Good stuff tomorrow night at local vegan restaurant, bar, and de facto freak flag flyin' headquarters The Swan Dive (which has a website now). Curstillistas , hailing from the Pine Tree State (that's Maine, ya'll), are a mysterious freak folk collective who amalgamate soaring, sunny rhythms with totally schizophrenic instrumentation. Freak folk, yes, but there's also a visceral accessibility and pulsating, aquatic vibe that makes you feels comfortable while it secretly slips LSD in your earl grey. These dudes are enlightened. They're on MySpazz , of course, so go see 'bout them. Recommended [...]

Recently expanding the cast from his previous recording, Matt Lajoie's Cursillistas project with newly acquired siren Dawn Marna is set to release their newest LP, Joint Chiefs , on Digitails Recordings in the coming week. Described as "the dust bowl meets peyote music" and "Barn Owl meets Brightblack Morning Light", the desperate ramblings of "Bona Dea" are incredibly vast and I would even draw comparisons to some of our recent favorites, Woodsman. At over seven minutes and with so many intricate layers, I recommend a clear night sky and some headphones. Just a note: [...]
Matt Lajoie releases yet another limited slice of shamanic folk, swirling with traces of mysticism and forest floor incantations. Les Biches was originally available as a limited run CD-r and cassette recorded in 2006 and has since been lovingly reissued as a joint venture by Time-Lag and L'animaux Tryst. On one side Lajoie's dense loops and divined melodies ache with a psychedelic burn that was evident on his earlier Digitalis release but has now blossomed into a full flame witch trial sound. The burn turns sweet on the next side, roping in the gentle strains of warm hillside [...]

There's no good way to do this. I could spend a couple hours trying to truly mix this and make it sound good, or I could post if alphabetically and go watch the Celtics beat the Lakers. Hmmm... Alex and the Horribles - "Eskimo Girl" Autodrone - "Through the Backwoods" Bell - "Echinacea" Bridges and Powerlines - "Half a Cent" Brilliant Sweaters - "Sexy Genius" Bryan Scary and the Shredding Tears

Photo: Cover art from self titled Jack Rose LP. Jack Rose, (lap steel) guitarist and master of blues and folk, is always likely to receive plenty of airplay at my place around this time of the year. His fingerpicking and slide instrumentals being the perfect accompaniment for these early summer days. On his latest album Dr Ragtime & Pals he finds himself accompanied by fellow musicians Glenn Jones, Micah Blue Smaldone (also featured on this playlist with a solo track), Mike Gangloff, Sean Bowles and Harmonica Dan. Their addition of harmonica, banjo and washboard add [...]

Today is my last day in New Jersey, again. Who knows how long it will be before I return. It took almost exactly one year -- from April 27th, 2007 to April 30th, 2008 -- to warrant a first visit. Supposedly (if you believe what I've promised my parents and friends) it will not take another year for me to find my way home. We'll just have to wait and see. I'm taking today "off" in order to relax and prepare myself for the return voyage. I awoke early this morning and drove to Denville to pick up [...]

Following up some small press recordngs and an album on Time-Lag, Portland, Maine's Matt Lajoie kicks out his first widely available release. On Wasp Stings the Last Bitter Flavor he's joined by Time-Lag head Nemo Bidstrup and Sparrow Wildchild both of whom add equal amounts of dank spectral hiss to his work. Eerie vibes twist between cave mouth alchemy and field recording ambience, creeping at the edges of darkness. While there's a true element of folk at the roots, Lajoie imbues his songs with dense textures of subtle clatter; woven into lonesome night odes that creep through the [...]
The man who wrote a music for a shoe company has decided to lob his Kelly Kapoor approved efforts in a slightly more conventional direction: a movie company. Sony Pictures is releasing 21 (as in never always double down on 11) this March and has commissioned LCD to write a track, which they entitled "Big Ideas." Other artists on the soundtrack include Rihanna, UNKLE, MGMT, Amon Tobin (contributing old songs), Mark Ronson and Kasabian (doing most likely a Motowned version of Kasabian's "Lost Souls Forever") and D Sardy & Duke Spirit's Liela Moss (doing something [...]

cursillistas treestain 2008 (française version) Me suis levé tôt.
