I'm not really feeling the new Jurassic 5 album. Maybe it's because they lost the ridiculously talented turntablist and producer Cut Chemist, but Feedback is actually kind of schlocky at times. Even so, I nearly crashed the staish yesterday when I was bumpin In the House . People, you can't keep your hands on the wheel mid-smurf. It defies the laws of physics. And traffic. Now, I rarely have this kind of instant reaction to a song, but this one is crazy hot. The bass [...]

In celebtration of my new Biz Markie alarm clock, this post is an homage to The Biz. Instead of posting up some "best of" type cuts that everyone shoudl be sick of by now ( Nobody Beats The Biz being the only exception here, caused it's a favorite), let's jump around a bit and slip in some other fun stuff. Even though Biz don't move like he used to , he's still a legend in the record collecting circles and with sneaker heads . He also seems to be a favorite among many to get [...]
Return of the Original Art Form - Major Force from 12" on Mo Wax (1997 reissued 2006). Re-return of the Original Art Form - Cut Chemist from 12" on Mo Wax (2000). Closing out the string of posts on funky cut and paste productions, today we've got a great classic and an even better rethinking of that classic. Hopefully, I've given a taste of some of the better examples of this sub-sub-sub-genre, and there are definitely many more examples with varying degrees of quality. The Major Force [...]
Lesson 4: The Radio - Cut Chemist from CD Return of the DJ, Vol. 1 on Bomb Hip Hop (1995). English Lesson - DJ Format from the English Lesson EP on Bomb Hip Hop (1999). Like I said last time, the Double Dee & Steinski cut and paste mixes were very influential. They lead to numerous other Lesson's being constructed (of varying quality) in the early 90s and beyond. Most legendarily DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist nearly simultaneously and unbeknownst to each other [...]

Los Angeles, CA Cut Chemist is Lucas MacFadden is a turntable genius. Although he’s well known for being part of Jurassic 5 , his solo debut contains a number of impressive tracks that range from samba to surf rock. The most notable is the boss-nova style of "The Garden." The Audience’s Listening is available now from Warner Bros. "The Garden" Cut Chemist [...]

House has been warmed. We lost a few poker chips in the process. They're under one of these couches. Last night it was all about Swingers. Big fuck'n fangs . Sixteen Candles is about all the action I can take today. Long Duck Dong . I love it. Just picked up the new Cut Chemist album. From J5 to Ozomatli to his collabs with DJ Shadow, everything that resonates off this dude's turntable needle is gold. This album blends smooth instrumentals and cuts [...]

Ok... so I´ve got the uploading fever... let´s just say I´m slightly bored and have come across with a couple of songs that got me dancing and shakin´ everything that was shakable! But first, a VERY quick and VERY brief review of the bands. Aksak Maboul: Belgium. Avant rock/jazz band. 2 albums 1977 and 1980. Them Sheperds: Raw synths, fat beats and grinding rythms. Dark Comedy: Beatsy, thick bassline house extravaganza. Booty-shaking friendly! [...]
“I broke that out of my canister of quips and snaps.†-- Philly Boy Roy, finally revealing the source of his neverending supply of comebacks “I admire any kind of person that can make a livin’ sitting down.†-- Philly Boy Roy on his respect for sedentary professionals “They’re not at all cosmopolitan like we’s is." -- Philly Boy Roy on the unsophisticated Ames, Iowa-based Zieglers “They made a bad record, you don't need to play it!†-- Fred, not a fan of Led Zeppelin's "Hot Dog" “Knock [...]

A fun, albeit, muggy weekend here in Chicago. And now it’s back to the daily grind and what better record to get you through the week than the new Cut Chemist album, The Audience’s Listening ? I picked this up last week and so far it’s been one big WOW! I really had no idea what to expect with this record. I had assumed that it would be a standard, present day rap album that would act as a vehicle for “booty-shaking†videos and singles but reviews were leading me to [...]

I am and have always been x-tremely inept when it comes to creating anything remotely visually appealing. And this bums me out huge. As animated as my visual vocab can seem at times, when it comes down to actually translating any sort of mental to the medium, everything must be funneled into the motor system and then fumbled out of my clumsy little hooves. Unfortunately, seeing as my fingers have been blessed with the dexterity of a cerebral palsy victim, my wayward scribbles have never progressed much farther then the linings of some notebook pages. Therefore, [...]
Funky Friday's Audience Is Listening Turtablist extraordinaire Cut Chemist dropped his debut solo LP The Audience's Listening this week. Best known as DJ (and beat maker) for Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli, as well as the Brainfreeze and Product Placement collaborations with DJ Shadow, it is a record that has been years in the making. I am loving it. It's a crate digger's blend of old school hip hop,

80,000 years in the making, Lucas MacFadden finally delivers his dense and clear labor of love, The Audience's Listening , on a major label (Warner), no less. It seems that ever since the mighty "Lesson 63 made it's debut on the first Deep Concentration compilation to the joy of DJ fans everywhere, Cut has been working on a mysterious album. The solo tracks came out in tribbles, and most of the time, all we heard from him was his blinding production for Jurassic 5 as a full time member. Seems like he had to leave the group [...]

It's a good week for new releases this week with new releases from Sufjan Stevens, some guy from Radiohead and Cut Chemist whose new album "The Audience's Listening" I have been anticipating since I heard the pre-released song - 'The Garden' a few months ago. Well I picked up a copy and it's been on constant rotation since. I was worried that the album wouldn't live up to my expectations, but there was no need. His work with Ozomatli, Jurassic 5 (which he left in May 2006), with DJ Shadow on 'Brainfreeze', 'Product Placement' and last year's DJ [...]

With Jurassic 5’s soon to be released 3rd full length album, Feedback (scheduled to hit the shelves 7/25), having to deal with the glaring hole in production with the absence of Cut Chemist it seems appropriate that their previous album, with only 350,000 in sales, was aptly titled Power In Numbers . It seemed like it never got its due or the group as well, at least in the United States. It also seemed as if the title foretold the near future as well. With the first single off of Feedback being a [...]

Sufjan Stevens - 'Year Of The Dog' 7. Cut Chemist - 'The Garden' 8. Julian Casablancas, Eddie Vedder, and Josh Homme - 'Mercy, Mercy Me' 9. [...]
Just a quick post tonight as I'm off to see my mate's band, the dIRTY dARLINGS , play some shit pit pub in Wolverhampton. So while I'm getting ready to head out and see them, I'll leave my iPod in charge of the music. You know the score, I hit the magic shuffle button and the first three songs it chooses are your soundtrack for the evening. But just before that, why not head over to Clever Titles Are So Last Summer and congratulate the [...]

Another great weekend for live music in Dublin with the Fiery Furnaces rockin Whelans and North Mississippi Allstars bringing the blues into town. With the sun shining all weekend, I wanted to post some music to facilitate the good vibes so here you go.. Cut Chemist & This Kid named Miles - SNT (Live at Peacepipe) I downloaded this track off the net maybe 8 years ago. It's from Cut Chemist (Jurassic 5) and this Kid named Miles with some nice samples and scratching over the top. [...]
