My folks used to wait until after my birthday (late November) before decorating for Christmas. After that, all bets were off and we'd go wild with decorations-not to mention drooling over the Sears Wish Book...ahh, pages and pages of toys. I (heart) music's annual list of the hottest bands in Canada is somewhat of a similar event for me, as this mammoth list signals that it's time to start thinking about my own year-end countdowns. Of course, instead of looking forward to toys and holiday parties, it's a time to look back over the year [...]
You know, probably the easiest way to put a band together is to pitch yourself as the central focus and then invite your musician friends along when the need arises. Not only does this help maintain a healthy harmony it also ensures a steady stream of fresh ideas. Works for Michael O'Connell anyway and when you consider the light fantastic that is 'Inside The Cinema' it would appear to have

I Culture Reject [...]
There hasn't been much mention of the 2008 Polaris Prize on WHK as of yet. In fact, I think I've only touched on it during a review of the latest Plants & Animals release, Parc Avenue . I've been planning on posting my picks for this year's award, but given that the long list of nominees has just been announced, my energy might be better spent writing about albums I thought deserved to be there that were overlooked. Let's face it, if you ask [...]

I was checking out White Whale to see what those guys were up to and learned they had a free seven-song sampler on eMusic. Thanks to Bean, I was recently initiated to the eMusic club, so I was really excited that I could just hop on over and harpoon that magnificent whale. "Inside The Cinema" [...]

I was on the White Whale Myspace listening to that Adam Franklin track , and then this track came on, and I was all like "whoa." It's from the self-titled release on White Whale from Culture Reject , and I can already tell it's destined to be on repeat here all afternoon. ::: Culture Reject - Inside The Cinema :::
Hopefully this doesn't come across as overkill with two posts in one day. I've always been a big fan of Black Cabbage , a band from Guelph from the '90s. Their time came and went but at the end of last year a group on Facebook was dedicated to hoping the band would reunite for a show and word came that they would be performing at Hillside this year. Also appearing there will be one of Black Cabbage's main members, Michael O'Connell's new project Culture Reject . The [...]

In a whirlwind of activity I didn't post the tracklist for the previous weeks show, so here's the lineup for both. Pay special attention to the tracks by Ghost Town Trio. I'll be posting an entry on them hopefully before next week rears it's ugly, impatient head, asking for another favour when it knows full well how strained our relationship is. Hour One 1. La Boittine Souriante - Yoyo 2. Maritime - Be Unhappy 3. Constantines - [...]
Culture Reject could have been the name of one of the punk rock bands i listened to in grade 9, but Toronto based Michael O'Connell, makes a slightly different genre of music. Culture Reject's music is infused with clapping, xylophones, trumpets and everything else that makes a song perfect. Many of O'Connell's musical friends helped him [...]

Who: Culture Reject from Toronto. What: I've posted before about the songwriting of Culture Reject 's Michael O'Connell, but hadn't heard any other tracks off his new self-title record until this past week. There's some lush and layered gems in there. Head to White Whale to hear more. Song: Oh Remain .

Michael O'Connell is the main man behind the Toronto based solo project Culture Reject . I say 'main man' because the man, obviously talented, has musician friends who lent a musical hand, or two, while he recorded the album's 11 tracks. More notable amongst these were Jim Guthrie (drums, vocals), Karri North (background vocals), percussionist Dave Clark and a horn section consisting of Michael Barclay, Bradley Fauteux, and Venezuelan/Canadian saxophonist, Bernardo Padron. This is one of those little underground indie records that struggle to get heard by all the right, or even the wrong people. And the song that [...]

From the brand new self-titled release by Toronto's Culture Reject , this song is a clinic in hypnotic melody. Layered and lush, it doesn't get much more serene than "Inside the Cinema." In fact, I'm urging everyone to check out the entire album, as I can't get enough of it. mr. Gnome mr. Gnome comes to us from Cleveland. Nicole Barille and Sam Meister experiment with instrumental sounds and have been described as "utilizing elements of AltRock, Metal, Post Punk, and Prog, but lands in a realm of their own making, crafting a compelling sonic-psychedelic melange of indie rock." Last July I wrote about White Whale Records and two of their amazing artists Octoberman and Mohawk Lodge which I can't stop listening to this day. I just received word of a new album they released lately – Culture Reject . For me, and I think I said this a few time before, it's all about the label. If I find a small indie label which signs artists I can relate to, then I stay loyal and open minded to all newcomers in the future. It's like following a band you [...]
This is yet another packed week of releases. I can recommend M83's new one, Saturdays=Youth, as well as You Have No Idea What You Are Getting Into , for all my electro fans out there. Also in the pile of really good releases, are albums from Culture Reject, In Flight Radio and Ours. M83 Saturdays=Youth - Full Album Stream Does It Offend You, Yeah? You Have No Idea What [...]

They often say that band communicate with to each other musically during the seamless transitions, ebbs and flows of a song. It doesn't require a spoken word and finding that natural flow is a result of each member instinctively knowing when to be inquisitive, supportive, aggressive or simply listen with an open ear. So what happens when you are a one man band and those musical conversations happen inside your own head? For Michael O'Connell , the result is something special. The quirks and transitions he adds to his songs are like a sneak peak into an [...]
Wednesday, March 26, 2008 Even though I can't claim my car being broken into as something to be joyful about, I can say that for the return of my Xbox 360. The console quit working right before SXSW, and without an outlet to annihilate digital characters I almost went mad. Jump to the contact page, jot down my gamertag and then join me online for a few destruction catch-up sessions! Actually, before you do such a thing make sure you give [...]
