since we're still on the topic of heartbreak (are we?), i can't help but sneak in this song from the recently released album you and i from new zealand band cut off your hands . formerly known as the shaky hands, they were threatened with a lawsuit by a similarly named portland band, so it was perhaps the best fit for ex-suede guitarist bernard butler to be chosen to produce this album (suede, too, was sued by a new york cabaret singer going by that same name and were forced to release their u.s. albums as the [...]

It's a month into 2009, and clear favorites are emerging in my iTunes for the year. Granted, there is a long way to go in the year, but here are my Top 10 listened to songs of 2009 so far. Some of the songs on this list are older, sure. I'll do this toward the end of each month; it should be an interesting look at the year once December rolls around. Vetiver – Everyday [...]

Ra Ra Riot at The Wellmont Theatre (12/08/08) Photo : Jon Klemm Ra Ra Riot just announced a massive tour schedule with the likes of Death Cab for Cutie, Cold War Kids, Tokyo Police Club, Passion Pit, Cut Off Your Hands and new Barsuk signees Telekinesis . In addition to the big tour, they're also releasing a CD single (because that's what the kids are asking for these days) of " Can You Tell " on March 3, 2009 [...]
Cut Off Your Hands / You & I Frenchkiss / BUY It's been a long time coming - what with a string of EPs teasting the hell out of audeinces since 2006 - but the full-length debut from these New Zealand post-punkers has finally washed up on U.S. shores. Better late(r) than never though, as [...]

Doves Joyous news to start the day yesterday when it was announced that Doves had not only assigned a release date to their fourth album and first in over four years - Kingdom Of Rust will be available on April 7 in North America - but they were also offering the lead track from the record, "Jetstream", available as a free download on their website for a fortnight in exchange for signing up to their mailing list. Curiously, said offer seems to have disappeared for the moment but I expect that's due to [...]

Syracuse, New York's own Ra Ra Riot will be bringing their unique, string-happy indie gems to the screaming throngs of Ben Gibbard fanatics and devoted die hard death cabbies this April when they join Death Cab For Cutie on the U.S. leg of their global campaign for indie-rock supremacy...or formally; their Winter/Spring 2009 Tour. Cut Off Your Hands You & I Frenchkiss Records Release Date: 01.20.09 There's something to be said of the timing of New Zealand quartet, Cut Off Your Hands ' debut LP, You & I . If it had been released two years ago it might've been dismissed as just another in the line of post-punk revivals. Thankfully though, it's been released in 2009, and the distance from said rock movement turns out to be quite refreshing. Angular in the right spots, like in "Turn Cold" and [...]

(photo: Steve Gullick) Although initially turned off by the rather violent name, I have to say that I'm warming to New Zealand's Cut Off Your Hands . As tiresome as it may be for new emerging bands to be saddled with comparisons to older, more established acts, there's no denying that the stamp of The Smiths influence is all over their debut album, You & I . The guitar riff on first single "Turn Cold" is a dead ringer for "This Charming Man". This isn't a [...]
Enjoy 'Turn Cold' below. You & I is out now. COYH MP3 at bottom of post. MP3: Cut Off Your Hands - Happy As Can Be

I'm looking forward to picking up Ra Ra Riot 's CD single " Can You Tell " that Barsuk plans to put out March 3rd. It will feature a new song, RAC and Tom Campesinos! remixes, a Daytrotter track, a 2006 demo and a mp4 video of the band in the Attic Sessions . Catch them on the road coming up touring to Langerado and Noise Pop , also dates with Death Cab , Cold War Kids , TPC , Passion Pit , [...]

elbow.co.uk My relationship with Elbow has been circuitous to say the least. Their debut Asleep In The Back failed to engage and I didn't give them another chance until 2005's Leaders Of The Free World , a record liked well enough , but it wasn't until last year's The Seldom Seen Kid that they really finally clicked - partly thanks to them crafting a terrific album but also because of my finally being able to reconcile expectation with reality . [...]

Cut Off Your Hands hail from New Zealand, and are just now releasing their debut LP, entitled You and I , in the States last week on Frenchkiss Records. The trio play infectious power-pop-punk in the vein of The Fratellis, Franz Ferdinand, or The Wombats and are set to complete their introduction to the U.S. with some tour dates here starting in February. The group's frontman, Nick Johnston, had the following to say about the record: "Our pop sensibility has come lately. (While writing the record) I was listening to a lot [...]

Andrew Bird Noble Beast [...]

Frank Yang I couldn't offer any excuse for not discovering Bishop Allen sooner when I finally got around to reviewing their album The Broken String back in December , but maybe I could have just said "I hadn't seen Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist yet". Apparently the exposure gained from an appearance in said film has done wonders for the Brooklyn band's profile and helped explain why the El Mocambo was so healthily full on Saturday night, despite yet another snowstorm.
