians and bands playing there. I am still in cloud nine seeing The Flaming Lips playing a spectacular set. The musicians and bands I saw on Day 5 were: Tusk The Love Machine Culture Reject The Mohawk Lodge Jill Zmud Basia Bulat Metric Roger Hodgson The Flaming Lips [...]

Winchester Warm had their album release show on May 28, 2010. Took place at Club Saw. I was very surprised with the turnout. There was alot of people that filled up that place, rarely has Club Saw been packed. So packed that it was hot to concentrate to what was going on. It was a wonderful show. Sorry to make this entry short. Here are the photos from the show.

Bil Zelman Having initially only announced tour dates in short, hesitant steps, Denton, Texas-based folk-pop revivalists Midlake have taken a deep breath, counted to ten, and slated an extensive North American tour in support of their new record The Courage Of Others . Though highly-anticipated, Courage is not drawing the sort of unanimous acclaim that its predecessor, 2006's The Trials Of Van Occupanther , did, with some finding its even gentler tone exquisite and others deming it narcoleptic. I [...]

Bil Zelman Having initially only announced tour dates in short, hesitant steps, Denton, Texas-based folk-pop revivalists Midlake have taken a deep breath, counted to ten, and slated an extensive North American tour in support of their new record The Courage Of Others that will include a local stop on May 21 at the Mod Club. Turns out it's going to be video week here at the BM . You got the outstanding, outstanding, video for Kae Sun's "Lion on a Leash" yesterday, and so, naturally, you're going to get something completely different today and tomorrow. I've had the chorus for Culture Reject 's "Inside the Cinema" stuck in my head for the better part of the last, say, summer or so. You see, I caught about 5 mins of CR's set back at the Zunior 5th Anniversary Party in June , possibly heard him on a Zunior Podcast, [...]

I first heard about this session months ago, and kept waiting for Daytrotter to add it to the vault. Days turned into weeks, and I assumed there had been technical difficulties or something. Then again, it's not like the talents of Culture Reject - aka Michael O'Connel l - are in high demand and I'm sure people were banging down the Daytrotter's cyber door for other sessions first. You see, for all you non-Canadian readers, Culture Reject is sort of a cult hero up here. Those who know of his music love [...]

I'd like to go to the movie theater with my boyfriend but we have a lot of work to do. So, I selected some good music about this theme to make me feel better. Listen online: Soundcloud (47:00) Download MP3: Mediafire (43,03Mb) 2MW took you to a movie - mixtape#04 Tracklist [...]

Zunior.com is celebrating its 5th anniversary this weekend. In honour of that milestone, Canada's little digital music store is throwing a big hootennany at The Tranzac on Saturday night that promises to be an amazing evening of excellent music. Set aside the fact that I work for Zunior. Hell, even overlook that I'm playing this show myself (come early...!). I don't need any ulterior motives to peddle this show, as the sheer strength of the lineup alone leaves me salivating. Check it out for yourself: [...]
Montreal band Flotilla 's second full-length album, One Hundred Words for Water , is full of musical surprises of the best kind. Flotilla is hard to pin down, genre wise. Some tracks are solidly indie art-rock, but there's a jazzy flavour underlying the whole album. Add a bit of cabaret, folk-rock elements, a dash of electronica, nonstandard time signatures, and occasional mid-song mood changes, and you've got Flotilla. Veronica Charnley's vocals are the standout element, but the inclusion of harp lines throughout—a classical harpist is one of the band's four regular members—also differentiate this band from others. Sonic [...]

The deplorable state of cinema in Limerick was driven home last week by a wonderful cinematic event that saw eight films screened across the streets (and buildings) of Limerick city. Over the years, there have been a total of twelve cinemas in the city centre; in 2009 that total is a big fat zero. What's on at the Movies? A Cinema Revival Week For Limerick City ran for six nights from May 2-7 and was part of an exhibition called Tetris, an initiative of The Sculpture and Combined Media Course at the Limerick School of Art and Design. What's [...]

Here we are folks: I've finally gotten off my festively-enlarged ass (seriously, between Mom's holiday treats and Dad's beer I gained about 8 pounds) and finished my top albums of 2008. As per usual, these are all Canadian releases, as that's where the ground is closest to my ears. Here they are roughly arranged in descending order (very roughly): The Olympic Symphonium - More in Sorrow Than in Anger (Forward Music Group) I was a huge supporter of The Olympic Symphonium 's 2007 debut, [...]

It's Christmas Eve and the festive-booze is about to start flowing. The next few days are likely to be packed, so I thought I'd better get the second part of my favourite Canadian songs of 2008 done before the holiday fun starts. If you missed part 1, here it is . Otherwise, on to the second half. Once again, these songs are arranged in a mixtape order that I found pleasing ( download the whole thing in a zip file here ): Human Highway - The Sound ( Moody Motorcycle [...]

I always hear people saying this year was a bad one in terms of music. Not including some of the fantastic US releases ( Kozalek, J. Tillman, Black Diamond Heavies, Micah P Hinson, the dual Centro-matic/South San Gabriel, Karl Blau , Neil Halstead , and the trend to showcase your Afro-centric influences all come to mind), the bounty from the Canadian scene in '08 was impressive and for me, picking my favorites was a challenging task. While some might think that is a sign of mediocrity, I think it shows the solid collection of albums available this year. [...]
I walked into the bar on Tuesday night with a guitar case and a small piece of luggage brimming with pedals. Fully expecting to sound un-rehearsed, noisy and unimpressive, this was the follow-through on a vow I'd made to start working on a more than acoustic set involving loops and whatever else I could manage. There was a band on stage laying down some good ol' rootsy rock & roll as I clumsily crashed through the doors. Not surprisingly, while the place was far from empty no one was really paying attention. This went double on this particular evening as [...]
