There were a few Thanksgiving activities around Holland, but I wasn't really interested in replicating something I usually do with my family. Instead, I had an lovely evening involving karaoke and Guinness. Niet slecht! It may not be the perfect replacement for turkey, stuffing, or canned cranberry sauce, but it shall do. For today, I'll leave you with a few shouldbe karaoke classics starting with Take Me Home Tonight by Eddie Money. I haven't heard anyone get up and do it yet, but it lends itself to loud, inebriated belting and air-saxophone. Take Me Home Tonight [...]

Tomorrow, November 27th, Thanksgiving Day, is Jimi Hendrix 's birthday. He would have been 66 years old. Perhaps more significant is that this year marks the 40th anniversary of two landmark Hendrix albums - Axis: Bold as Love and the double-LP masterpiece Electric Ladyland . So, on this Thanksgiving day, after giving thanks for the roof over your head (if you still have one) and the food on your plate, also give thanks to Jimi Hendrix for the magic he brought into all of our lives through his transcendent music, amazing vision, and [...]

Fishbone is a ska / punk band out of the same L.A. club scene that bore the Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Minutemen . I hadn't heard them until around the Truth and Soul period. Strangely, I first caught them performing the Curtis Mayfield classic "Freddie's Dead" on a kids' TV show. It was an odd scene. The manic performance of an anti-drug song in front of a bunch of pre-teens. [...]

Poverty is without question one of the greatest issues facing not just our country, but the entire world. Unfortunately, in this day and age of devisive politics, unprovoked wars, and religious violence, it is too often overlooked. It seems like governments have conceded the fight against global poverty, leaving the bulk of the trench work to NGO's, non-profits, and faith-based organizations. And that's just not good enough. While the political activism of musicians is often ridiculed, there's no denying its power in getting ordinary citizens to stir from their slumber and join the cause, whether that means donating money or [...]

Chinatown : Jake Gittes: I just want to know what you're worth. Over ten million? Noah Cross: Oh my, yes. Jake Gittes: Why are you doing it? How much better can you eat? What can you buy that you can't already afford? Noah Cross: The future, Mr. Gittes, the future. The Graduate : Mr. McGuire: I just want to say one word to you. Just one word - plastics. Benjamin Braddock: Exactly how do you mean? Mr. McGuire: There's a great future in plastics. Think about it. Will you think about it? [...]

The economy is in shambles, wars rage on in Afghanistan and Iraq, and we're knee deep in an intense presidential race. Everywhere you look, politics rears its head. In an ongoing exploration of music and politics here on JamsBio, I present to you some of my favorite politically-themed album art. Arranged chronologically, this list is by no means meant to be exhaustive, rather it's a curated look at bands who proudly wear their political inclinations on their sleeves. What are some of your favorite political album covers? Create your top 5 list HERE. [...]

If it weren't for the fact that they wrote some fine tunes themselves, the Afghan Whigs could have been a really good wedding band. Seriously. Throughout their career, the now defunct band released a ton of cover songs on b-sides and compilations, and all of them were mighty good. When I decided to do a post on the Whigs, I had planned on the usual mix of b-sides and things, but I guess I hadn't realized just how much of their rare catalog was covers. [...]

Yes, some of you purist know this was released almost 2 years ago! However digging through my old hard drive I found it again, gave it a proper listen through, and realized again its dope as hell & deserves a repost! haha... DJ Swindle produces this mashup CD of classic Nas cuts combined strictly with melodies sampled from the legendary Al Green. Another dope project by DJ Swindle is "Snooperfly" which is Snoop Dogg with Curtis Mayfield samples...you can get those tracks here . [...]

Juka Soma has a very special voice. A voice I know I'll be able to recognise among thousands of other voices. And he uses it in a way that reminds me of old heroes like John Hiatt , Van Morrison , Willy de Ville and Curtis Mayfield . He doesn't follow some kind of template, he just let the song and the feeling of the song pass through his voice. It's human and warm. Musically I find myself in the States, where the influences from the mentioned heroes is recognised in the songs [...]
Each month, I make a playlist consisting of an artist of every letter of the alphabet. This is September 2008: 1. Mood Swing [ft. Talib Kweli] - Asheru - Mood Swing-EP - Hip Hop/Rap Download It Here So this song's beat is "In A Sentimental Mood" which is one of my favorite jazz songs and it has Talib Kweli who is also pretty golden. Even if it is a little longer that I expected I'm still a fan. 2. You Don't Know Me [ft. Regina Spektor] - Ben [...]
'Sup, soul babies? Apologies for leaving so much time on your hands to contemplate why I'm such an insufferably lazy bastard. No worries, though...as soon as the temperature drops below 60 degrees, my ass will be staying indoors a lot more often and we can fall in love all over again. Word. I'm almost finished with a lengthy post that will drag you snitches back to school for a dose of higher learning, and there's a phenomenal guest mix comin' up from one of my long-term affiliates as well. Until then---easy does it, children. Do it [...]

I finally checked off "watch Electroma" from my to-do list, and I have to say that I have mixed feelings about the movie. As a Daft Punk fan, it will be difficult to succomb to biases, however a shot is worth giving. First of all, this is not your traditional movie. In terms of storytelling, there are miniscule aspects of traditional storytelling but I say that with a bit of hesitation. Two robots (daft punk, not played by them though) wish to become human and as they accomplish this feat, they are looked down upon by their other [...]

Before there was... ... there was... Like previous Beat Drop subject Isaac Hayes (and unlike all other Beat Drop subjects), Curtis Mayfield has not produced any hip hop records - at least not directly. However, he has produced, written, and performed (either with his heavenly voice or ability to play multiple instruments) many great songs that have been sampled by some of the best hip hop producers, some of whom we've highlighted in the past. [...]
Can I give a Soul Drop? I need to start doing this on the regular cause I always seem to be circling back to the funky business and throwing tracks around to people. Hip hop blog nothin... Anyway, I've been doing a lot of driving lately and the soul playlist gets a lot of love. [...]
