I can't think of one single song/performance that combines such maturity, masculinity without being macho, regality, and just downright dignified soul. Originally performed & released in 1961 by then ex-Impressions vocalist, Jerry Butler, this Mayfield-penned tune was later redone by the Impressions in 1967. Their version, with Sam Gooden taking the lead, was ALMOST as good. Before: Jerry Butler - Aware of Love (1961) After: The Impressions - Aware of Love (1967)

Today, as you may know, is the release of the iPhone 5 and yes, I'm one of those dorks that got up in the middle of the night and waited in line to get my hands on the phone early (deal with it). In honor of the new device (which I'm completely loving, by the way, iOS6 Maps aside), I've made a mix of my favorite tracks to use as ringtones, which you can download below for your own shiny new iPhones or your old, outdated iPhone 4S. What makes a great ringtone track you say? [...]
This summer, Greg Dulli and his reunited bandmates in The Afghan Whigs turned heads with their cover of Frank Ocean's "Lovecrimes." It was a great rendition, but as fans know well, the Whigs are masters of interpretation. A 90s alt-rock group with soul leanings, their catalogue is peppered with fantastic R&B and Motown re-versions, and ... Continue reading ’

Chip Chabralle has exhaustingly outdone himself on this Curtis Mayfield rework Ladies & Gentlemen. Swollen with pride like a new found father or mother, Chip Chabralle’s modest but pleasing rendition of the late & great Curtis Mayfield outperforms all previous - and those soon to follow. Magical. Recently the Demagogues were asked to contribute a featured playlist for the incredible “mood based†internet based music streaming service Stereomood. Straight outta Rome the closest analogue to the service in American minds may be Pandora, but instead of using an artist as the seedbed for playlist formation Stereomood asks us to use a word [...]
As you might have noticed if you've tried to download any live shows here in the past few days, Demonoid is down. No one really knows how long it will be down, but in the meantime I'm still trying to figure out the best way to link to those shows. Bayfiles is great in that [...]
This film was released in 1977. Based on an Off Broadway play of the same name by Miguel Piñero, a co-founder of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe . The prison drama was written after its author had served time in Sing Sing in the early 70's. The NY Times called it "tough...but effective" at the time .What initially got me interested in the film was the soundtrack by Curtis Mayfield which includes one of my favorite recordings of his, " Doo Doo Wap Is Strong In Here " Watch Mayfield's performance of it in the [...]
![Throwback Thursday – Curtis Mayfield – Pusherman [Superfly,1972]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4398660_lg.jpg)
Curtis Mayfield is no doubt one of the best musicians Chicago has ever produced. The two minute clip before the song starts is from Superfly, a film about a coke dealer who makes one last big deal and tries to start a new life out of the game. They sure pushed drugs in the 702s with pure steez.

(c) Questlove Hows about a nice little super jam to start off the day? Sound good? Well, thanks to Questlove and the Funk It blog , I've got the most super of jams for your early morning missions. Quest held centre stage at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Tennessee this past weekend, assembling a crack cast of musicians to roll through tunes by the likes of Funkadelic, The Ohio Players, Curtis Mayfield, Jimi Hendrix and Led Zepplin. Long time allies like [...]

"Shall I tell it like it is? Ain't none of your business... Yes it is!" An unforgettable story. Which is followed by another track from the same '69 soul gem, a great great song about that seven year itch. "I've got the girl I waited for, she's just a wife and nothing more..." The Impressions - The Young Mods' Forgotten Story The Impressions - Seven Years

Not only is there something quite nice about 33.22, and it falling on 07/06 (unless you are American), but this is also the 666th published post on Aye Tunes. That doesn't count quite a lot of crap ones that have been published in the past that I've pulled for one reason or another - main reason being they were crap - but as of now there's 666 bits of nonsense by me* on here. That's probably quite a poor return for four years work, but whatever. So, yes, songs. I resisted temptation to make it all metal [...]
