WHO: Cursed Arrows , The husband-and-wife-Halifax based Jack E Stanley and Ry N Stanley, whose last LP, The Madness of Crowds , was called passionate and pulverizing by the hippest blog on the block back in April . they're back with more of the same and then some. WHAT: "One in the Blue", new song available from their new digital EP, Skin Behind the Shroud WHEN: EP was released earlier this week on November 8, 2011 [...]

by teepoo Cursed Arrows is a duo from Halifax. Their sound is a sort of dark rock of some sort. Prog-grunge? Is that a thing? They have a limited edition cassette you can pick up on Bandcamp . Check out One in the Blue . Cursed Arrows- One in the Blue

Clearly, Halifax duo Cursed Arrows are not ones to let moss grow beneath their feet, as they've managed to release two records this year with almost 2 months to spare. We've posted something on The Madness of Crowds , but nothing from Skin Behind The Shroud until now. One In The Blue sounds like a bit of a change from the duo's past work but it's great track and a good teaser for what their latest release has to offer. MP3:: Cursed Arrows - One In The Blue [...]

by teepoo Adele- I Can't Make You Love Me (Bonnie Raitt Cover) Cursed Arrows- Let it Ride (Gordon Lightfoot Cover) Surfer Blood- Hey Sandy (Polaris Cover)

We've been happily following the evolution of Canada's Cursed Arrows and the obligingly flesh-searing jams from their latest, The Madness Of Crowds . And just when we thought we'd got the Arrows pinned down, they toss us a stylistic googlie, in the form of, not just a cover tune, but a cover tune by Gordon Lightfoot. Recorded for a Canada Day tribute to everyone's favorite Canadian troubadour, Let It Ride is a radical departure from Cursed Arrows previous output, but I'll be damned if it doesn't [...]

So hear it is. The result of months of hard work from some of our favorite bands across this nation (and even a special cameo from one of our favorite American outfits). Basically, the idea was simple: Pay tribute to a Canadian legend on Canada Day. Oh, and get some free content for the blog of course. In all seriousness, Gordon Lightfoot has been making music for decades and his stories are passed from generation to generation. Unfortunately, when asked about the greatest Canadian songwriters, Gordon is often left off the list. [...]

It's Thursday and that usually means a post chock-full of videos here at the hill, but I'm on vacation for a few days. That should give me a pass on getting the Video Hits posted, but since we already missed the Video Hits last week, I knew that wouldn't do, and so I've quickly put together a fairly eclectic post with some of the most recent CDN videos that have come across the HH news desk. This group of songs is all over the map, both the geographical kind and the musical one, with [...]
While this time of year brings warmer temperatures and more hours of daylight, this week's new releases are thematically more fitting for the dead of winter - with its cold, wickedness, grit and grime, absence of leaves, grass and flowers, and long hours of darkness. For lovers of garage rock, there's much to offer this [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe
You can add another gritty, scuzzy, amp-blowing Canadian alt-rock duo to the ever-growing list of twosomes making enough noise for 10 people: Cursed Arrows . They've been around for awhile now, but just recently showed up on my radar thanks to their soon-to-be-released third album, The Madness of Crowds (out April 3 physically but available digitally now here ). The husband-and-wife-Halifax based Jack E Stanley and Ry N Stanley first met as 21 year-olds and have been making mad passionate music together for seven years now. The Madness of [...]

I have to give credit where it's due, so kudos to the Ack for coming up with the concept for these "Deeper Into Music" posts, where we ask artists to give us a little window into their creative process with a little song-by-song breakdown of their latest release. For someone like me, who has as much musical talent & ability as your average box of Saltines, I find the details around the creation of music fascinating, and based on the positive response these posts have gotten, it seems some of you agree. Today [...]

With so much of the newest indie music being deliberately subtle and subdued, there's something refreshing about turning up the amps, pounding the bejesus out of the drumkit, and unleashing the gritty guitar riffs. What is it about being in a two piece that so often results in this kind of sound on such a regular basis? Japandroids, PS I Love You, The Pack AD, and Hot Kid are just a few recent Canadian examples I can think of off the dome, but I'm sure there are tons of others. Well, if [...]

A few months back , when we introduced Cursed Arrows and shared their rawkin' Death Rattle Blues , we had no idea that our fave Canuck husband and wife team was so close to sharing their newborn with the masses. Their newest full-length, The Madness Of Crowds , is scheduled to drop on April 5th, and can be previewed via their bandcampsite . But to help git yer juices flowing, we're happy to be sharing the serrated (and vaguely Sonic Youthian) title track, which proves yet [...]

Now that word has trickled down that The White Stripes are part of rock history, the belt for best boy-girl blooze-rock duo is up for grabs, and Cursed Arrows may be a darkhorse to keep an eye on. Way heavier than "that band," this Canadian husband and wife team whips up a overdriven stew sure to stick to the bones of fans of units ranging from Black Sabbath to The Melvins to The Warlocks. Cassette single Death Rattle Blues ( get it here ) is a stoner-boner lying is wait, provided you [...]

Like the big ol' showoff he is, the Ack has already managed to post on three great local releases, and we're but a mere six days into the new year. How am I supposed to be expected to compete with that? Well I'm going to start trying with some rather new Haligonians, Cursed Arrows , a "gender-blanced" two piece that re-located to Halifax from Upper Canada last year, and they have themselves a shiny new Bandcamp site , on which you can not only get their first two albums, but also d/l their new cassette release [...]
