![[Introducing] – The Rutabega](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3833647_lg.jpg)
Tweet The songs are heavy, not instrumentally, but with the weight of the experiences and raw feelings of their writer. The arrangements seem pretty sparse, yet I'm hearing an orchestra. Joshua Wayne Hensley's voice backed by an emotion and sincerity so poignant, it translates louder and clearer than a marching band ever could crammed into my tiny bathroom. It was a complete coincidence that when I heard The Rutabega for the first time, it was eight years to the day Elliott Smith passed [...]

Alright, let's return to crackpot opinion, fact fudging, and outright lies this time after my sentimental and painfully sincere piece on Ardent Studios and John Fry a couple of weeks back. I think there is a curse on Memphis that spreads a collective blight over everything that happens here, particularly in the realm of music making. Some say the Chickasaw Indians placed a curse on Memphis when they ceded the land to the United States Government in 1818. Others trace the curse to institutionalized economic racism that saw Africans disembarking from the Middle Passage [...]
After years, this vinyl-wielding 4-piece originating from Brighton, UK - the one and only Soft Rocks - have finally committed their collective wit to a slew of original tunes. Their debut album, The Curse of Soft Rocks, is without-a-doubt a departure from the current musical climate. Opening track We Hunt Buffalo Now is a punky, [...]

As songwriters, Stew and his longtime collaborator in the Negro Problem , Heidi Rodewald, have the moves of a boxer; They lure with melody, feint with hooks and jab with couplets, sometimes mercilessly. Race, relationships, artistic authenticity — they've gone a few rounds with them all over four the course of Negro Problem albums (and four more solo outings by Stew, the L.A. native born Mark Stewart). Now doing business as Stew & the Negro Problem, the duo — once a couple and still creative partners — today announced the January release of "Making It," their first album since [...]
"In 2000, Gilliam set out to realize his long-cherished vision of a freely adapted version of Don Quixote, titled The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, starring Johnny Depp as a time traveler from the 21st Century who meets up with Quixote,. Despite the complexity of the project, Gilliam was restricted to a bare-bones budget. During the first few days of filming, things began to go horribly awry. The situation only got worse from there, and like Orson Welles before him, Gilliam was unable to bring Don Quixote to the screen. He called it the "curse of Quixote." [...]

I'm just kidding, Julianne Hough doesn't really curse like a sailor, but she did drop an "S-Bomb" live on the air. While sitting down with syndicated radio morning show " Johnjay and Rich " to discuss her new movie Footloose, Julianne dropped an S-BOMB live on the air! It happens to the best of us, Julianne! For those of you who thought Footloose would fail, I'm [...]

Written By Suave D of Liberator Magazine Comedy: "A dramatic work that is light and often humorous or satirical in tone and that usually contains a happy resolution of the thematic conflict." Tragedy: "A drama or literary work in which the main character is brought to ruin or suffers extreme sorrow, especially as a consequence of a tragic flaw, moral weakness, or inability to cope with unfavorable circumstances." It's really sad and somewhat depressing when you reach the tragic [...]
![[gtc153] Deep Space Orchestra – Get The Curse podcast 2011-09-06](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3703410_lg.jpg)
Deep Space Orchestra is in the spotlight for this week's Get The Curse podcast. The duo composed by Chris Barker and Si Murray hasn't released a ton of material, but what I've heard on Use of Weapons, Delusions of Grandeur and more recently Quintessentials has put'em on my watch list. With a sound design aesthetic that is clearly indebted to the analog textures of seventies music and an inclination for the cosmic as indicated by the name, it would be too easy to pigeonhole DSO as yet another disco-esque act. [...]
Rocks Off sat down with Ed Starcher of Reverse the Curse, to see what we could find out about the vocalist/guitarist for one of indie-rock's biggest up-and-comers in 30 seconds. Rocks Off: What... Continue reading "30 Seconds With Reverse The Curse's Ed Starcher" >
![[gtc152] Burnski – Get The Curse podcast 2011-08-29](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3683710_lg.jpg)
This week's podcast features Northern English, Berlin-based artist Burnski. Since 2005, he's made a name of himself with excellent releases on 20:20 Vision, Dessous and Morris / Audio that showcase his distinctive sound, full of respectable house grooves definitely current but with the right amount of old school influences in the jack and deep department. And that's exactly what this two-hour long set is about, a real treat for aficionados of classy house with more than a few under-rated gems in there. http://www.getthecurse.com/201 1/08/29/burnski-2020-vision-de ssous-recordings-gtc152-2/ deepgoa.blogspot.com [...]
![[gtc151] Danny Daze – Get The Curse podcast 2011-08-24](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3674641_lg.jpg)
Fan [...]
![[gtc150] Abe Duque – Get The Curse podcast 2011-08-17](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3657345_lg.jpg)
Who better than Abe Duque to celebrate 150 entries in our podcast section? With his first release in 1993 and a residency at New York's infamous Limelight during the Club Kids' heyday, there's no doubt that this trooper, 'one of the few still licensed to use the 303′, as he jokingly puts it, is one of those artists that have not only been witnesses but also players in the development of dance music in the last few decades. Instead of paraphrasing his long and fascinating bio, I'll explain how I came in contact with the artist. Like many [...]

To celebrate the release of their new album on Paper and Plastick , Reverse The Curse is giving away a free download of their debut for the label, Hither & Yon . Our review of the band's 2008 debut Paths described the band as " a middle ground between Hot Water Music and Polar Bear Club ." If that's your bag, you know what to do. Grab the download here before 3pm EST on August 18th.
Damn Spike did it again...
. . . This record gives me a pleasure most sludge doesn't: the feeling of heavy metal. I like music with a strong back. A lot of music is heavy without being strong. The rhythm sections are weak, and the riffs don't do much besides expressing down-tuning. I don't need some Pro Tooled creation - that's just compensation for weakness - but I like heavy music to have backbone, and I rarely get that from the beards-and-beer set. But Hail!Hornet has backbone. Much of Disperse the Curse sounds like Obituary as a [...]
![[gtc147] Anthea Get The Curse podcast 2011-07-25](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3634041_lg.jpg)
This week, let's go back to London. A DJ since the late 90's and a fixture of London's tech-house scene, Anthea's breakthrough came in 2009. Joined by Alex Celler in the studio, the pair released bunch of fantastic tracks during that period, in particular on Cécille as well as the now defunct but always distinguished Freak & Chic imprint. Look up Caedmon Loop and The Playmaker, two tracks you've definitely heard in the clubs at some point. To me, these productions were a breath of fresh air because they combined the heavy drum grooves and hedonistic vibes indebted to Chicago [...]
